Tiredness, coughing, a runny nose and a sore throat—among all sicknesses there is probably none more common than the flu (流感), which we all get now and then. However, bird flu is a completely different story.

In 2003, the H5N1 bird flu swept across 15 countries, including China, with sufferers reporting chest pain, difficulty breathing, fever and severe coughing. More than 600 people were infected, and about 60 percent died. Now, another type of bird flu hit Shanghai and three neighboring provinces, and this time the virus is called H7N9. By the afternoon of April 11, the new virus had taken nine lives out of 35 infected, according to Xinhua News Agency.

The "H" and "N" in the virus' name refer to two kinds of proteins (蛋白质) on the surface of the virus. Any change of the numbers of the two proteins indicates a new mutation(变异). Most of the mutations only affect birds, such as chickens and pigeons, and don't normally spread to humans. But once they do, the results can be disastrous.

"Any time an animal influenza virus crosses to humans, it is a cause for concern, " Malik Peiris, virologist (病毒学家) at the University of Hong Kong, told Nature magazine. Take the SARS epidemic (传染病) in 2003 as an example. The virus behind the disease is thought to have jumped to humans from animals. The virus was a complete "stranger" to human bodies, which hadn't developed an immunity (免疫力) against it.

But there is something more about the new H7N9 bird flu. Unlike the H5N1 bird flu, which causes severe sickness in birds, the H7N9 has been evolving under the radar(悄悄地) since it travels between birds without causing noticeable illness. That makes it difficult to keep track of the disease.

The good news is that there's so far no sign that the virus is spreading from person to person. But since there is no vaccine (疫苗) for the disease yet, the World Health Organization recommends that you wash your hands after meeting with sick people and before and after you eat or prepare food, and they also suggest avoiding contact with birds or their eggs.

(1)、Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text?
A、The H5N1 bird flu turned out to have something to do with the SARS epidemic. B、More than 600 people across the world died from the H5N1 bird flu in 2003. C、Most of the mutations of the proteins in the bird flu virus are harmful to both birds and humans. D、The name, H7N9 bird flu, shows that there have been new mutations of the proteins in the virus.
(2)、With the example of the SARS epidemic in Paragraph 5, the author intends to   .
A、introduce where the SARS virus came from B、inform us of the harmful effects of the SARS epidemic ten years ago C、show the horrible effects an animal influenza virus can have once it spreads to humans D、compare the differences between the SARS epidemic and the H7N9 bird flu
(3)、What makes the H7N9 bird flu more frightening than the H5N1 bird flu according to the text?
A、It can cause severe sickness in birds. B、It can spread from person to person. C、It affects a greater number of birds. D、It doesn't sicken birds and thus can spread unnoticed.
(4)、What are people advised to do to protect themselves against the H7N9 bird flu?

a. To get vaccinated for the disease.   b. To keep away from birds and their eggs.

c. To stop eating chickens and ducks.   d. To avoid meeting with sick people.

e  To wash hands thoroughly and regularly.

A、a, b B、c, d C、b, e D、a, e

My family recently did our first major road trip, traveling from our Maryland home to Disney World in Florida. Though we're no strangers to travel, a trip of this length was a new experience for us with three children. What helped us enjoy our trip so much? Our schedule, of course! So keeping a schedule when you travel can help make your trip a success.

    Don't sleep the day away.

I know you're on vacation. The kids have a break from school, and you're excited to be out of the office. Let everyone sleep for a bit, but still make it a point to rise at a reasonable hour and get active to start the day. Not only will you see and do more on your trip, but it will make it easier to eat regularly, get the kids down at nap time (午觉), and then go to bed without a struggle.

    Eat regularly.

Time is easy to go by while you're running through a theme park, or exploring (考察) a museum. Be prepared for meals because hungry kids are often quick to turn into a headache for you. Pack a snack and drink bag and make sure to stop regularly for a bite to eat while you're out. Keeping a regular meal schedule can help everyone keep up their energy and enjoy the day.

    Take a nap.

Does your baby take a daily nap? Naps are very important for baby's development. They also help little ones to pick up their strength, or vacations can be exhausting (疲惫的) for little minds and bodies.

Go to bed at a reasonable hour.

Everyone can get tired out on vacation. Don't allow anyone to stay up late every night. Mom, dad, and kids are all sure to be miserable if they don't get enough sleep. If bedtime gets delayed (推迟), adjust your travel plans accordingly.

Academic learning is usually in the spotlight at school, but teaching elementary-age students “soft” skills like self-control and how to get along with others might help to keep at-risk kids out of criminal trouble in the future.

Once a program called Fast Track was started in the early 1990s for more than 7,600 children of 55 schools in America. They were identified by their teachers and parents to be at high risk for developing aggressive behavioral problems. The students were randomly divided into two groups; half took part in the intervention, which included a teacher-led curriculum, parent training groups, academic tutoring and lessons in self-control and social skills. The program, which lasted from first grade through 10th grade, reduced delinquency(少年犯罪), arrests and use of health and mental health services as the students aged through adolescence and young adulthood.

In another latest study, by looking at the data from nearly 900 students in previous findings, researchers found that about a third of the influence on future crime outcomes was due to the social and self-regulation skills the students learned from ages 6 to 11.

The academic skills, or hard skills like learning of physics, which were taught as part of Fast Track, turned out to have less of an influence on crime and delinquency rates than did the soft skills, which are associated with emotional(情绪的) intelligence. Soft skills might include teaching kids to work cooperatively in a group or teaching them how to think about the long-term consequences when they make a decision.

Researchers drew the conclusion that these soft skills should be emphasized even more in our education system and in our system of socializing children. Parents should do all they can to promote these skills with their children as should education policymakers. To the extent we can improve those skills, we can improve outcomes in delinquency.

Many people feel stressed out about buying and giving gifts around holidays. But have the holidays become too materialistic and more about the gifts than the feelings behind them?

Throughout the world, many cultures mark holidays with gifts and food.Holiday traditions bring people together and allow us to feel a part of family and community. The gifts and food that we share are all about expressing a sense of appreciation and joy.The gifts of a few generations ago were probably more common and homemade.Even the people who could afford expensive presents probably didn't do as much buying and spending as we do today.

But with our culture growing more commercial, sometimes the original meaning behind the tradition gets lost. Not only is the pressure on spending money on the right present, but many people also find that when gifts become the focus of a holiday,it puts too much emphasis on receiving. It's too easy to have high expectations of what's in that beautifully wrapped box—and that can set anyone up for disappointment. No wonder we often hear about people having the“holiday blues”—feeling sad or empty.

Not all people think the holidays are too materialistic,of course. Most appreciate the traditional aspects of the holidays. And some love shopping and are just fine with all the giving and receiving. But if you're feeling a little empty about the holidays, what can you do? One key to a relaxing and meaningful holiday is finding what works best for you, both in terms of gift giving and other holiday traditions.Putting some thought into what the holidays mean to you and then focusing your energies on those aspects that leave you feeling most satisfied can help you let go of the stuff that may be stressing you out.

We all know that exercise is good for your health. But some kinds of exercise may be better than others.

Running, for example, may help to protect against heart disease and other health problems. Running may also help you live longer. Researchers say it is not important how far you run. It also does not matter how fast or even how often you run. As advertisements for the running shoes Nike say, “Just Do It.”

Recently researchers studied more than 55,000 adults. About one-fourth of the adults reported running regularly. The study found these runners were considerably less likely than non-runners to die of any form of disease, including heart disease. In fact, the runners lived, on average, three years longer than the non-runners.

This study lasted 15 years. During that time, more than 3,400 of the individuals died. About 1.200 of the deaths were linked to heart disease, hear, attack or stroke.

One of the researchers is a man named D.C. Lee, a professor of Iowa State University Compared to non-runners, he said, runners showed a much lower risk of dying from some diseases. “Compared to non-runners, runners showed 30 percent lower risk of death by any causes, including heart attack, stroke and cancer. Also, runners compared to non-runners showed 45 percent lower risk of death by cardiovascular diseases(心血管疾病), including heart attack and stroke.”

    D. C. Lee and the other researchers found that speed, distance and how often one runs made little difference in reducing the risk of death. The runners in the study averaged between 10 and 16 kilometers per hour. Mr Lee said slower runners and those who only ran once or twice a week were helped nearly as much as those who ran faster and further. “And also we looked at the inning over time and we found that persistent runners(over six years)showed the biggest benefits, as well.”

With smart technology increasingly influencing all aspects of our lives, it is only a matter of time before someone invents “smart” shoes—ones that can be made based on personal needs. Called “ShiftWear”, the sneakers are the brainchild of a team of businessmen, and engineers led by New York-based designer David Coel.

The adaptable shoes can be customized by using a smart phone app. Shoe owners will have the option of selecting a design from a variety of HD pattern by famous artists or creating one themselves. The company's founders imagine a marketplace where artists can not only share but also sell their designs to others. Despite being electronic, the designs are clearly visible even in the brightest sunlight. What's even cooler is that by switching on a backlight, users can even show off their designs in the dark!

According to Coel, the sneakers will keep their charge “forever” if only images are displayed. Though they will need periodic recharging, active users have nothing to worry about. That's because the shoes are equipped with special walk-n-charge technology that powers the shoes—with every step. Inactive users also have options of charging the sneakers without using wires.

The bottom part of the shoes is covered with Kevler fibers, a kind of strong material, reducing normal wear and tear. Even better? They are completely waterproof (not let water through) and can even be thrown into an ordinary laundry machine for a quick wash! The company predicts that the shoes will range the price from $150 to $1000 depending on the size of the E-panels where the designs are displayed.

This is not the first time that electronics and shoes have combined. Lithuania-based iShuh Technology has come up with a similar concept that connects e-reader panels to a smart phone app via the Bluetooth. Whether these smart shoes become as popular as our smart devices remains to be seen, though they surely are attractive.
