My friend Alan did not have a rich family. He did not have much money. Sometimes Alan 1 had to accept money and gifts from his family and friends. But do not get me 2. He was not the kind of person who never 3 the money he should. He was always very 4 with the money he spent.

    A few years ago, he won the lottery (中了彩票) and got a huge 5 of money. He was very excited. It changed his life. The 6thing he did was to buy a very expensive new car. Then he 7 spending money on unnecessary things or the things that he normally would not buy. It seemed that he had money to 8. He had more money than he needed and it was burning a hole in his pocket. He wasted his money 9.

    When we got together for a  10 at a restaurant, he would always pay the bill.  He 11 me the money made him feel very happy.

    But, Alan soon 12 out all of his money. He was as poor as a church mouse again. His last dollar was spent and he had no money   13.

    I admit (承认) I do feel  14 for my friend. He had enough money to live like a king. 15, he is back to living a hard life. He was wise about small things, but not about important things.

    I will always remember my first day at the University of Lagos. On arrival at the campus, I was expecting to be met by some tired students(as was practiced in my secondary school), 1 every student around was new like myself. I asked the way to the multi-purpose hall but no one could tell me. I asked a number of questions about issues(担心的事）that 2 me, such as where and how to pay my fees, the way to the dining hall and so on, but no 3 was offered. “So in the midst of so many people I am all 4 ” I thought to myself. The prospect(前景) was not 5 at all and all the pleasure I had felt at 6 into a famous university at seventeen began to disappear.

    Then as if 7 by an unknown force, I walked a little bit down the corridor in the direction of a notice board which some boys and girls were 8at. Because of 9of something to do, I decided to stop and look at the notice board. Yes! I happened on the 10to all riddles that had 11 me since I set foot on the campus that morning. On the board there was a big campus 12, on which I was able to 13 the multi-purpose hall and all the other places. There were 14 details of various activities for freshmen and a comprehensive list of those offered admission into various courses.

    How enjoyable it was to see the light of knowledge, having been wandering（徘徊） in the darkness of 15. Even then I was not able to 16 the thought that though I could not be sure how much of the responsibility（责任）was mine, the fact that I didn't pay attention to the notice board had 17 caused my initial problems. I learnt from that incident（发生的事） 18 unforgettable that was very useful to me throughout my stay in the university, namely（即, 也就是）the 19 of reading notice board and handbooks if one is to be well 20 about places and events in the university.

    One evening last summer, when I asked my 14- year- old son, Ray，for help with dinner, his response(回答)shocked me. "What's a colander(漏勺)?" he asked. I could only blame 1. In the family, nobody else went into the kitchen except me. But that night, as I2to him that a colander is the thing with holes in it，I wondered what else I hadn't3Ray for.

    As parents，while we focus on our sons' confidence and character，we perhaps don't always consider that we are4raising someone's future roommates，boyfriends，husbands，or fathers5I came up with a plan: I would offer Ray a private home economics course. I was 6to find that he didn't say no. For two hours, three days a week, Ray was all mine.

    I knew that he would rather have been playing basketball with friends than7to mend socks with his mother，but in fact he was learning, and more than just housekeeping. "I appreciate(感激)what you do8a mom," he told me one day. Ray now realizes there's9masculine(男子气概的)about being helpless.

    Now，not only can he make his own dinner, but also he can make a big meal for his family. That's 10I call a man. I'm glad that I prepared so great a present for my future daughter in-law.

    A doctor entered the hospital in a hurry after being called in for an urgent 1. He answered the call as soon as possible, changed his clothes and went directly to the operation block.

    He found the boy's father 2 in the hall waiting for the doctor. On seeing him, the dad shouted, "Why did you take all the 3 to come? Don't you know that my son's life is in danger? Don't you have any sense of responsibility?"

    The doctor smiled and said, "I am sorry, I wasn't in the hospital and I 4 as fast as I could after receiving the call……And now, I wish you'd calm down 5 I can do my work."

    "Calm down? What if your son is in this room right now, would you calm down? If your own son is 6 now, what will you do?" said the father 7.

    The doctor smiled again and replied," I will say what Job said in the Bible 'From dust we came and to dust we return, blessed by the name of God'. 8 cannot extend (延伸) lives. Go and pray for your son. We will do our best by God's grace."

    "Giving advice when we're not concerned is so easy." murmured the father. The operation took some hours 9 the doctor went out happily.

    "Thank goodness! Your son is saved!" And without waiting for the father's reply, he carried on his 10 running. "If you have any question, ask the nurse!"

    "Why is he so 11? He couldn't wait some minutes so that I could ask about my son's 12?" commented the father when seeing the nurse minutes after the doctor left. The nurse answered, 13 coming down her face, "His son died yesterday in a road accident. He was in the funeral (葬礼) when we called him for your son's operation. 14 now that he saved your son's life, he left running to finish his son's funeral."

    Never 15 anyone easily because you never know how their life is and what they're experiencing.
