How to make friends at a new school

    Starting with a new school can be difficult. Everything seems to be different, and you don't even know where to go for your own classes. However, if you use these skills, you can quickly turn some of those strangers into friends.

    Be yourself.

    If some people don't accept you, they're not the kind of friends you need. People often stay together because they have similar interests. For example, someone who does a lot of sport may make friends with those who also run or swim a lot.

    Remember to be nice to the people you meet at your new school. If you think that you will say something that may make them feel sad, do not say anything and just nod your head if they talk to you. Also, remember to be as helpful as possible!

    Believe in yourself.

    A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don't keep your eyes on the floor. Raise your head and make eye contact (目光接触) with other people. Introduce yourself. Tell them your name and where you're from.

    Remember people's names.

    You like it when people use your name, and so do other people. Besides, ask them in a kind way if they have a nickname (昵称). You'd be surprised how often this might come in handy.

    Mondays are kind of annoying.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} A recent survey says that most people get the pre-work “Sunday blues”. Starting your Monday feeling sad, anxious and unorganized is hardly the way to kick off a healthy week.

    The solution? Set aside a little time on Sunday to purposefully prepare yourself for the five days ahead, suggests women's health expert Marsha Hudnall.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    Do some meal preparations.

    Figuring out what to have for dinner on weeknights can be surprisingly stressful. Stretching out a menu plan on Sunday and swinging by the grocery store for ingredients will help you eat well. Go a step further by chopping and cooking vegetables and a protein (like a roast chicken or scrambled eggs).{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Or finally attempt a different diet you've been meaning to try. For easy dinner planning, just order, and you'll have a week's worth of raw materials for delicious and healthy meals.

    Start a Sunday stress-relief habit.

    “To be healthy, we have to take care of body and mind,” says Hudnall. Stress has a major impact on health and our ability to concentrate.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Four ideas to try: a guided meditation with the help of an app; forest bathing-a practice known as shinrin-yoku in Japan, which basically means taking a long walk or hike in a wooded area; gentle exercise like yoga; or time cuddling and playing with your pet.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    Why not prepare your favorite clothes for Monday? Studies show that what you wear can have a significant effect on your mood. So make Monday the day you wear your favorite clothes or show the latest addition to your wardrobe (衣橱). It's also a good idea to get some nice coffee or music ready, which will give you something to look forward to on your Monday commute.

A. Give yourself something to look forward on Monday.

B. Even Sunday afternoons turn sour as we think of the workweek ahead.

C. Then all you have to do is heat and plate when you come home from work.

D. Therefore, starting a Sunday stress-relieving habit can begin a week feeling strong and focused.

E. Try creating a relaxing and winding down Sunday night so that you can recharge and get ready for Monday.

F. Taking on just a few of these simple lips every Sunday will help you launch a productive, less stressful week.

G. Wailing until the last moment to do weekend chores like paying bills or doing laundry can leave you anxious and stressed on Sunday.

    Do you know what may make you seem to be not confident enough?{#blank#}1{#/blank#}.

    Giving reasons for your actions. Suppose you are having lunch with a group of people, and suddenly you drop your glass of coke on the floor. What will you do? Well, some people will just start to explain why it has happened.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} If you drop a glass or make a mistake, it won't change who you are. It's your right to make a mistake because you are a human being.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} You may have experienced a situation where you told a friend his performance wasn't that good and then he replied back immediately by saying, “No, no, no, it's just because I was tired” or “I was just thinking of something else”. Confident people listen to criticism and see whether it's true or not.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} However, if they know it's not true, they don't care much about it.

    Becoming a perfectionist. A perfectionist thinks that he lives in a perfect world so he tries to do everything perfectly.{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Confident people are not perfectionists. If they get a “B”, they may try to get an “A” next time, but if they get 99/100, they won't be unhappy about not getting a full mark because they know they're not perfect.

A. Confident people don't give reasons for their actions.

    Maybe once you lived with your roommates! Many of us live with a roommate at some stage. Sometimes, there can be problems. Who hasn't had an argument about whose turn it is to take out the rubbish or who should be the one to clear up after dinner? {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    You know that there's always someone else around, which can help you feel safer. There is always someone to talk to, so you never feel lonely. Besides these obvious benefits, there are some you may not notice. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    To examine the effect of living alone, Australian university researchers did much research and found that people living alone tended to eat less fresh food, which can have a significant negative effect on long-term health. However, those living with others generally benefited from a more varied diet compared to those living alone.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} The researchers believe the social and cultural roles played by cooking, food preparation and eating may be important considerations. For example, those living with friends have someone else to go shopping with, and thus are likely to buy high-quality fresh food regularly.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} If people living alone find they do not have the knowledge required to prepare a particular dish or cook a certain food, they may fall back on ready-made, less healthy food.

    However, if they live with at least one other person, they maybe able to ask for help.

    In addition, people living alone can eat whatever they want at any time of the day or night. However, it's helpful to have someone around who questions your decision to eat frozen pizza at 3 am. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    So, if you now live alone and find yourself fighting a losing battle against poor eating habits, why not consider sharing a home with someone else? You could encourage one another onto greater health and well-being.

A. Cooking skills maybe another factor.

B. In other words, roommates can draw your attention to unhealthy routines.

C. Living with a roommate could be good to share your expenses and contribute to your home's maintenance.

D. For example, we're actually more likely to eat healthier food when living with others.

E. What could explain these findings?

F. It's hard to find someone who doesn't grate on your nerves, has a similar cleanliness level as you and goes to bed at the same time.

G. However, living with another person also comes with many benefits.

Taking photos while on holiday is not an uncommon activity. Tourists do it all the time, but if you want to take things further, here are some tips that can help you along the way.

First of all, there is the matter of equipment. Of course, most people believe that the higher end your camera is, the better the photos will turn out. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} The quality of DSLR cameras (数码单反相机) is superior to the one of small cameras and smartphones, but only if you know how to adjust (调整) their settings. However, if you don't know how to do it, an iPhone camera is enough too. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}You can shoot amazing photos without having to travel with a large and heavy camera.

Secondly, you need to do some research in advance and discover the best photo spots. Your photos don't have to look like travel cards. On the contrary, you can catch the beauty of a place by finding its uncommon corners and subjects. For example, if you're going to a crowded city, don't just take photos of high buildings. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}You may see a new face of the city at that time.

Thirdly, you have to be patient. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}For the best picture, come back to the same spot several times or stay at one spot for some time. You might come across something special as you wait: a bird flying across an old temple, a mother and her baby passing by, or just the sun giving beautiful colors on the roofs. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

Take as many photos as you can and don't be disappointed if your first travel photos are not National Geographic material, because they will get better with time.

A. So this is the most important.

B. But that is only true in a way.

C. Its quality has increased a lot.

D. Don't forget that practice makes perfect.

E. I also enjoy photographing animals.

F. You may have to take several shots until you discover the right one.

G. Try street photography or take pictures at night.
