On a rainy day, about 150 volunteers worked for eight hours to clean up Carson Creek that is near a river. About nine tons of trash (垃圾) was taken out from there.

"We did a good job," said Alan Specter, the organizer of the event. "We've planned to come back here one more time, three years from now. Of course, we hope that there won't be so much trash next time."

The trash came in all shapes, sizes and colors: bottles, bicycles, batteries, furniture, clothing, plastic bags, dolls and even a golf bag with a full set of golf clubs (高尔夫球杆).

The dirty and tiring work was done by two volunteering groups - Save the Bay and Watch the Whales. Most of the volunteers came from a local police station and a fire station. And some of them were old people who had already got retired.

That day, it rained a little. All of them wore boots and raincoats. The work took place along a two-mile river with over 500 big yellow trash bags everywhere.

No one found anything that cost much. A five-year-old boy found an earring which he thought might be worth a million dollars. He said he'd sell it. Then he'd donate half of the money to Watch the Whales, and use the other half to buy his favourite ice cream every day.

Many people laughed at the boy's story. However, it was easily found that the environment there did become better.

根据下面短文内容,在文章后第1~10小题的空格里填入最恰当的单词,并将答案填写在答题纸标号为1~10的相应位置上。注意:每空一词。

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy. He was the oldest of five children in a worker's family. He enjoyed going to the sea when he was a young boy.

He heard that there was a lot of gold and other valuable things in East India. He wanted to find a short way to get to the Indies by ship. On August 3, 1492, he sailed toward the west from Palos, Spain with three ships. After many days, the sailors had covered a long distance on the sea and were ready to turn around for home when they saw land, an island Columbus named San Salvador. He thought he had found the Indies and called the people he saw there “Indians”. When they got to Cuba, he thought he was in Japan. The world was a lot larger than he thought.

In his life, he made four trips across the ocean. His 13-year-old son, Ferdinand, went with him during the last time. He returned to Spain in 1504. Columbus did not become rich as he had hoped. At the end of his life he only had a pension(退休金) the king and the queen had given him because he was the first to reach the New World. He died in 1506, still believing that he had found a new route to East India and that he had reached Asia.

Columbus didn't get to school very much, but he learned to read and write Spanish during his travels. He also taught himself Latin because all the geography books were written in Latin. He is remembered by all not only for the New World he discovered, but also for the way he led for other explorers.

The man could see that she was frightened, so in his friendliest voice he said, “I'm here to help you, madam. ①Why don't you wait in the car to get warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.” It took Bryan about forty minutes to repair the car. The lady felt quite thankful and she asked how much she should pay him.

If you want to pay me back, continue being kind to others. ” Under the note were nine more $100 bills.

Was the old lady an angel? The waitress was so excited that she called her husband to tell the story. “Bryan…Bryan Anderson my dear… you're not going to believe what has happened… ”

Love needs to be passed on. Everyone can be an angel.

I was ten years old when my mother died. Ten years old on that very day, my mother organized a party for me at the hospital. She made sure everyone there brought me presents.

Nurse Ms. Louise gave me a fountain pen. "Now you can write beautiful stories, Katie," She said. Then the twins in the same room gave me a pink diary. A little too cute for me. I mean, I read Stephen King, the novelist and wanted to write like him. There was one box they held out till the end. It was a large box, carefully wrapped (包裹) with exquisite paper and ribbons. "Who's it from?" I asked.

"It's you," Mama mouthed, hard breathing, but she smiled a very small smile at me. I read her lips. She meant it was a present for me.

"Of course, it is," I said happily.

I took off the paper carefully. It was a beautiful box made of heavy cardboard. Then I opened it slowly and...

"It's empty," I said. "Is this a joke?" I turned to ask Mama, but she was gone, no breath.

"Mama!" I cried. I screamed.

I cried steadily for a week at night, and for about a year, I stopped writing and reading. I felt empty and angry.

One night, I woke up remembering how she had said, "It's you." Not, "It's for you," just "It's you." Mama had been a writer herself. She didn't use words carelessly. But, why?

I took the box out and opened it. It was as empty as the day I had put it away.

"It's you," I whispered to the box. Suddenly I knew.

I was the box, solid and strong, maybe even beautiful on the outside. But I had to fill up the box to make it all it could be. I had to fill me up as well.

Then ____. The first thing I put on paper was about that birthday. I kept it in the box, and pretty soon that box was overflowing with stories. And poems. And memories.

And so was I.

I have always loved dancing. When I was younger, I watched lots of dance programs and spent hours practicing dancing in front of the mirror every week! I thought I was quite good, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} as I got older, I became less confident(自信的).

Recently I decided I'd join a dance class. The problem with most dance classes is that you need a partner(舞伴), and none of my male(男性的) friends ever wanted to come with me. I {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(prepare) to give up on the idea when I came across a magazine article about Chinese dance. And it said that a club in my town offered Chinese dance classes. It sounded great and best of all I could do it on my own! So I made a {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(decide) to take the classes.

I turned up for my first lesson feeling very anxious (焦虑的). I knew nobody there and I had never tried Chinese dance. Luckily, everyone was really friendly. We were all women. The {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(young) was about eighteen and the oldest was forty. Our teacher first asked us to do some warm- up exercises. Then she played music and we started following her moves. As soon as I listened to music, I lost {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(me)in the moves and had no time to worry about anything. After class, I got a strong feeling of {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(satisfy).

I {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(notice) a lot of changes since I took up Chinese dance as a hobby. I'm much {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(health) and I feel more confident. I've also made some great friends in the class. What {#blank#}9{#/blank#} amazing thing!

If you're interested {#blank#}10{#/blank#} dancing, you can try Chinese dance. It won't let you down.
