Last Saturday, my friend and I were walking back home after a nice evening. I {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(ask) my friend if we could walk through the town instead of taking our usual shortcut. So we did. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (sudden), a few {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(step) ahead, we saw a woman, {#blank#}4{#/blank#}was sitting on the edge of the sidewalk. She looked bad and when we asked her if she felt all right, we realized she was badly injured{#blank#}5{#/blank#} covered with blood. While my friend can back to our closest friend's place to get a thick cover, a young fellow joined {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (we) and called an ambulance. All along I sat next {#blank#}7{#/blank#} her, talking and {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (listen) to keep her awake until the ambulance arrived. She was badly {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(shock) and started to fall asleep. I knew that it was of great {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(dangerous) and she might have lost consciousness（意识）. We hope she is safe and sound now.

Food from the air

    Everyone has seen plants growing, but have you ever thought {#blank#}1{#/blank#} they get their food? In the seventeenth century, a European scientist {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (call) Van Helmot asked this question. Like most people, he thought that plants must get their food from soil. However, Van Helmot decided {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (test) the theory with experiments.

    First, he dried some soil, put it into a pot and weighed it. Next, he weighed a small tree, planted it in the pot and added rain water. Then, he watered it {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (regular) with rain water.

    After five years, he removed the tree from the pot and weighed it again. He found that the tree had gained {#blank#}5{#/blank#} huge amount of weight. When he weighed the soil, however, it was almost exactly the same as it had been five years {#blank#}6{#/blank#}. So Van Helmot drew the {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (conclude) that the tree grew by drinking water. Though it turned out to be wrong, he showed the importance of the use of scientific evidence to support ideas.

    We now know that plants and trees make their own food. Their leaves, when exposed {#blank#}8{#/blank#} the air and sun, are like factories {#blank#}9{#/blank#} can change the energy from the sun into chemical energy. During this process (过程), oxygen and sugar {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (produce). The oxygen is released back into the air, and the sugar is used by the plant as food.

On the other hand, the English language did borrow many words from French. This resulted in even more words with similar meanings, such as answer (from Old English) and reply (from Old French). It is interesting to learn {#blank#}10{#/blank#}the words for animals and meat developed.

    Since 1949 when the People's Republic of China {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(establish), and especially since 1978, China's transformation from a traditional {#blank#}2{#/blank#}（agriculture）society to a modern industrial society has been greatly accelarated by a rapid industrial restructuring. China's industrial structure developed according to the objective of industrialization, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} aimed at the proportion(比例)of agriculture declining ceaselessly, and the proportion of the industrial and service sector increasing continually. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(current), the industrial goods produced in China all range from capital goods to consumption goods.

    China's factory outputs extend from textiles (纺织业) to railway, planes and computers. China is the largest producer of inexpensive cotton textiles in the world and exports large {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(quantity) of textiles and clothes. Food processing is very important, and much farm produce is exported. Other industrial products {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(include)television sets, bicycles, cars, trucks and washing machines are expanding in the world.

    China has become {#blank#}7{#/blank#} industrialized country to some extent. The auto and the housing industry, in the process of industrialization have developed by leaps and bounds. The most important export products are machinery and electric equipment,{#blank#}8{#/blank#} the most important import products are raw materials. In recent years, China's industry{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(compete) internationally, and as a result, the {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(develop)of the country's industry is increasingly influenced by international economic environments.
