Long ago, in a small village of Wakefield lived two farmers, Harry and Peter. Harry was very bard working, while Peter was 1. Every day Harry got up early and came home late, but Peter walked around for fun.

    One summer there was no rain and the crops  2. Harry thought, "I must do something to save these crops, or they shall die." With this thought in mind, he went out to find a 3 so that he could dig a canal(沟渠) to his field. He walked on and on, feeling tired and thirsty. After a 4 search, he found a river full of blue water He was very happy. He started 5 a canal to his field. When it was noon, his wife sent their daughter to bring Harry home 6 lunch. But Harry did not go. He did not want to leave his work 7. He completed his work deep at night. He was very satisfied. He went home, had a good meal and 8 into sleep.

    Peter did the same. But he was not at all determined(有决心的). He also started digging a 9 to his field but he didn't have his work finished. His field did not get 10 water and all his crops died.

    Harry's field would be watered when needed. He had a good harvest because of his hard work.   

    The town of Pressure and the town of Pleasure were neighbors but they had nothing in common. Residents(居民) built walls to 1 influence from the other town.

    In Pressure, everyone wanted to be the very best. When women gave birth, they would compete（竞争、比赛） to have the baby with the loudest cry. There was violent competition in every aspect（方面） of life. Because 2 was the symbol（象征） of success. People were always busy making money, with no time for relaxation. Some young people couldn't bear the intensity(紧张) and chose to drink to escape（逃避）.

    In Pleasure, the motto（格言） was: If only you like it, do it. People grew up without pressure and could do anything they liked. Children played computer games day and night. At school, teachers didn't care 3 students came or not. Workers might sit around the office all day long drinking coffee and doing 4 .Thanks to the lack（缺乏） of regulations（规章制度）, nobody worried about losing their jobs. It was pleasure that mattered. The computers they used were old ones from the town of Pressure.

    Some of the young were addicted（上瘾） to drugs（药物）5 the emptiness（空虚） of their lives. Then, people in the two towns began asking themselves, “What is life 6 ?” But, just before life in the two towns completely7, there came a great person—Mr Reason. He went from door to door, talking with people and 8 advice. People in Pressure learnt to be satisfied with what they had 9 people in Pleasure began to make plans. They 10the walls between them and built a road to connect the two.

    I'm David. I 1 from Canada. Now I live in Beijing. I 2 up at 6:30 in the morning. Then I 3 breakfast. I like cereal with milk and sugar 4 it. I 5 some bread. My friend Li Ming likes noodles and eggs 6 breakfast. After breakfast I go to school. I have four classes7 the morning. 8 12:00, I have hamburgers and juice for lunch. Li Ming eats fish and vegetables. I have three classes in the 9. I play games after school. Then I have chicken, fish 10 rice for supper. Li Ming has dumplings.

    It's December 23rd. Class One is having a 1. They sell 2 things at school. Dave sells apples, oranges and pears. Many people 3 his fruit. He makes(赚得) ten dollars a day. Lucy sells 4. She has T-shirts on sale. 5 are her T-shirts, do you know? Oh, her T-shirts are 6 a good price. They are five dollars each. Jane sells 7 things. She has pens and 8 on sale. They are very nice. Her pens are 9 one dollar each. Her notebooks are two dollars each. Jane makes 10 dollars in the morning and five dollars in the afternoon. She makes twelve dollars a day.

    Mary, a 22-year-old young woman, stands in the kitchen of Edsa Shangri-La Hotel in Manila，preparing a cake. It would seem to be1for a cook, but Mary is not normal. She has no hands.

    Her disability(残疾), however, only slows her down while working. Using other parts of her body, Mary can cut grapes and strawberries into pieces. "When I first saw Mary, I was worried she might hurt herself when using a knife, but that has never been a2,"says the boss of the hotel. "She does not get special treatment and works just as hard as the rest of the cooks."

    Mary has come a long way since the day in September 2002 when she and her uncle were attacked by two men, who were trying to force her family off their land. The 11-year-old girl passed out(晕倒) as she tried to3herself from the attack. After she came to her sense, she found her uncle dead and saw her arms broken. Later, the doctors did an operation. They saved her life but could not save her hands.

    In 2006, with the help of the family, Mary went to live at House with No Steps, a Manila rehabilitation(康复) and training centre for disabled people. She learned how to write and do housework there. And more4, she became used to her disability. She believed she could live a normal life although she was disabled. She thought she had something important to do in life because she was5alive after the terrible attack. After she finished high school, she took a two-year Hotel and Restaurant Management course because she had enjoyed cooking since she was a little girl.

    Mary didn't shy away from the attention when she was reported on television. "I wanted others living with disabilities to believe it's6to live a normal life," Mary says. "It is difficult to make a living, but I don't lose hope. I believe nothing is impossible if you dream and work hard."
