A lot of boys and girls in western countries are wearing the same clothes, and many boys have long hair, so it is difficult to tell whether they are boys or not.

      One day an old man went for a walk in a park in Washington and when he was tired, he sat down on a chair by a swimming pool. A young person was standing on the other side of the pool.

     “Oh!” the old man said to the person sitting next to him, “Do you see the person with the loose clothes and long hair? Is it a boy or a girl?”

     “A girl,” said the person, “She is my daughter.”

     “Oh!” the old man said quickly, “Please forgive me. I don't know that you are her mother. ”

     “I'm not,” said the person, “I'm her father.”

    Do you suppose Darwin, one of the greatest scientists of all time, really did fools' (傻瓜的) experiments? Or did he do experiments that were so simple and basic (基础的) that other people just thought they were foolish?

    Sometimes, people think they already know the answer to a question or a problem．Sometimes, they really do know an answer, but without thinking it is important．

    Charles Darwin didn't just think he knew something．And, he believed all things could be important no matter how simple they seemed to be．

    Suppose you drop pieces of paper that are of exactly the same size and shape．If you drop them at the same time in the same place, they will fall in the same way．Now make one of the sheets of paper into a tight little ball and let it drop along with the other pieces．What happens? You have done an experiment that is so simple that you might think it couldn't be worth anything．

    But this simple experiment is important．It explains part of our present day understandings of physics (物理学) ideas that were worked out long ago by Galileo and Newton．And these understandings set aside some of ancient Greek (古希腊的) physics．

    The scientist sometimes stops to look at very simple things and to think very hard about them．Even the simplest idea, which we might think is foolish, can shake the foundations (基础) of science．

When I was about 14, I had a friend who liked to tell me my shortcomings(缺点). For example: I was very1 , I wasn't a top student, I talked too much. I was too proud and soon. I became so2 that I couldn't stand her at last. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.

My father3 me quietly and asked, "Are the things she says true or not? Jane, didn't you ever want to know what you're 4 like? Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said." I did a she told me. To my great surprise, I5 that about half the things were true. Some I couldn't change, like being very short. But many I could and I wanted to change. For the first time, I had a better understanding of 6 .

I brought the list back to my father7 he refused to read it. "That's just for you," he said, "You know better than any other person the truth about yourself. When people say something true, you'll finally find it will be 8 to you. Don't shut your ears. Listen to them all, but only hear the truth and do what you know. It is the 9 thing to do.

Father's 10 have returned to meat many important moments. In my life, I've never had a better piece of advice.

It was the last day of the school year. The classroom was filled with excitement. When our teacher, Mr. Johnson, walked in, holding a CD player, everyone's face lit up with a smile. We knew that this wasn't going to be another normal day, but a special one.

"Please calm down and sit," said Mr. Johnson, "I'm glad everyone's here for the final reading test of the year." When everyone cried, Mr. Johnson laughed, saying it was just a joke. Then he reminded us that we still had a job to do. "You need to clean out your desks and put all your things into your backpacks," he added gently.

As we began our task, Mr. Johnson turned on the CD player. The lively music made the room feel like a party. Some of us started singing along with the music, and others were dancing around their desks while they were cleaning them out. Even Mr. Johnson showed us a few dance steps, making everyone laugh heartily. After we finished cleaning, someone asked, "When is break time?" Mr. Johnson took out some balls and started playing with them. Suddenly, he let the balls drop and said, "Break time starts... now!"

Just as we were about to rush out, our headmaster, Mrs. Miller, appeared at the door. "Mr. Johnson!" She cried out. A moment of silence fell over the room as we thought, "Mr. Johnson might be in trouble." However, to our surprise, Mrs. Miller couldn't help but laugh at the sight and left us to enjoy our break.

During break time, Mr. Johnson surprised us with another treat. He went to the cafe and came back with ice creams for everyone. We all cheered for him!

As we walked back to the classroom, we passed Mrs. Miller's office. Someone joked, "Don't play with the ice creams, Mr. Johnson!" We all laughed together.

Everybody has his or her own hero in mind and is always trying to learn from the hero in life. As for me, my 1 is just that man. My grandfather had a small 2 . He also worked in a factory(工厂). 

One autumn, most of the farmers in the village were 3 , so he promised to help his neighbour harvest(收割) the corn as he often did. 4 , after harvesting his own corn, Grandpa's little corn machine broke. What was 5 , the factory where Grandpa worked made the workers have more work than usual. He had to 6 the farm early and didn't get back until very late. It seemed 7 to help out his neighbour because he really had no free time.

A few days later, after a long work in the factory, my grandpa went to the 13 . The weather was cold but clear. He cut all the corn through the night to 14 his word. 

Sometimes, when I want to 15 keeping my words, I'd see my grandfather cutting corn in the light of the harvest moon. Behind him, corn straws(麦秆) stand at attention in respect(尊敬) for a man who keeps his word. 

It was just after the fourth of July that my twin sister Grace and I were playing on the beach near Grandparents' house. The sky was as clear as the water. I saw Mum coming toward us with her camera and a Santa's hat. 

"I'm glad Mum's taking our Christmas picture now, so we don't have to get it done at a studio this year, " Grace said. 

The Christmas picture is a big deal in our house. Mum prints the photo on the Christmas cards. Mum says that sharing her"angels" at Christmas is one of her greatest holiday joys. In fact, in the year we were born, Mum dressed us to look like angels and stuck feathery wings to our backs. Grace and I, in every Christmas photo, tried to smile as we stood uncomfortably in scratchy (扎人的) dresses. It's a little embarrassing when our family and friends talk about it every year. 

When Mum printed last year's photo and I saw the expression on my face, I said, "Next time, maybe  ▲  so our smiles look real. "

"We're always happy in our bathing suits at the beach, " Grace pointed out. 

So Mum agreed to try a beach photo this year. That's why we were there. 

After a while, Grandpa came over. "What are you girls up to?"

"Making a snowman for the photo, "I said. 

I had an idea. I asked Grandpa to lie in the sand, "Come on, Grace. Let's cover him!"

"Bottle caps for buttons(纽扣) and sticks for arms, " said Grace. 

 We made sand around Grandpa's head and his body. He made a fine"snowman". 

"Mum, come quick!" I said. 

But before Mum could take the picture, Grandpa jumped up and shouted, running to ward the sea. Mum laughed and took a picture of that, but it was not the picture we were hoping for!

I felt a raindrop. "It looked like another year of scratchy dresses with smiles not true, " disappointedly I threw myself back onto the wet sand. It felt scratchy against my sunburned back, like those holiday dresses. Then I began to plow the sand with my arms and legs, just like doing star jumps lying down. 

"Mum, come look!"I shouted. 

"A sand angel! Good idea, Caroline!" She took a photo. Grace threw on the Santa hat and lay next to me. Our arms and legs moved up and down. "Keep going. Great! I got it!" said Mum. She smiled with pride…

We finished our Christmas cards the day after Thanksgiving that year. Below the photo, I wrote, "Smiling Angels in the Snow!"
