M: I wanted the best restaurant {#blank#}2{#/blank#} your birthday. And I know you like French food. Let's begin with a cocktail(鸡尾酒) and then look at the menu.

W: I don't want to look at it because {#blank#}3{#/blank#} always takes me a year to make up my mind. Any suggestions?

W: They have snails(蜗牛)! But I wouldn't dare eat them. They might make me sick.

M: I feel the same way about snails. I think I'll have roast duck(烤鸭). It comes with vegetables and potatoes.

    Last Friday, my friend David called me and invited me and our friend Tom to a party in his university. Tom and I are in{#blank#}1{#/blank#} same class. We both wanted to go to the party, but there was a problem—we'd have a final exam on the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (come) Monday.

    Tu Yoyo was honored with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Oct. 5. She was the first Chinese citizen {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(win) a Nobel Prize in science. Tu {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(share) the prize with the Irish-born William Campbell and Satoshi Omura of Japan.

    Tu is a researcher at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine now. She  {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(give) the prize for  {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (develop) artemisinin (青蒿素) , a new drug therapy against malaria( 疟疾)， {#blank#}6{#/blank#} has saved millions of lives worldwide, especially in developing countries.

    Tu and her colleagues joined a government project to find a new malaria drug in the late 1960s. They made 380 herbal extracts from two thousand recipes from traditional Chinese medical books. In 1971, after nearly two hundred  {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (fail), Tu's team  {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(final) found an extract that was 100% effective against the malaria parasites-atremisinin. In 2001, the World Health Organization made artemisinin {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (it) first choice in the treatment of malaria.

    “The discovery of artemisinin is a gift to mankind from traditional Chinese medicine. It's the achievement of the research team. Winning the prize is  {#blank#}10{#/blank#} honor for Chinese science and traditional Chinese medicine,” Tu said.

    In elementary school, George wasn't {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (exact) popular, but he always had a couple of really good friends. In middle school, he was really good at science and math. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} most kids were going to the movies on weekends, George preferred to design his own special projects. He dreamed of owning his own technology company someday. When George got to high school, some of the other students made {#blank#}3{#/blank#} of him for being into books and computers. This made George very upset, but he tried not to let anything keep his dream from {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (achieve). George got excellent grades and was admitted {#blank#}5{#/blank#} both Harvard and Yale, but he decided to go to Stanford {#blank#}6{#/blank#} there were many opportunities for people {#blank#}7{#/blank#} wanted to work in Silicon Valley. This was the first time George {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (feel) accepted by the people around him. He took many computer classes, and kept designing his own projects on weekends. During the summer months, he would take extra classes, and he ended up {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (graduate) a year early. He took a job {#blank#}10{#/blank#} a computer programmer at Apple. After five more years there, George left to start his own company, finally realizing his childhood dream.

    As an attractive city in the Netherlands, Amsterdam is one of the most bicycle-friendly{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(city)in the world, having over 800, 000 bikes in the capital. By comparison, the city has a population of only 750, 000, less than {#blank#}2{#/blank#}number of bikes. According to a survey{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(make)5 years ago, 490, 000 people used bicycles every day.

    Up to now, people in Amsterdam{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(enjoy)the convenience of cycling for decades. The city has special facilities for cyclists, {#blank#}5{#/blank#}can be used for free. Compared with other transportation in the city, bikes are{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(clean)and less expensive while also{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(offer)health benefits.

    {#blank#}8{#/blank#}reason for bicycle riding is that bicycle traffic is{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(relative)safe. Amsterdammers ride a wide variety{#blank#}10{#/blank#}bicycles. Many tourists also discover Amsterdam by bike, which is a typical Dutch way.
