One day, a farmer was walking along a road with his son Thomas. The father said, “Look! There's a horseshoe, pick it up and put it in your bag.” Thomas said, “It isn't worth the trouble.” His father said nothing but he picked it up himself. When they got to a nearby town, they had a rest. There the farmer sold the horseshoe and with the few pennies he bought some cherries(樱桃).
The father and the son continued their way. The sun was well up in the sky, and there wasn't a house or even a tree where they could have a rest. Thomas felt too thirsty to walk on. At this time, his father dropped a cherry on the ground and Thomas picked it up quickly and ate it. After a while, his father dropped another cherry and once again, his son lost no time in picking it up and putting it in his mouth.
And so they went on. The old farmer dropped the cherries and the son picked them up. When Thomas had eaten up all the cherries, his father said to him, “My dear son, if you had bent(弯腰) down early to pick up that horseshoe, it would not have been necessary for you to bend so many times for the cherries. When I moved to America in the 7th grade, I did not speak any English. I had no choice but to keep working hard. Although I made1 when I reached the 9th grade, people still found it difficult to understand me because of my accent (口音).

One day, at a party, I was invited to play a guessing game. When it was my turn, I tried to 2 the object that I had in mind. Suddenly someone said with a laugh, "What did she say?" I felt 3 . Out of kindness, a girl gently advised me to repeat it, but I got stuck on the word "purple"—I couldn't 4 it. This time, everyone laughed while I was trying hard to get the word out of me. This5 had its own influence on me. When opportunities were opened up for the summer program I had been looking forward to, I6 to attend (参加) the interview. Luckily, I got tons of encouragement from people around me. So I decided to 7 .

At the interview, the other students in my group spoke very 8 but I didn't speak that much. I knew that I could hardly be understood because of my accent. Besides when I was nervous, it would be even more 9 for me to pronounce words clearly. After the interview, I stayed, said "10 " and explained to the teachers. I didn't want them to think I wasn't interested or I was being unfriendly. But they appreciated (欣赏) that I expressed11 . "It's OK. You don't have to say sorry. Your accent does not make you less than others," said one of the teachers.

Surprisingly, I was accepted into the 12 . Imagine how I felt!

Up to now, I still feel 13 that I took that step. It is a sign that I have changed. I did not let my accent 14 me. I'm sure I will continue to feel nervous about speaking English with strangers. 15 that's OK. It will not stop me from trying to be better.

 阅读下列材料, 从每题所给的A、B、C三个选项中, 选出最佳选项。

On Oct 11, robot history was made when Ai- Da, a human- like robot artist talked at a meeting in the UK. The topic for the meeting was"A Creative Future".

Ai- Da paints using cameras in her eyes and robotic arms. She" thinks" and answers questions using AI algorithms (算法). She has painted the UK queen and had her work presented in galleries(画廊).

Describing herself, Ai- Da told people at the meeting that"I am a robot and I depend on computer programs and algorithms" and" although not alive,I can still create art". Amusingly, at the meeting, Ai- Da" slept"— it shut down and had to be restarted. But her ability to answer questions in real time shows the huge developments of AI. These are developments that will continue.

One person who seems interested in this is Elon Musk. He is planning on creating his own AI robots for his company, Tesla. Musk presented Tesla's human- like robot, named Optimus, at Tesla's AI Day on Sept 30. Tesla showed videos of their robot doing simple tasks like carrying boxes and watering plants, said CNN.

With robots becoming more and more part of our daily lives, we may have to learn to live with them. But will people be happy to have these robotic friends or will they feel threatened(威胁的) by them? As Ai- Da said," Technology can be both a threat and an opportunity."
