Simple ways to improve your written English

    Many people think it is really difficult to improve (提高) their writing in English. Don't worry, though. Here are some simple steps that you can take to improve your written English.

    Increase your vocabulary.

    To express yourself clearly, you need a good active vocabulary. That's not just being able to know lots of words — it means actually being able to use them correctly.

    Tip: When you learn a new word, try to learn all the forms of that word.

    People often say that we learn to write best by reading. Reading in English is useful in many ways. It is a great way to get an idea of the different styles of writing and see how to use words properly.

    Tip: Learning shouldn't be boring. Read each text several times to make sure you understand how to use new words and expressions in the text.

    Improve your grammar.

    Grammar is very important because it improves the quality (质量) of your writing.

    Tip: The first time, look for general mistakes and the second time look for mistakes with the grammar point you are studying at the moment.

    Just do it!

    The best way to improve your writing is to get a pen and paper and write. Be prepared to write several versions (版本) of each text.

A. Know your readers.

B. Read widely and often.

C. Always check your writing twice.

D. Remember, practice makes perfect!

E. Choose books or articles that interest you.

F. Use simpler language and shorter sentences to show your ideas.

G. Do this by learning new words with example sentences, not just word lists.

    Lack of motivation drags people down in their language learning and high motivation pulls them up. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Reward yourself after each hour of concentrated study.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} After each hour reward yourself in whatever way is most appealing. Here are some common 5-minute rewards. A cup of coffee, a quick phone call, a short bike ride, 5 minutes of TV sport, walking the dog, etc.

    Remove distractions.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Listening to songs in the foreign language while you have a food break could make you feel still on target while stopping the distraction of hunger.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Some of the ideas students report for keeping themselves motivated go beyond just the language. Here are two ideas. I try to cook Spanish food. To feed interest in the country, I look at posters, pictures, articles, books.

Look for motivation in the wider world

    Keep your interest alive by watching movies, and taking time to have contact with native speakers. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} You can provide conversation in Chinese for overseas students, and in exchange they spend an hour another day talking their language with you. How to be a teenage role model

    In today's world, most teen role models(楷模)are famous people. They appeal to the teenagers a lot with their looks, money and fame. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} If you are a teen out there and you want to inspire your peers(同龄人), here are a few steps that you should follow:

Build confidence.

    People always believe in those who believe in themselves.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Build on these strengths and let them help you to develop into the kind of role model you want to be.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Having a unique character can really draw others to you more than being the same as others. This does not mean that you should give up the same interests you have with your friends, but just try to be a leader rather than a follower of others.

Be humble.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Many people respect those who have accomplished a lot in their lives but are still down to earth. Remember just because you have found your confidence doesn't mean you should look down upon others.

    Play the role you have created for yourself.

    After you have gotten a positive image(形象) of yourself and a good relationship with your peers, stick to it! Be guided by your desire(欲望) to be a role model in everything you do.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    Having mastered the above steps, you will start noticing the positive influence you are having on others. Keep trying to better yourself as you continue to inspire others.

    Organic exercise is a good fit for people looking to train functionally. It is defined as exercise that is similar to the type of physical activity performed by ancient hunter-gatherer ancestors. Organic exercise is generally preformed in natural or outdoor settings. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Organic exercise may include such activities as walking, jogging, swimming, hiking or rock climbing.

    When it comes to organic exercise, one of its most significant benefits is its limited reliance on equipment. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Going for a jog, walking, or even hiking does not require tools, weights, or even hiking does not require tools, weights, or other products, and therefore, is fairly inexpensive.

    Since the types of activity emphasized in organic exercise programs are similar to those performed as part of daily life, they do not require extensive or long amounts of practice to obtain proficiency(精通). {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Therefore the type of activity recommended in an organic workout routine can be performed by beginning or advanced exercisers alike with relative ease.

    While the type of exercise recommended in an organic workout may be easy enough to perform, the intensity at which it is recommended can be too much for some individuals. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Individuals who are new to exercise or suffer from a chronic health condition that limits their physical ability may find it difficult to perform exercise that is especially strenuous.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Individuals who are new to exercise may want to talk with their health care provider before choosing this type of activity. In some cases, it may be better to start off with a more traditional workout and slowly transition to organic exercise than starting with this regimen(养生法)right off the bat.

A. Weigh both the benefits and drawbacks.

B. In fact, it can be done nearly anywhere, any time.

C. Therefore it requires very little helping equipment.

D. Choosing the right types of organic exercise is important.

E. Most adults already know how to hike, swim or dig, for example.

F. In fact, one of the biggest drawbacks is the emphasis on high-intensity exercise.

G. While organic exercise may be a good choice for some, it is right for all adults.

    Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to afford all of that fancy equipment used in the gyms{#blank#}1{#/blank#} Now here are some effective exercises that you can do at home, without the need for any equipment.

    Jumping Jacks (开合跳)—These are always fun, as they bring back memories of being a kid.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Well, surprise- they are also great aerobic exercise, and good for warming up, too.

You will be building up arm strength and working out muscles(肌肉) in your chest area.

Light weight lifting—No, you don't need to go out and buy expensive weights for this! Just use whatever you can find in your house. Start out with something lighter, such as a can of peas.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Why Stand in Line on Black Friday?

    Standing in line is a pain. At the post office. At the box office. At a restaurant.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}The first spot outside some Best Buy stores is usually claimed (认领) weeks in advance, often by a person in a tent. Shoppers at Walmart will print out maps of the store, with circles around their primary targets.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    "These queues are quite different than the usual annoying ones we come across day to day at the ATM or in the subway," said Richard Larson, a professor at MIT who has spent years studying line behavior. "Once a year," he said, "the lines are exciting. They're the kind you might tell your grandchildren about."{#blank#}3{#/blank#}Billie LeClere, 45, was first in line on Thursday at Walmart in Manchester, Iowa. She said she was a regular Black Friday shopper. But this year, she came with a specific purpose: to get a good deal on a new TV. She and her husband had recently separated, and he had taken the old TV earlier that day. "The marriage died, not the TV," she said.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} "It's going to be nice to have something that's newer-and it's mine, not his."

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#}The following are two of the typical results. The "gotta have it" atmosphere makes people more anxious. Sometimes the behaviour of the queue turns violent. Therefore,lines test patience,personal space especially on Black Friday, when the crowds can be overwhelming (势不可挡的).

A. Shoppers are excited to buy gifts.

B. But on Black Friday, it's an experience.

C. Moreover, the crowds are queuing for good deals.

D. Many families are queuing to chat with each other.

E. The experience gave her a sense of accomplishment.

F. They are trying to turn the experience into an adventure.

G. The behaviour of people in lines has inspired decades of research.

How to Meet New People

    It is easy to find a place where people gather. But once you're in a room full of people, then what? The trick is finding a way to approach someone and get them talking to you.

    Prepare to meet new people before you arrive. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. Don't think in terms of yes or no questions. You should consider questions that will allow the person to contribute more than a one-word answer to the conversation.

    Arrive at your event or place. Don't panic when you walk in the door. Take your time and look over the room. If this is a classroom, take a seat and look around the room. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}, take time to enjoy the art while looking at the people. Don't rush into talking to someone. You have time, so just get a feel for the group.

    Approach someone. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. But remember, if the person is at the event alone, they may also be shy and try to break out and meet people. You need to make them feel comfortable by chatting with them.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. Keep them talking and talk yourself—remember  conversation goes in two directions. You may have a couple of awkward moments, but if you have a few items planned to talk about, you'll find that they'll start adding their own questions and information to the conversation.

    Don't forget to ask them for a friendship follow-up. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}, try asking your new friend if they'd like to go to another event with you. If it is a repeat event, such as a class, try asking them if they'd like to meet for coffee before the next class to study the material.

A. If it is a one-time event

B. If this is an art show

C. If you have picked out someone to approach

D. Mentally pull out your prepared questions

E. You may not meet your next best friend on your first try

F. You might find it easiest to approach someone who is also alone

G. Sit down and write out a list of potential questions you can ask someone
