Customs on Eating

Food in China and western countries is different. China has about five thousand years' history. Chinese people may spend half of their time on food. They choose food very carefully. They only use fresh materials to make food. For example, they only eat fresh fish. Chinese people have a lot of ideas for cooking. They can cook a chicken in over ten ways. So Chinese food is very popular around the world. Western countries, like England or America, don't have fresh food because they buy their food from supermarkets. -They only sell stored materials. Western people also prefer fast food like hamburgers and chips. They are unhealthy for people's body. Western people are very good at making desserts and chocolates. They can make very good cakes and chocolates. These food are very sweet and can make people become fat quickly.

In China, when people invite others for a meal, they would pay for the meal, but it's not the same way in western countries. In western countries, people will think you only invite them but don't need to pay for them. They won't be happy if you pay for them.

Another difference in eating is that: Chinese people use chopsticks but western people use knives and forks.

Chinese people only have three meals in a day. But western people may have more. They usually have afternoon tea when they would have fruit or cakes with cheese.

Bamboo is one of the nature's most surprising plants. (1) 许多人称这种植物为树,但它是一种草。

Like other kinds of grass, a bamboo plant may be cut very low to the ground, but it will grow back very quickly. A Japanese scientist recorded one bamboo plant that grew almost 1.5 meters in 24 hours! Bamboo grows almost everywhere in the world except Europe.

(2)There are more than 1000kinds of bamboo that grow around the world on both mountains and plains (平原).

Not all bamboo looks the same. Some bamboo plants are very thin. They may only grow to be a few centimeters wide while others may grow to more than 30centimeters across. This plant also comes in different colors, from yellow to black to green.

Many Asian countries have been using bamboo for hundreds of years. They often use bamboo for building new buildings. As a matter of fact, the cables (绳索) that hold up the hanging bridge across the Min River in Sichuan are made of bamboo. The bridge has been in use for more than 1,000years,and is still holding strong.

In Africa,(3)engineers are teaching poor farmers how to use bamboo to find water . These African countries need cheap ways to find water because (4 )they have no money, and their fields often die from no rain and no water. It seems that bamboo is one of the best things they can use.Bamboo pipes and drills (钻) can help to make the poor thirsty fields be watered.

In early spring, the changing temperature usually makes a number of Chinese people uncomfortable. Cold air, bringing rain or even snow, easily tears up(破坏) the warmth of the spring within a night(一夜之间).

However, with the coming of Guyu-the Grain(谷物) Rain, the blue sky and gentle winds would finally stay. Falling usually on or around April 20 every year, Guyu is the sixth of the 24 solar terms(节气). It means the beginning of a lively summer and people get busy from now on.

    Sow(播种) grains

This is an important period of the growth of grains. The ancient Chinese already knew that as Guyu comes, the weather will become warm enough for sowing. The farmers usually catch the chance to plant rice, corn and beans.

    Hope for safety and harvest

For those living near the sea, they will hold some ceremonies(仪式) on Guyu, hoping for safety as well as harvest during the coming fishing season.

    Watch the peony

It's also a great time to see the peony(牡丹), which is known as “the Queen of All Flowers” in Chinese culture. As a result, watching peonies becomes one of the most enjoyable activities for many. The flower is said to be the favourite of Empress(女皇) Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty, who was the only woman ruler in Chinese history.

    Pick tea leaves

Tea leaves picked before Guyu are among the best tea leaves. People believe that the tea leaves picked on the day of Guyu can make eyes clear and drive away bad luck. So the habit of drinking tea at this time of year has become a tradition in some places of China.

Students generally find it difficult to prepare for a speaking test because they have nobody to practise    (A)    or correct their mistakes. But that doesn't mean you can't test yourself.

Whether you're taking an end-of-course test or an official (官方 ) exam like PET or IELTS, there's one great tool you can use: your mobile phone. Nearly every smartphone these days has an inbuilt recording feature (内置录音功能) which you can use to test your speaking skills. You can record yourself speaking, play the recording back, and correct your own mistakes.

I practised this way in Italian. I chose some speaking questions from PET and did the exercise three times. The first time, I made a few grammar mistakes and didn't speak for long enough. The second time was a bit better, and the third time was nearly perfect.

All in all, I made a real improvement with my grammar, pronunciation and how long I spoke. Also, recording myself put me under the pressure (压力) I would experience during an important speaking test.

Many students found this method    (B)   . Nelia, from Brazil, said that she could hear her mistakes when she listened to her voice. She was mainly using the wrong verb tense (时态) and using prepositions(介词) incorrectly. When she tried the exercise again, she got its right! Donghyeon, from South Korea, said that the exercise helped him to improve his English skills in general.
