There were many problems when people first moved into the cities in the US and UK. Many lived in bad conditions in poor housing. The governments on {#blank#}1{#/blank#} sides of the Atlantic, worked to improve the living conditions of city dwellers (居民). For a while, especially in the U.S., city life came to be seen as the best and most exciting way to live. Living in the rural areas was regarded as boring. Who wanted to be struggling to {#blank#}2{#/blank#} a living in the country doing hard agricultural labor?

    Many in the UK believed that they had a much better chance of improving themselves in the city. It would be {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (easy) to move from the ranks of manual laborers to the middle classes {#blank#}4{#/blank#} they could get better jobs and education. However, Britain has always had a deep love of the beauty and peacefulness of the countryside. The upper classes have always liked to have a {#blank#}5{#/blank#} both in London and in the country. They still wanted to go to the country {#blank#}6{#/blank#} the summer.

    Over the last two generations in the UK and US, industrialization has slowed down and more people have become {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (dissatisfy) with life in urban areas. They are concerned about overcrowding, too much traffic and pollution. What most people want now is a life in the country. They want to move to a village, small town or small holding outside of the city {#blank#}8{#/blank#} they can have more space and some peace and quiet. Developments in transportation {#blank#}9{#/blank#} that people can continue longer distance, so more people are living as far as they can from urban centers.

People also believe that village and small town life is better for children. Many say that the schools,

{#blank#}10{#/blank#} the primary schools, are better in smaller villages. The classes are smaller and some say there will be more positive influence on their children and that their social life will be more fulfilling and nurturing.

    My feelings about science have {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (complete) changed. The science teachers {#blank#}2{#/blank#} my new school are excellent and {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (friend). The science{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (facility) are very good with laboratories that have all the {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (late) equipment. Our chemistry teacher takes us to public science lectures about four times {#blank#}6{#/blank#} term, which are always interesting, because the lecturers are famous at {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (them) area of science. In the last 20 years, seven Canadian scientists {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (win) the Nobel Prize. Now {#blank#}9{#/blank#} I'm becoming more and more interested in is physics and I want to study it at university. But my parents are {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (astonish), as they always thought I would become an English teacher.

    You are twenty-one years old and live a happy and peaceful life. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} one day, your doctor tells you that you have a serious disease and will die soon. What would you do?{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (probable) most of us might feel very sad and give up our dreams and hopes for the future. Here is {#blank#}3{#/blank#} the great scientist, Stephen Hawking, did.

    Hawking wasn't {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (discourage) because of his physical condition.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}, he went on with his study of the universe. In 2002, Hawking was invited to China. He told Chinese students about his theories and thoughts {#blank#}6{#/blank#} some of the greatest questions: what is time, how the universe began, and what are black holes. He impressed the audience with his humor, confidence and of course his {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (wise).

    Hawking became famous in the early 1970s. In 1988, he wrote A Brief History of Time, in {#blank#}8{#/blank#} he explained difficult theories in a simple way. The book {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (sell) well since it came out.

    Stephen Hawking is a man with a strong will and he is regarded as the {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (great) mind in physics since Albert Einstein.

    Once there lived a rich man, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} wanted to do something for the people of his town. But first he wanted to find out {#blank#}2{#/blank#}they deserved his help.

    In the center of the main road into the town, he placed {#blank#}3{#/blank#} very large stone. Then he {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (hide) behind a tree and waited. Soon an old man came along with his cow.

    “Who put this stone in the center of the road？” said the old man，but he did not try to remove the stone. Instead, with some difficulty he passed around the stone and continued on his way. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} man came along and did the same thing; then another came, and another. All of them complained about the stone but not tried to remove {#blank#}6{#/blank#}. Late in the afternoon a young man came along. He saw the stone，{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (say) to himself: “The night will be very dark. Some {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (neighbor) will come along later in the dark and will fall against the stone.”

    Then he began to move the stone. He pushed and pulled with all his {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (strong) to move it，only to find a bag of money under the stone. Imagine {#blank#}10{#/blank#} surprised he was!

    In the distant past, friend relied on each other for their survival. They hunted together and defended each other against {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(danger) animals and enemies. In those days, if you didn't have a friend, you would either starve, be eaten {#blank#}2{#/blank#} killed. Nowadays, friendship isn't {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(exact) a matter of life and death. However, friendship is still of great importance and not having a friend is something to be {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(concern) about. Most people look upon friends as someone they can depend on when they are going {#blank#}5{#/blank#}times of trouble. In such times, friends provide them with emotional support and sometimes financial help. It is in these troubled times {#blank#}6{#/blank#} they find out who their true friends are. As an old saying {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(go), in times of prosperity, friends will be plenty; in times of {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(suffer), not one in twenty. And there is another saying {#blank#}9{#/blank#} says you can hardly make a friend in a year, but you can easily upset one in an hour. So do your best to get along with and be grateful to all those {#blank#}10{#/blank#} are willing to side with you even when you are in the wrong as they are true friends and they are not easily come by.

    A rainforest is an area {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (cover) by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite equally through the year. Rainforests have a great effect on the world environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}the forest cover, these areas would reflect more heat into the atmosphere,{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (warm) the rest of the world. Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially causing certain natural disasters all over the world.

    In the past hundred years, humans {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (begin) destroying rainforests in search of three major resources: land for crops, wood for paper and other products, land for raising farm {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (animal). This action affects the environment as a whole. For example, a lot of carbon dioxide in the air comes from burning the rainforests. People{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (obvious) have a need for the resources we gain from cutting trees{#blank#}7{#/blank#} we will suffer much more than we will benefit.

    Rainforests are often called the world's drug store. More than 25% of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than 1% of rainforest plants have been examined for their{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (medicine) value. It is extremely likely {#blank#}9{#/blank#} our best chance to cure diseases{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (lie) somewhere in the world's shrinking rainforests.
