What's your pain telling you?

    Is that pain you feel in your back, neck or shoulders just a short ache from your new exercise menu? Or is there something deeper and more serious at work? Either way, you decide not to pay attention to it.

    "Pain is a warning system; it tells us that something is wrong," says Bradford Butler, a doctor. "Continual pain goes further. It is telling you that a whole system in your body isn't working right."

    For many people and their doctors, the first reaction for pain, and sometimes the second and third reactions as well, is to take some painkillers and go on your way.

    "That doesn't solve the problem," Butler says. "Too often, with back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain or other continual pain, many doctors focus on reducing(减少) the pain rather than finding out the cause."

    Imagine this, you wake up midnight with an unbearable toothache, and then visit a doctor who discovers a huge cavity(空洞)but, instead of repairing the cavity, just gives you some powerful medicine for the pain and sends you home." Left untreated, the pain would get worse and the damage to the tooth would worsen, leading to bigger and more expensive medical process later on, "Butler says.

    Butler offers some advice for those whose bodies are trying to warn them that something is wrong.

    Choose your doctor wisely. Blind faith (信任) in any doctor is not the answer. Butler says, "Doctors have their own specialty and make sure you find someone who will really help you with your problem."

    Don't let your body resetting its pain level fool you. What happens when you let the pain go? Your body adapts (适应) . Butler says, "When your body gets used to the pain, you think the problem must be gone. While in reality, your body's pain setting has been raised. The only time you're feeling pain is when you're already in terrible poor condition. "

    Think of prevention. Dental (牙科的) patients are encouraged to have regular check-ups, whether they're in pain or not, so the doctor can work on potential (潜在的)problems. "That's the way for other pain," Butler says. "Being free of symptoms(症状)doesn't mean you don't have big problems. It just means that you don't know they're developing. "

    "We need to listen to our pain and fix whatever is wrong as soon as possible," Butler says. "You won't get better until you find the cause of the problem."

In recent years, we can see some changes on P. E. classes at schools. Besides basic trainings like running and jumping, students are having a lot of fun now. Here are some examples.

Tai Chi

Gao Ming enjoys the Tai Chi class at his school. "At first, we only learned Tai Chi in P. E. class. Day by day, my classmates fell in love withit! There is a Tai Chi competition in our school every year. Different from ballgames, doing Tai Chi makes me calm down and relaxed. It helps me get ready for other classes." said Gao, "I also keep practicing in my free time and it has been a part of my life."

Hip-hop

Ren Hui is a fan of hip-hop and the school helps her develop the hobby. "We can choose the type (类型) of our P. E. class at the beginning of every term and I always go for hip-hop." Ren said "It doesn't need much experience, so anyone can have a try. Every Monday, we learn a new movement. Then we review it on Thursday and Friday. I'm very happy to make new friends during dancing!"

Diabolo (空竹)

Playing diabolo, a traditional folk game, is a class for nearly all the students at Nanjing Yuhua Primary School. The much-loved sport includes whole-body exercise. "It is my favorite sport. It can help me train my reaction (反应) speed. Most importantly, it's so cool and fun. " Ma Jiaying, an eighth-grade girl said.

根据短文的内容,从方框所给的选项中选出能够填入短文空白处的最佳选项。

Tired after eating?

 After a busy morning, lunch can feel like just something necessary but sometimes it also makes you want to take a break at your desk.

{#blank#}1{#/blank#} This is because when humans eat, our blood sugar level is raised after receiving energy from food, which may cause tiredness after meal. Feeling tired can make it hard to focus on the rest of your studies and activities. Here's why and how to improve the situation.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Some people overeat instead of stopping when they feel full. For example, when having buffet, people often eat more than they expect. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Because we usually feel tired after working the whole morning without breakfast. This will make us eat more at lunch.

 The make up of certain foods can also cause you to feel tired. If you had a meal high in fat, such as a hamburger or a pizza, that could make you feel tired. Meals high in added sugar can have the same effect. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

 If you don't get enough sleep, your body increases production of ghrelin, which sends a " feed me" signal to your brain. Not getting enough rest can also have a bad influence on your decision making skills. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. It's normal to feel tired after lunch.

B. So make sure you sleep for eight to ten hours every night.

C. A common reason for feeling tired after a meal is eating too much.

D. However, not eating breakfast can also lead to overeating later in the day.

E. So taking a walk after a big meal is a great way to make you feel less tired.
