Daniel Davila can often {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (see) walking around the city of San Francisco. Sometimes people are surprised to see him walking   {#blank#}2{#/blank#}any shoes or socks, {#blank#}3{#/blank#}Daniel doesn't mind at all. He likes to walk barefoot, and so {#blank#}4{#/blank#} 740 other members of Dirty Sole Society, the club that Daniel started years ago. Daniel's idea for this is to encourage others to live{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (free) —free of shoes.

    According to Daniel, the barefoot life has many advantages. {#blank#}6{#/blank#}most important is simply that it feels good. He also says that  {#blank#}7{#/blank#} ( walk) barefoot allows you to experience the world directly by touching it with your feet. In addition, the feet do not smell so much  {#blank#}8{#/blank#} they stay dry, making it hard for bacteria to grow. And of course, walking barefoot keeps your feet{#blank#}9{#/blank#} good shape, so it's actually{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (healthy) than wearing shoes.

    How will our continuously growing population affect our way of life, our environment, even our planet? No matter how you look at it, we will face {#blank#}1{#/blank#}extremely serious problem. By the middle of the 21^st century, we {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(use) up all the oil that drives our cars if at the rate we're going. Even if scientists develop some new {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(way)of feeding the human race, the crowded conditions on the earth will make {#blank#}4{#/blank#}necessary for us to look for open space somewhere else. But none of the planets in our solar system are able  {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(support) life at present. One possible solution {#blank#}6{#/blank#}the problem, however, has recently been suggested by an American scientist, Professor Carl Sagan. His idea is {#blank#}7{#/blank#}before the earth's resources are almost exhausted, it will be  {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(total)possible to change the atmosphere of Venus（金星）and so create a new world almost as large as earth itself.

    However, {#blank#}9{#/blank#} his idea is turned into reality, humans have a long way to go. On the one hand, Venus is much {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(hot)than the earth; on the other hand, there is only a tiny amount of water there.

    Dr. Ge Yun has helped many kids who were born with defects (缺陷), {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (include) me. She did my first two operations when I was a baby, which were the most important and {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (effect) ones.

    I don't remember the first two operations very well {#blank#}3{#/blank#} I do recall the third. Dr. Ge Yun was kind and eased me into the process. She tried everything she could {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (make)sure that I was okay. I {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (recent)saw a picture of me before my operation, and I knew what a big job she did.

    Dr. Ge Yun operates {#blank#}6{#/blank#} people with all types of birth defects. She also goes to other countries {#blank#}7{#/blank#} people cannot afford the treatment and helps them for free. Many people benefit from her new ways {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (invent)to fix birth defects of the head and face. She {#blank#}9{#/blank#}  (win)many awards so far.

    Though I was just one of the patients to her, to me she was {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (much)that just my doctor. She was and is my hero, and she returned the smile to me.

    The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the world's {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (long) cross-sea bridge, enters the history of human engineering and connection as a point of pride upon {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (it) opening to traffic at 9 a. m. on Oct.24, 2018.

    One day after the opening was announced at a ceremony {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (hold) in Zhuhai, the bridge's ports in three different administrative regions started serving travelers around-the-clock, opening 24 hours a day, seven days a week. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (ensure) faster boundary crossings for passengers, the Macao and Zhuhai ports jointly use a one-off immigration clearance model, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} allows travelers to queue up only once to finish both exit and entry procedures of the two cities in about 30 {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (second).
