牛津译林版九年级英语上Unit 1 Knowyourself. 单元测试(三)

根据短文内容选择正确答案。

Betty and I are best friends. Our birthdays are on the same day, so every year we have a birthday party together. But this year, we had a costume party instead.

While we were writing the invitations, my mum came in and asked, "Why not invite John?" John had been in our class for only a few months, but he was already getting better grades in Maths than anyone else in class. I wrinkled (皱起) my nose, “Mum, he wears the same pants to school every day. How could he even afford a costume?" Mum said nothing. The next day, mum gave me an envelope with a shopping certificate (凭证) in it. "I thought it would be nice for you to give this to John" Mum said. But how? We didn't want to make John embarrassed. We discussed it for a long time. Finally, Betty and I had a good idea.

On the day of our party, kids arrived, dressed differently. John arrived, in an old sheet (床单), but still in the same brown pants as usual. We danced, ate snacks and played games in groups. Before eating the birthday cake, Betty said in a loud voice, “Now it is time for the great prize game.  It is the following riddle……". It was a maths game. None of us was surprised when John came up with the right answer first and walked off with the envelope.

Everything went on well as we planned. John wore a new pair of pants and a new shirt the next week. He felt happy. So did we.

When we help others, we need to find a proper way, or we may hurt them in another way.

举一反三
A 10-year-old boy decided to learn judo though he had lost his left arm in a car accident. The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.
“ Master,” the boy finally asked, “shouldn't I be learning more moves?"“ This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you'll ever need to know,” the teacher answered.
Several months later, the teacher took the boy to his first competition. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent (对手) became impatient and charged; the boy skillfully used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the final.
This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. Soon after the match started, the boy seemed to lose. Thinking that the boy might get hurt, the judge called a time-out. He was going to stop the match when the teacher appeared. “ No,” the teacher said, “Let him continue.” A short time after the match carried on, his opponent made a careless mistake. At once, the boy used his move to pin (压住) him. The boy won the match and the competition.
On the way home, the boy asked the teacher what was really in his mind. " Why could I win the competition with only one move?" The teacher answered. "First, you've mastered one of the most difficult throws in judo. Second, your opponent can only attack your left arm to win you.”

I was in line waiting to pay. In line there were two people before me. A little boy was buying some rather strange clothes. He chatted with anyone who was interested in the clothes and soon we learnt that he was going to a kindergarten(幼儿园) party. He had done a great job of putting together interesting costumes.
I noticed that the little boy was paying mostly with change(零钱). It seemed that he had robbed his pig bank(猪形储蓄罐) to do this shopping. However, the cashier told him he was short after counting all the money. The boy thought for a moment and said, “Please keep the shirt and I will come back with more money. “
It was clear that he had already used all the money he had and he was $ 8.00 short. The lady in front of me said, “Well, I could pay half of that. “I told the boy that I could pay the other half. We dug into our handbags. However, both of us only had ten-dollar bills(纸币) and we needed the cashier to get the change for us. Other shoppers began digging into their pockets to find some change. It was amazing and touching as all these strangers seemed to react(反应) with the same mind. All wanted to be of help. Within minutes the cashier said, “I have too much money.” The cashier didn't need our ten-dollar bills. Then the lady in front of me, who had been the first to offer help, said, “Wait! I didn't even get a chance to give anything!”
I smiled at her and said, “You did your share, because it was your idea and you started all this. “ The little boy smiled and thanked us. We wished him the best and he left. I was left with a good feeling. I had seen the love and goodness of others all around me. The woman in front of me smiled and said, “It sure feels good to give, doesn't it?” I smiled back and said, “Yes !”

I will never forget the Art Festival in my high school when I won a big prize. All my teachers and classmates think I have a gift for {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(paint). However, when I was a pupil in primary school, I did not like art lessons because I could not draw very well. In fact, my drawings were much {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (bad) than most of my classmates

One day, while I {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (play) with some paints, Ms. Smith's art lesson began. I mixed the paints with water as usual. As I took the brush away, I {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (drop) the paints onto the paper. Looking at the mark, I decided {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (blow) it. The paints began to run, and I blew harder. The paints ran in all {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (direction) quickly and made a very interesting picture! I forgot that I was in class {#blank#}7{#/blank#} Ms. Smith came by my desk. With a big smile on her face, she said, "That's {#blank#}8{#/blank#} very good picture, Sandy. " After class, she encouraged {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (I) to keep trying and make more pictures. I made a lot of {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (wonder) pictures later with her help. Since then, I have been crazy about crayons and paints. I enjoy myself in the world of colors every time I paint.

Once upon a time there was a happy paper doll that had no face. His whole body was perfectly cut out and painted, except for his face. However, he had a pencil so he could choose whatever face he wanted to have. How lucky! He then spent all day asking everyone he met, "What's a perfect face like?"

" One with a big beak (鸟嘴)." answered the birds.

" No. Not one with a beak," said the trees. " The perfect face is full of leaves."

" Forget the beak and the leaves," said the flowers. " If you want a perfect face, you fill it with colors."

The doll followed their advice. However, it turned out that nobody liked it. And now he couldn't erase it! " I only wanted a face that everyone would like," he cried. "And now look, what a disaster (灾难)!"

A small cloud heard his cries and came to him, " I think I can help you. As I'm a cloud, I can make any face you like. What do you think about me changing faces until there's one that you like? I'm sure we can fix you a little bit."

The doll again felt hopeful. The cloud made all kinds of faces for him. But none of them was perfect enough.

"Never mind," said the doll. " you've been a great friend." He gave her a big hug and the cloud smiled from ear to ear, happy at having helped. Just then the doll cried excitedly, " That's it! That's the face I want! It's a perfect face!"

"Which one?" asked the cloud. "But I haven't done anything."

"Yes, yes you have! It's that face you make when I hug you!"

The cloud finally realized that he was talking about her big smile. And together they took the pencil and drew the paper doll a big smile, ten times better than beaks, colors and leaves. And that face was indeed the only one that everyone liked because it had the secret ingredient (成分) for perfect faces: a big smile that could never be erased.
