    I love my iPhone—it's my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my computer, as it stores all of my writing and thoughts. Though I love these devices (装置) of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from them and truly communicate with others.

    I teach history in a high school. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and share their ideas with each other in the classroom. I have a rule- no computers, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule before class, some of them were not happy at all.

    Most students think that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There's a bit of truth to that. Some students believe that I am anti-technology. There's no truth in that at all. I love technology and try 10o keep up with it so I can relate to my students.

    The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations. Interruptions (打断) by technology often break concentration and allow for t00 much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and to make connections between the course material and the class discussion.

    I've been teaching my history class in this way for many years and students realize that with deep conversation, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.

    I'm not saying that I won't ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change. A few hours of technology- free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.

In a small room, Jenny was lying in bed waiting for an operation (手术), nervous and worried. To her surprise, a new patient was sent into the room. After a kind greeting (打招呼), they began to talk. The 80-year-old newcomer was named Susan. She had two children. Her son was boss of a big company and her daughter worked in a TV station. As her children were too busy to take care of Susan, she lived in an old people's home. Susan was proud of her children who had wonderful jobs and made a lot of money. Jenny really envied (羡慕)Susan. Compared with Susan, Jenny was nothing but an ordinary (普通的) woman from the countryside. Her children were just ordinary workers.

Soon, it was supper time, Jenny's daughter cooked several dishes which were her favorite. Jenny invited Susan to share her supper, but she did not accept the invitation. Susan was expecting her daughter when she received a call. Unfortunately (不幸), her children couldn't come to visit her. Worse still, Susan had missed the mealtime in the hospital. She lay in bed, disappointed and silent. Jenny's daughter offered to buy her some food but she had no appetite (食欲) at all.

The next day, Jenny and Susan would go through a series of regular medical checks (一连串的常规检查) before the operation. Jenny's daughter took care of her carefully while Susan was still alone. Out of sympathy (出于同情), Jenny's daughter helped to queue up (排队), fill in different forms and register (挂号) for Susan. For several days in hospital, even during her operation, Susan's children didn't come. Susan really envied Jenny as her daughter looked after her all the time until she recovered and moved out of hospital.

Care from the loved ones can really make one happy and encouraged, especially for old parents. So don't forget to look after your parents even while you are busy working.

    Xie Wanying (October 5, 1900-Febrary 28.1999), better known by her pen name Bing Xin, was one of the most well-known Chinese writers of the 20th century. Many of her works were written for young readers. Her pen name Bing Xin carries the meaning of a pure heart, and is taken from a line in a Tang Dynasty poem by Wang Changling.

    Bing Xin was born in Fuzhou, Fujian, but moved to Shanghai with her family when she was seven months old, and later moved yet again to the coastal port city of Yantai, Shandong, when she was four. Such a move had a key influence on Bing Xin's personality and philosophy (哲学) of love and beauty, as the hugeness and beauty of the sea greatly opened young Bing Xin's mind and heart. It was also in Yantai, Bing Xin first began to read the classics of Chinese literature, such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Water Margin, when she was just seven.

    In 1913, Bing Xin moved to Beijing. She started her writing career as she wrote for a school newspaper at Yanjing University where she was a student and published her first novel. Bing Xin graduated from Yanjing University in 1923 with a bachelor's degree, and went to the United States to study at Wellesley College, earning a master's degree at Wellesley in literature in 1926. She then returned to Yanjing University to teach until 1936.

    In 1929, she married Wu Wenzao, her good friend when they were studying in the United States. In literature, Bing Xin founded the "Bing Xin Style" as a new literary style. She contributed a lot to children's literature in China such as A Myriad of Stars (1923), Spring Water (1923), Six-one sister (1924), To Young Readers (1926), Homeward South (1931), The Collected Works of Bing Xin (1932-1933). Bing Xin's literary career was productive. She wrote a lot of works — prose, poetry, novels, reflections and so on. There is a Bing Xin Literature Museum in Changle in Fujian Province. The Bing Xin Children's Literature Award is named in her honour.
