John Hydes, who served as a firefighter for 15 years in New Zealand before moving to Australia, is not only new to the neighbourhood, he's also new to the country. But that didn't stop him becoming a local hero recently when he pulled two kids from a burning house.

"What he did was fantastic. It was a very brave act. Our family can thank him for our lives. "The moment the kids' mother saw what Mr. Hydes did for her family, tears started welling up in her eyes and falling down her cheeks.

However, Mr. Hydes, who settled here six months ago, said he wasn't thinking when he saved his neighbour's son, 5, and daughter, 7, from their PointCook home minutes before the roof fell.

It was said that the children's mother and the grandfather was occupied in housework outside the gate when the house caught fire. As they saw the thick smoke, they were scared out, unable to say a word. In spite of the phone call, the fire engine could not arrive quickly. The two children were in the bedroom. Desperate and hopeless, the kids' mother knelt down, crying at the top of her voice. Because of excessive shock, the old grandfather was in the hospital for a long time.

"When there are kids in danger you haven't got time to think, you've got to act," the father of three said. "I hadn't met my new neighbours before coming to their help. It's just a different way of meeting them, "he laughed. Actually, it was nothing new for Mr. Hydes to jump into a burning building. This time, however, he did it without protective clothing. Later on he recalled the thrilling scene of his fighting the fire.

I always wondered how people would react if I tried to approach a total stranger for help in a busy place like a street corner or in a bustling mall. I personally have always hurried past a stranger who tried to catch my attention in a busy place or when I am rushing around.

Yesterday I had a taste of being stuck in such a desperate situation where my only hope of help would have to come from a total stranger.

I was in a busy shopping mall buying a large piece of luggage. After the purchase in one of the large, fancy, expensive shops, I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot and my phone was dead.

I then requested the shop assistant who had just sold me the luggage, which was not cheap at all, if she could ring the number of my driver for me. She replied, still all smiles, "I'm sorry Sir, but it is the shop policy that we cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop."

As I was wondering what kind of policy that was, I saw a nice-looking teenage boy coming toward me. Remembering my wife's interesting theory that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when you're in trouble, I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word, he walked past me. It turned out he simply didn't see me.

I waited a bit longer in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me. Disappointed and tired, I got out of the shop on to the busy street in front. I stood there with people rushing by, looking at their faces to see if there was a sign of kindness on their face. I began wondering how many times I had reacted to strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.

I have been in the teaching profession for more than thirty years, and one of the best teachers I have ever known is Mr. Rowe. I was lucky enough to teach fourth grade together with him.

Mr. Rowe had endless patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him. He could perform miracles, like the one he performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I had ever seen. Steven couldn't stand school. He didn't like being picked last for kickball. He didn't like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly, he didn't like himself.

The first day he walked into Mr. Rowe's classroom, he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbooks onto the floor.

Mr. Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven's shoulder, but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr. Rowe welcomed him: "Hi, Steven. I'm happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year." Steven looked around the room as if Mr. Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom.

So, while Mr. Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.

That day after classes, Mr. Rowe chose Steven to pitch (投球) the kickball at recess. "Hey, Steven," Mr. Rowe commented, "You are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick." Mr. Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him!

After the kickball, Steven sat as close to Mr. Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked, Steven lit up; when he knew the answer, he raised his hand; when he answered the question, his voice shook. However, he got the answer right! He said, with Mr. Rowe, his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful.

That is not to say that every day went smoothly, but it was obvious that Steven grew to love Mr. Rowe more and more with each passing day.

Once there was an emperor(皇帝)in the Far East who was growing old and knew it was coming time to choose his successor (继承者). Instead of choosing one of his own children, he decided to do something different.

He called all the young people together one day. He said, "It's time for me to step down and to choose the next emperor. I've decided to choose one of you. "The kids were shocked! But the emperor continued, "I'm going to give each of you a special seed(种子). I want you to go home, plant the seed, water and come back here one year from today with what you've grown from this one seed. I will then judge the plants you bring, and the one I choose will be the next emperor!"

One boy named Ling was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. Back home, he planted the seed in a pot and watered it carefully. Every day he would watch to see if it had grown.

After three weeks, some of the other youths began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow. Ling kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew. Three weeks, four weeks went by. Still nothing. He felt like a failure.

Six months went by, everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Ling didn't say anything to his friends. However, he just kept waiting for his seed to grow.

A year finally went by and all the youths brought their plants to the emperor for inspection. Ling didn't want to go, but his mother encouraged him to go and to be honest about what happened. Ling knew his mother was right. He took his empty pot to the palace.

When Ling arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by all the other youths. He put his empty pot on the floor and many of the other kids laughed at him. A few felt sorry for him and just said, "Hey, nice try."

A farmer grew some vegetables in his garden. One day his wife was ill and he had no money. He had to sell some cabbages and carrots in the market. He bought some medicine and hurried to his village.

On his way home he saw a person lying on the snow. He placed his baskets on the ground and was going to help the person to get up. At that time he found it was a dead man and there was much blood on his body. He was so afraid that he ran away quickly, without taking the baskets with him.

The next afternoon the farmer was sent to the police station. Having shown the baskets, an officer asked, "Are these yours?" "Yes, sir," the farmer answered timidly. "Have you killed the man?" "No, no, sir," the farmer said in a hurry. "When did you see the dead man?" "About seven last evening." "Did you see who killed the man?" "No, sir." The officer brought out a knife and asked, "Have you seen it before?" "No, sir." The officer became angry and told the policeman to beat him up and sent him into prison.
