    There are two basic ways to see growth:one as a product,the other as a process.People have generally viewed personal growth as an external(外在的)result or a product that can easily be identified and measured.The worker who gets a rise,the student whose grades improve,the foreigner who learns a new language—all these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.

    By contrast(对照),the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine,since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way.The process is not the road itself,but the attitudes,feelings people have,and their caution or courage,as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties.In this process,the journey never really ends;there are always new ways to experience the world,new ideas to try,new challenges to accept.

In order to grow,to travel new roads,people need to have a willingness to take risks,to face the unknown,and to accept the possibility that they may"fail"at first.How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is necessary for our ability to grow.Do we see ourselves as quick and curious?If so,we tend to take more chances and be more open to unfamiliar experiences.Do we think we're shy and indecisive?Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate,to move slowly,and we think we are slow to adapt(适应)change or that we're not smart enough to deal with a new challenge.Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all.

    These feelings of insecurity(不安全)and selfdoubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow.If we protect ourselves too much,then we stop growing.We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.

    Anything that poses a challenge or a threat to our well-being is a stress.Some stresses get you going and they are good for you – without any stress at all many say our lives would be boring and would probably feel pointless. However,when the stresses undermine both our mental and physical health they are bad.In this text we shall be focusing on stress that is bad for you.

When we are stressed the following happens:

Blood pressure rises

Breathing becomes more rapid

Heart rate (pulse) rises

Muscles become tense

We do not sleep (heightened state of alertness)

    Most of us have varying interpretations of what stress is about and what matters.Some of us focus on what happens to us,such as breaking a bone or getting a promotion,while others think more about the event itself.How you see that stressful event will be the largest single factor that impacts on your physical and mental health.Your interpretation of event and challenges in life may decide whether they are invigorating or harmful for you.

    There are three broad methods you can follow to treat stress.

Self help for treating stress

    Exercise has been proven to have a beneficial effect on a person's mental and physical state.For many people exercise is an extremely useful stress buster.

    Alcohol and drugs will not help you manage your stress better.Either stop consuming them completely,or cut down.

    If you consumption of coffee and other drinks which contain caffeine is high,cut down.

    Eat plenty of fruit and vegetable.Make sure you have a healthy and balanced diet.

    Talk to your family,friends,work colleagues and your boss.Express your thoughts and worries.

Stress management techniques

    Stress management can help you t keep away from the source of stress,change the way you view a stressful event,and lower the impact that stress might have on your body.Stress management therapy will have the objective of pursuing one or more of these approaches.

Medicines

    Doctors will not usually prescribe medications for coping with stress,unless the patient has an underlying illness,such as depression or some type of anxiety.If that is the case,the doctor is actually treating a mental illness.In such cases,an antidepressant may be prescribed.Bear in mind that there is a risk that all the medication will do is mask the stress,rather than help you deal and cope with it.

    Skating backwards on ice is a bit difficult but once you master the basis, there's nothing like it. Follow the steps given below and you will be able to skate backwards in no time.

{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    The most important step while learning how to skate backwards, is having enough confidence in yourself and in what you are doing. How can you achieve this? By practice, Just practice rolling backwards down a gentle slope every single day or just by pushing off from a wall or something of that sort.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Confident now? Great! Now the next step is to maintain your speed.While rolling in a straight line with one skate, with the other try sculling(滑浆), that is, keep pushing yourself backwards with an outwards stroke(滑动).Now bring the skate which you were using to scull, and then again, repeat the same process.Make sure that you put most of your weight on the skate which is moving straight and not the one with which you are sculling.Now, try the same thing using the other foot.Again keep doing this till you are confident enough.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Once you are confident that you can scull with either foot, the next thing that you have to do is increase your speed.Try some of your own tricks now.Scull with either foot or with both at the same time.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    While you keep one foot straight, keep sculling with the other.You can do that simultaneously with both feet.Concentrate on what you are doing but don't get so involved that you don't see where you are going.If you are not watching your back, you might just bang against something or someone.

                                                                                       World Records

    World records can be set even if you are over 100 years old. Robert Marchand was born in 1911 in northern France. He enjoys riding a bicycle, and started cycling seriously when he was in his 60s. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    On Wednesday, a crowd gathered at the Velodrome National, about 30 kilometers outside of Paris. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} The record for one hour is held by Britain's Bradley Wiggins, a former Tour de France winner. Wiggins covered 54.5 kilometers in 2015.Evelyn Stevens of the United States holds the women's record. She went almost 48 kilometers in an hour last year. In 2012, Marchand set a record for riders over 100 years old when he traveled almost 27 kilometers in an hour. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Marchand set off on his record attempt as sports lovers cheered and photographers watched. He moved slowly, but steadily, around the cycling track.

    Marchand is relatively small.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} When the hour ended, he completed 92 times around the track. That is just over 22.5 kilometers. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} He did not see his trainers telling him he only had 10 minutes remaining.“ I would have gone faster. I would have posted a better time,” he said. But the news was still good, as he did set a new record for riders 105-years-old or older.

How to make friends at a new school

    Starting with a new school can be difficult. Everything seems to be different, and you don't even know where to go for your own classes. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} However, if you use these skills, you can quickly turn some of those strangers into friends.

Be yourself.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} If some people don't accept you, they're not the kind of friends you need. People often stay together because they have similar interests. For example, someone who does a lot of sport may make friends with those who also run or swim a lot.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Remember to be nice to the people you meet at your new school. If you think that you will say something that may make them feel sad, do not say anything and just nod your head if they talk to you. Also, remember to be as helpful as possible!

Believe in yourself.

    A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don't keep your eyes on the floor. Raise your head and make eye contact with other people. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Introduce yourself. Tell them your name and where you're from.

Remember people's names.

    You like it when people use your name, and so do other people. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Besides, ask them in a kind way if they have a nickname. You'd be surprised how often this might come in handy.

A. People may become angry if you just begin by saying “Hey” each time.

B. Be friendly to others.

    For thousands of young people everywhere,college means taking their first big step into adult life. What you do in your first year of college can have a big effect on the rest of your college years. Here are some tips of mine for you.

    Plan ahead. By the end of your first week, you'll know when you should finish each of your study tasks. Put those on your list. More importantly, you need to finish them on time. Start making good use of your time at the beginning of the term.

    Eat right. College students often gain weight in their first year. Without Mom and Dad planning your meals, it's easy to lose track of just how many calories you're taking in. Try to limit fast food and keep a varied diet.

    Talk to your professors. College students tend to be afraid of their professors. Don't be afraid. They're there to help you. Visit a professor during his or her office hours just to chat with him or her. Tell them about a book you have read,or ask for advice. And, of course, ask for help, whether with a difficult point in your readings or with big life issues (问题). If nothing of these, a professor can point you in the right direction to find the resources you need.

    Speak up in class. Ask questions, answer the professor's questions, and share your opinion as much as possible. There are no points for sitting quietly anymore.

    Go to the library. There are so many resources available in the library-- magazines, videos, and of course, the books you need for your papers. Learn as much as you can about your library .Talk with the librarians about the resources available in your field.
