    Fraser Island is in Queensland, Australia, about 200 kilometers north of Brisbane. It is about 120 kilometers long and 240 kilometers wide. It is a very important island because it is completely made of sand. In fact, it is the largest sand island in the world. There is no airport on the island, but there is a long beach along the east coast. Planes arrive and leave from here.

    The sand makes unusual shapes. There are hills made of sand called sandblows. Nothing grows on them. They move one or two meters a year from the northwest towards the southeast of the island, getting bigger and bigger. At other places on the island, such as Rainbow Gorge, The Cathedrals and Red Canyon, the sandy rocks have different colors. Sometimes the rocks are so brown that they turn the sea brown, like coffee.

    Surprisingly, the sandy island has a lot of different plants and animals. There are dark forests—eucalyptus woods, beautiful flowers and over a hundred lakes. There are many kinds of birds, like owls and curlews. There are many animals there, too, such as crocodiles, flying foxes and wild dogs called dingoes.

    About 500,000 people visit the island every year to see the island's beauty and nature. People enjoy camping and hiking（徒步）there. Unluckily, the visitors create problems. They damage plants and frighten animals. Their sun cream（防晒霜）makes the water dirty. So it is necessary to manage the visitors. For example, people may not use motor boats or go fishing in the lakes, and they need official papers to drive there.

    According to the World Health Organization (WHO), environmental pollution kills 1.7 million children under the age of five every year worldwide. The WHO warns that child deaths will increase greatly if pollution continues to worsen. Of all the environmental problems, air pollution is being called the most dangerous.

    Most of these deaths take place in developing countries. However, WHO environment and health chief Maria Neira tells that air pollution is a leveler between rich and poor. Everybody, she says, needs to breathe.

    “You can be a very rich child, your parents very rich, but living in a place, in a city, which is very polluted. Then there is very little you can do because we all need to breathe. Air pollution is everywhere.”

    Maria Neira says one of the most important ways to reduce air pollution is to produce cleaner fuels for cooking and heating.

    “Almost half of the world population is using dirty fuels for cooking, heating, and lighting at home. And, this is affecting very much mothers who are staying and cooking at home, but the children who are around mothers—they are exposed as well.”

    Cleaning up how the world cooks, heats and lights homes and other buildings is a big-picture goal.

    But what can every one of us do to limit our family to air pollution?

    The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has the following suggestions:

    ● Avoid walking where there is a high volume of vehicle traffic.

    ● Equip homes with air filters and air conditioning units.

    ● Limit your time outside if you live in an area that issues warnings about air quality.

    ● Wear high-grade, rated face masks tightly to the face when air quality is poor.

    ● If you live or commute in a very polluted area, remove your clothes and wash immediately after entering your house.

    However, the WHO stresses that governments around the world need to take the lead on ensuring that children grow up in a clean environment.

    Are you able to send a letter with pictures and sounds to someone somewhere in the world without a stamp(邮票) on it? Using a computer you can send e-mails quickly and easily. The post is much slower than e-mail. E-mail can send its message to the other side of the world in seconds.

    E-mail is easy to use and it saves time and money. The differences in time in different parts of the world do not matter when sending e-mail. It's twenty-four-hour service(服务) that you can send e-mail at any time of the day or night. No one has to be there to get e-mail. It does not matter if your friends are in beds when you send e-mail to them, or you are seeing a movie at the movie theater when they send e-mail back.

    Do you know the movie I, Robot? It tells us a story about the future. The year is 2035 and robots are just as common as mobile phones. People depend on their robots to do lots of things, such as babysitting, cooking, doing chores and taking their dogs for a walk. Robots have to obey(顺从)humans' orders, because their designers make them do so, A police officer called Spooner hates robots. He doesn't think humans can get on well with their robots at all. But the scientist Susan has different opinions.  Susan works on robots' mind and she thinks one day robots will become more powerful (强大的) than humans and help humans to make progress (进步)

    When Spooner and Susan work together, they find that something is wrong with the worlds robots, A few robots have their own thoughts and they're trying to get out of humans: control(控制)！Of course these robots' dream doesn't come true. Humans work hard to control their robots again and they succeed at last.

    North American black bears are shy animals. They are fearful by nature, and will usually run away if they see or hear people. Because of this, it can be difficult for scientists to learn about these animals.

    In order to study black bears, researchers from New Jersey, the US, catch bears and use drugs to help them go to sleep. Researchers then work out the size and the weight of the bears, take blood, to test for diseases, remove a tooth and take it to the lab to find out its age. From these studies, researchers want to find out how many bears live in New Jersey, how long they live, and how many babies they produce.

    But in Minnesota, the US, researchers study bears that are completely awake. The bears know the researchers' voices and they are not afraid of the research team. With the help of a few grapes to keep the bears busy, researchers can touch them to check their hearts, look at their teeth, and do other jobs. Researchers can also walk or sit with bears for hours and make videos to learn about their everyday lives."

    In both places, the main purpose is the same—to make sure there is a healthy population of black bears. But the research methods and the kinds of information that researchers are able to collect are quite different.
