If you visit the animal shelter in Salinas, California, you'll see huge wood cutouts(剪下的图形) of a dog and a cat. These signs were placed in front of the building to catch people's attention. The supersized cut outs make people curious and encourage them to visit the shelter— and maybe even adopt(收养) a pet. Each year, the Salinas shelter takes in around 2,000 dogs and 2,000 cats. The animals are either strays or are dropped off by people who couldn't take care of them. Of the 4,000 animals, some of them are finally adopted into new homes. Some animals are moved to other shelters. And, unluckily, some cannot be saved because they are too sick or are considered dangerous.

Animal shelters provide food, medicine, and a safe place for animals to sleep. But they are not ideal homes. The shelters are loud, and the animals stay in small cages. The people who work at shelters do their best to care for the animals, but the animals do not always get the attention or exercise they need.

To prevent so many animals from becoming homeless, pet owners should take care of their pets. One of the best ways to care for pets is to spray or neuter them. This surgery prevents cats and dogs from having more babies. And that reduces the number of homeless animals that end up in shelters.

Reducing Our Paper Waste Every day we just use the paper and we don't think about where the paper comes from.Let us think about wasting a piece of paper is like wasting a tree. We can start with reducing the amount of paper products that we use. This could be done by such a simple way as using e-mail instead of writing notes.	Reusing We could reuse paper that is clean on one side for drafts, notes and even photocopies. As students, we could reuse paper by doing our research online or at libraries rather than buying lots of written paper. Sharing books or buying a used textbook for school is another way of reusing.	Recycle We should consider recycling notebook paper, newspapers, magazines and colored paper. We can buy paper towels, tissues, and toilet paper that have been made from recycled paper. Don't throw away the wasted newspapers or books which are not useful to you.

Scientists have developed a special way for clothing to repair rips and tears by itself, without the need for sewing. It works with materials such as cotton, linen and wool. The scientists are from the Naval Research Office and Pennsylvania State University in the USA. Scientists Dr Walter Dressick and Dr Melik Demirel looked at how a squid can cling on to things so well. The research team found a protein in the rings of teeth that cover the suckers on a squid. The protein is similar to the one found in the silk that spiders use to make spider webs. It is very strong and elastic.

The new protein has been developed as part of a coating, which is put on clothes. When the coating is dipped in water, the area around the rip or tear joins together in less than a minute. This could help clothes last longer and save money for us. It could also be useful for military and survival clothes. People like soldiers and mountaineers would be safer if they had clothes that could be repaired quickly and easily. Professor Demirel spoke about the invention. He said," The coatings are thin, less than a micron, so they wouldn't be noticed in everyday wear." Then he added, "Even thin, they increase the overall strength of the material. For the first time, we are making self-healing textiles."

The novel tells the story of a boy named Charlie Bucket and his adventures in Mr Wonka's chocolate factory. The Bucket family is very poor. Charlie loves Wonka chocolate bars. But he only receives one chocolate bar a year on his birthday.

One day, Mr Wonka decides to open up his factory to five lucky children. They can find golden tickets in their Wonka chocolate bars. On his birthday, Charlie's family all hope that his chocolate bar will contain a golden ticket. But sadly, it doesn't. Three days later, Charlie finds a coin on the ground. He buys some chocolate bars with it. To his great surprise, he finds a golden ticket!

Charlie goes to the factory with his grandfather. It is an amazing place. There is even a chocolate river! One by one, the other four children on the tour cause trouble. They are all taken away. Charlie is the only child who doesn't cause any trouble. Mr Wonka tells him that he wins the contest.
