Have you ever rubbed your hands together when they get cold? Why do we do that? We do that for friction. Friction happens when two things that aren't very smooth (光滑的) rub together to make heat energy. The faster you rub two things together, the more friction you can make. Let' s discover friction!

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
★Soap                ★Water           ★Your hands
WHAT TO DO:
★Make sure your hands are dry.
★Rub your hands together until you feel the heat of your hands.
★Now, use soap and water to get your hands very slippery (滑的).
★Try to make friction happen while your hands are slippery.
★Please write down what has happened.

    Friction is an energy that happens when two things rub together. When friction happens, it makes heat! When your hands are slippery, they won't make very much friction and your hands won't get so hot.

Have you ever noticed situations where friction is happening? If not, ask your parents to take you out in a car. If it is not hot, touch the tires (轮胎) of the car before and after a short drive to see how much warmer they get from friction.

    I arrived at my mother's home for our Saturday family dinner. The smells of food flew over from the kitchen. Mother was pulling out quilt after quilt from the boxes, proudly showing me their beauties. I knew they were all made herself. She was preparing for a quilt show on TV. When we began to fold and put them back into the boxes, I noticed something at the bottom of one box. I pulled it out. “What's this?” I asked.

“Oh?” Mom said, “That's Mama's quilt.”

    I spread the quilt. It looked as if a group of school children had made the pieces together.

 “Grandmother made this?” I asked in surprise. My grandmother was a master at making quilts. This certainly didn't look like any of the quilts she had made.

  “Yes, right before she died. I brought it home with me last year and made some changes,” Mom said, “I'm still working on it. See, this is what I've done so far.”

     I looked at it more closely. She had made a line straight(直的). At the center of the quilt， she had stitched a piece of cloth with these words:    “My mother made many quilts. She didn't get all lines straight. But I think this is beautiful. I want to see it finished. Her last quilt.”

“Oh, this is so nice, Mom.” I said. I was sure now that by completing my grandmother's quilt, my mother was honoring her own mother. I realized that I held in my hands a family treasure. It started with the loving hands of one woman, and continued with the loving hands of another.

    A man and his little son spent their summer vacation walking through the mountains far from their city. One day, the little boy slipped (滑) 20-30 meters down the side of the mountain. Finally he was able to catch onto a tree branch (枝干) and hold on.

    “Help me!” he cried out.

    “Help me!” a voice shouted back.

    The boy was very surprised. “Who are you?” he shouted.

    “Who are you?” the voice shouted back.

    “You are a fool!” he said.

    “You are a fool!” the voice came back.

    At that moment, his father got to him. “Someone is talking to me but I can't see who he is,” the boy said to his father.

    “Son, that is called an echo (回音),” his father said. “But really, it's called life.”

    “You are a winner!” the father cried.

    “You are a winner!” the voice answered.

    “You are talented!” the father shouted.

    “You are talented!” it came back.

    “Son, that's how life is. Whatever you do, it always comes back to you,” the father said. “The question is: what are you sending out? Please start sending out: ‘I am strong, I am talented, and I am the best.' What you send out is going to come back to you.”

    If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart. Life will give you back everything you have given to it.

    My name is Tim. Daddy didn't know how to show love. He went to work every day and blamed(责备)me for the mistakes I had made when he came home.

    Once I broke my leg and it was Mum who held me in her arms all the way to the hospital.

    Later Dad pulled the car right up to the door of the hospital.

    They asked him to move it, saying the place was saved for the ambulances(救护车), for an emergency. Dad shouted, "What do you think this is? A tour bus?"

    At my birthday parties, Dad always seemed out of place. He just kept himself busy blowing up balloons, setting up tables, and welcoming the guests. It was Mum who carried the cake with the candles on it for me to blow out.  

    When I learned to ride a bike, I asked him not to leave me alone, but he said it was time. I fell and Mum ran to pick me up, but he stopped her. I was so mad that I showed him that I could ride it myself. He just smiled.

    When I went to college, Mum did all the writing. He just sent money and a little note about how great his garden looked now just because I wasn't playing football on it.

    Whenever I called home, he acted like he wanted to talk but always said," Wait, Tim. I'll get your mother."

    When I got married, Mum cried.

    He just blew his nose loudly and left the room.

    Daddy just didn't know how to show love, unless.

    Was it possible he showed it and I didn't recognize it?

    The class teachers thought that hobbies were important to children. So she encouraged all her students to have one, and sometimes she arranged hobby shows for their parents to see.

    One morning, the teacher told the class to have a holiday and get their hobby things to school before 5 pm. A hobby show would be held the following afternoon.

    So in the afternoon, the students with nothing to show did their lessons at school as usual, while the lucky ones had a holiday to go home for their hobby works.

    When the afternoon lessons began, the teacher was surprised to see that Tommy was not there. "I don't believe Tommy has a hobby, "she thought. However, at a quarter to five, Tommy arrived with a beautiful collection of butterflies（蝴蝶）in glass cases. The teacher liked the samples（标本）very much and put them on a desk in the classroom. But, to her surprise, Tommy picked them up again and began to leave.

    "What are you doing, Tommy?" she asked. "Those things must stay here until tomorrow afternoon. That's when the parents are coming to see them. "

    "I know that, "answered Tommy, "and I will bring them back tomorrow, but my big brother doesn't want them to be out of our house at night. ""

    But, aren't the butterflies yours?" asked the teacher.

    "No, "answered Tommy." They are my brother's."

    "But Tommy, you should show your own hobby here, not somebody else's!"

    "I know that, "answered Tommy. What surprises her most was the answer. "My hobby is watching my brother collecting butterflies."

    Bill is an American boy, but he lives with his parents in Shenzhen now. Today he is very happy, because he is going to a Chinese school for the first time. He gets up at 6: 30 a. m. After having breakfast with his parents, he takes a bus to school. He meets a boy called Wang Ming on the bus. He is happy to learn that they are in the same class. They talk a lot and become good friends.

    Bill loves his new school, because all his classmates and teachers are friendly to him.
