Jim went to school to study history, but when he finished his first year, he didn't pass the exam and the teacher said to him, “You have to leave school.”

When the boy's father heard this news, he was much worried. He came to the school to see the teacher. He found the teacher in the office and asked the teacher to let Jim go on with his studies the next year.

“He is a good boy. He always does well in history,” said Jim's father, “and if you let him pass the exam this time, he will do better next year and pass the exam.”

 “No, no, that's impossible!” answered the teacher, “Last month I asked him when Napoleon（拿破仑）died and he didn't know.”

“Please sir, give him another chance.” said Jim's father, “You know we don't have any newspapers in our house, so nobody in our family knew that Mr. Napoleon was ill.”

    Thirty years ago I worked in a company. My job was to sell the cars. I was young and strong and I had been to most parts of the world and I spent one fifth of my time in the trains or planes. I liked such a life and sometimes I called myself "traveler".

    But one day I got into trouble. It was a cold morning. It blew heavily and the ground was covered with thick snow outside. I was still in bed though it was nine. I finished a long journey the day before and decided to have a good rest. Suddenly the telephone rang and my manager told me to fly to New York to take part in an important meeting. I had to get up and after a quick breakfast I hurried to the airport. The taxi went slowly and I missed the first flight. I had to take the next one. It meant I would wait for nearly five hours in the waiting-room. But five hours later a passenger said the information showed there was a bomb(炸弹) in our plane and the policemen were looking for it. And another five hours passed and most passengers lost their patience before we were allowed to get on the plane. At the entrance each passenger and their baggage(行李) had to be examined. A young man who seemed a soldier shouted at the policemen at the entrance, "If I had a gun in my baggage, I would shoot you two hours ago!"

    Mrs. Smith is a teacher. Her house is not far from her school and she walks to school every day. All the students like her. Mrs. Smith walks to school on a very cold and windy morning. The cold wind cuts her face, and big tears go down her face. She arrives at the school and goes into the classroom. It is nice and warm there and Mrs. Smith is happy. But then a small boy looks at her and puts his arms round her and says, "Don't cry, Mrs. Smith. We all love you."

In a peaceful mountain village, a father named Edward and his beloved son Bob lived in a small farmhouse.

Edward was a hard-working 1 who worked on his land every day. Bob was a lively and innocent (纯真的) boy, and he always followed his father around. The son could often learn something 2 about life from his father.

In China, the Spring Festival is a big event. I spent it in a special way last year. So I had{#blank#}1{#/blank#} very nice winter holiday last year.

On the Spring Festival, I went to Mount Tai with my parents for the {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(one) time. Mount Tai isn't very high,{#blank#}4{#/blank#} it's very beautiful. We could still see many different kinds of green trees there. Of course, a lot of trees had few {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(leaf). We climbed up the mountain. When we {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(arrive) at the top of it, we saw some snow there and the wind blew {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(strong). . It was very cold. At that time, we {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(hear) beautiful music from a restaurant. When we went in, we saw a lot of people there. Then we had some rice and chicken there. 

Happy time always went fast. When we got back home, it was 9:00 p. m. We enjoyed{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(our) that day. We were {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(tire) but happy.
