    As the proverb says, "Your tongue has the power of life and death." This means that your words have power to finally cause things to happen, even life or death.

    We may all experience the power of words in our life, even when we were very young.

    A child is blamed (责备) by teachers or parents, and after that, he might probably think of himself as a bad child. Most kids have that experience. They say it is important to praise children four times for each negative (负面的) word. Blaming will make things worse, while positive words are helpful especially when being in trouble or in need. When we fail the exam, encouraging words from our teachers or parents make us work harder at our lessons.

    Encouraging words can go quite a long way. They lift people up. For example, encouraging words to someone who is sad can help them make it through the day. Words can have a powerful effect on your brain. And it will in turn (相应地) have a great influence on your action.

Everything you do depends on what you choose to do. It's not your parents, your past relationships or your job, but you and only you that are responsible for every goal you set. If you have dreams in life, write them down and speak them out. Your words are likely to bring you out something amazing.

    Anne Zhang is a 21-year-old girl from Hangzhou, China. Now she studies in Britain. One day, when she was taking a train from London to Oxford, she heard loud noises on the train.

    Before, the train had been very quiet. Some people were resting while others were reading books or listening to music. Suddenly, a group of Chinese people laughed loudly as they played a game of cards.

    As it becomes easier for Chinese people to get visas(签证) to foreign countries, more and more of them are traveling abroad. However, their bad manners have given them a bad reputation (名声).

    Chinese always talk loudly in places like cafes and museums. They also spit (吐痰) and litter whenever they want and jump queues. Some Chinese tourists also like to write or draw pictures on famous buildings. In Singapore, Chinese tourists are fined(罚款) because they were smoking in Non-smoking areas.

    Some people may say that they can do everything that they want because they spend money in the country. In fact, this is not true. Besides enjoying ourselves, we should respect local customs and take care of the environment.

    Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Here, we look at two examples

    A recent study by researcher Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person's hearing ability.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}Think about violinists in an orchestra (管弦乐团). When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and pay no attention to the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to focus on certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.

    Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke (中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}Why does this work? Schlaug isn't sure. Music seems to make different parts of the brain work, including the damaged (损坏的) parts. This might help patients to use that part of the brain again.

    Music improves concentration (注意力), memory, listening skills, and our overall language abilities.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}Playing an instrument or singing can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp (敏锐的) as we get older. Music is not only enjoyable, it's also good for us in many other ways.

A. It can even help sick people get better.

B Music helps people solve some hearing problems.

C. Music improves certain language abilities in the brain.

D. The violinists develop their memories by playing the violin.

E Musicians hear better because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds.

F. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak.

G. In his study two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room

信息归纳

    It is believed that social networks allow people to make their online social circle larger. But having 150 friends on WeChat is not the same thing as having 150 friends in real life.

    In last week's Chitchat, we asked our readers how many "friends" did they have in their WeChat account(账户), and how many of them were "actual friends". Here are some of the top comments(评论).

    @left and right

    I have more than 1,000 friends in WeChat. However, the number of "friends" I communicate with daily is less than 50, most of whom are my classmates and families. So many friends are just there and we never speak any word.

    @Kris Wilson Choy

    I have almost 300 friends in my WeChat. However, people who I often send messages to is just 10. Most of these friends are classmates or people who work with me. Except work or studying, we hardly talk with each other during our spare time.

    @Monica

    To be honest, as an English teacher since 1981, I have more than 400 WeChat friends, most of whom are my students, students' parents, and workmates. Although we seldom meet face to face, our ties still remain normal. You see, they often ask me questions online, which I answer happily. Of course, sometimes I feel upset when they ask me to vote (投票) online or give likes. However, I generally do as requested, because it serves to glue our ties.
