    Do you feel sad? Happy? Angry? You may think that the way you show these emotions is unique. Well, think again. Even the expression of the most personal feelings can be classified, according to Mind Reading, a DVD exhibiting every possible human emotion.

    In the mid 1800s, Darwin divided the emotions into six types—anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise and enjoyment. More complex expressions of emotion were probably learned and therefore more specific to each culture. But now it is believed that many more facial expressions are shared worldwide. The Mind Reading DVD is a systematic visual record of these expressions.

    The project was designed by a Cambridge professor. His research team first had to define an "emotion". Using this definition, 412 emotion terms were identified and discussed, from "afraid" to "wanting".

    Then each expression is acted out by six different actors. "It was really clear when the actors had got it right," says Cathy Collis, who directed the DVD. "Although they were given some direction, the actors were not told which facial muscles they should move. "

    Someone who has tried to set such rules is the American, Professor Paul Ekman, who built database of how the face moves for every emotion. The face can make 43 distinct muscle movements. Ekman has also found that it may not be possible for people to reproduce them artificially. The most difficult expression to reproduce is the smile. It isn't only about stretching the lips, but tightening the tiny muscles around the eye. If we learnt to recognize whether someone was using their eye muscle when they smiled, we would be able to distinguish true enjoyment from false.

We could, when we get rid of that plastic, recycle it and reuse it, which replaces the need for raw materials.

    The report also calls on companies to improve methods for using plastics. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. And it calls for information about the way plastic is thrown out or removed from use. By putting a new value on plastic, industry has a special reason to clean up the environment. But all of the companies must join to deal with the problem.

    Try not to argue or complain. Cry.{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Do whatever it takes to sound calm when you need to.

    Mike Townsend works at Total Recall, a mobile phone recycling company. "Don't throw your old phone away. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}If you throw it away, it goes with other rubbish to become landfill. In other words, it is put in a big hole in the ground-and it becomes a big problem," he says.

    Mobile phones contain some poisonous materials. If your phone goes to a landfill, these poisonous materials can get out and get into the water under the ground. That's the water we need to drink or water goes into rivers or the ocean. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} That's a lot of landfill and a lot of poisonous materials.

    "At Total Recall, we separate the old phones into pieces. Most of the materials in the mobile phones can be recycled and used again.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} For example, phone batteries contain nickel and cadmium. The nickel is used to make steel, and the cadmium can be used to make new batteries," explains Mike.

    "{#blank#}5{#/blank#}You can usually just take it into a mobile phone shop and they will send it to us," says Mike.

    Can We Stop Food Longing Through Imaginary Eating?

    Are you fighting an urge to reach for chocolate? Then, let it melt in your mind, not in your mouth. According to the recent research, imagining eating a specific food reduces your interest in that food, so you eat less of it.

    This reaction to repeated exposure to food—being less interested in something because you've experienced it too much—is called habituation.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    The research is the first to show that habituation can occur through the power of the mind. "If you just think about the food itself—how it tastes and smells—that will increase your appetite," said Carey More wedge, a well-known psychologist. "It might be better to force yourself to repeatedly think about chewing and swallowing the food in order to reduce your longing.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Visualizing yourself eating chocolate wouldn't prevent you from eating lots of cheese," he added.

    More wedge conducted an interesting experiment. 51 subjects were divided into three groups. One group was asked to imagine putting 30 coins into a laundry machine and then eating three chocolates.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}Another group was asked to imagine putting three coins into a laundry machine and then eating 30 chocolates. Lastly, a control group imagined just putting 33 coins into the machine—with no chocolates.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}When they said they had finished, these were taken away and weighed. The results showed the group that had imagined eating 30 chocolates each ate fewer of the chocolates than the other groups.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#}Physical signals—that full stomach feeling—are only part of what tells us we've finished a meal. The research suggests that psychological effects, such as habituation, also influence how much a person eats. It may lead to new behavioral techniques for people looking to eat more healthily, or have control over other habits.
