Advice for High School Students

    As a person who is graduating from high school very soon, I have some suggestions for students in high school or students who are soon going to be high school students.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} I am sure others can benefit from reading them and will not make similar mistakes like me.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Do not value first impression highly. Don't dismiss a person or an idea too early just because you immediately get a bad impression. You will miss many opportunities because of that.

    Although something seems bad at the first impression, it does not mean it is bad all the time. Try to give everything a fair chance.

    Don't try to please everybody. There is no way you can please everybody or get everybody to agree with you.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} It is a huge waste of time.

    Have respect for authority. No matter how much you may dislike them, just remember that teachers and parents care about you and they are only doing their jobs.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Don't argue with them and just obey them.

    Realize a high school is not the real world. The real world isn't a closed environment. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} What is rewarded in high school such as popularity and agreement is different from what is rewarded in the real world. If high school isn't working out for you, you may find yourself better at handling the real world.

A. Do not be too quick to judge.

B. So just learn to say the word “No” a lot.

C. Listen to their advice and consider it carefully.

D. Many of these are based on regrets that I have.

E. Bad habits are hard to break and remain with you for a long time.

F. Don't spend any effort trying to please others who will never like you.

G. It is a free society where people accept responsibility for their actions.

Keep a Basket Handy

    Do you wait until the last minute to pack? Keep a basket in your bedroom, living room, or bath room that you can use to throw in items you need to pack as you come across them. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}Besides, you can just put the contents of the basket into your suitcase if you are in a hurry to leave for the airport.

Buy Wrinkle-free Clothing

    You won't need to worry about carefully packing your items of clothing if they're made from wrinkle-free materials.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} They'll still look fresh and bright when you are in them at your destination.

Keep Old Packing Lists

    Chances are that you end up taking trips that require you to pack similar items. Keep old packing lists from former vacations to the beach, ski resort, and city - that way, you'll always have a list of at least the basics.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}So you don't need to waste your effort to remember where you left your hand-written packing lists.

Schedule a Packing Time

    Time can slip away from you before a trip — you may be caught up at work, at home, or be occupied with other responsibilities of daily life. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}That way, you will not need to do your packing frantically（狂乱地）from the last minute to 1 o'clock on the day you leave.

A. Buy necessary stuff when you arrive.

C. Just roll them up or put them at the bottom of the suitcase.

D. Determine a night well in advance of departure to pack.

    Everyone knows that fish is good for health. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} But it seems that many people don't cook fish at home. Americans eat only about fifteen pounds of fish per person per year, but we eat twice as much fish in restaurants as at home. Buying, storing, and cooking fish isn't difficult{#blank#}2{#/blank#} This text is about how to buy and cook fish in an easy way.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Fresh fish should smell sweet: you should feel that you're standing at the ocean's edge. Any fishy or strong smell means the fish isn't fresh.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} When you have bought a fish and arrive home, you'd better store the fish in the refrigerator if you don't cook it immediately, but fresh fish should be stored in your fridge for only a day or two. Here are some question to ask yourself to determine what is right for your child.

    Of course when you are trying to determine if you can let him or her go online, your child has probably already said, “I'm ready; I can handle it.” But are they? {#blank#}3{#/blank#} How would they handle the material if they ran across it by accident?

    Does your child question other people's actions? Do they easily believe anything that is presented to them? It is an important question to ask to determine if your child is ready to go online alone.

    Have you taught them what the dangers are?

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Have you explained to them that there are people out there that might want to do them harm? It is a dangerous world out there. If you are going to let them wander around in the online world, they need to be prepared for what they might see or run into.

D. Is your child skilled in using a computer?

E. Unfortunately there is a lot of unpleasant material online.

    In the middle of my home country there are very large places. They are hot and dry land called deserts.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Families live a long way from other people. Sometimes they are the only people for thousands of kilometres. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    About 65years ago these people found that using strong radios was a possible way for families living far away to communicate with each other. They decided they could use the radios for school. In this way, children could talk to each other like at school. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    The children each spent about 30minutes a day on the radio. They talked to their teacher about their work and difficulties. The teacher designed some exercises and tasks based on what they learned and posted them to the children. After finishing their work, the children sent it back to their teacher to mark. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} He tried to visit each child twice each year. This was sometimes difficult. The journey was very long and could be dangerous. In addition, the school held camps once a year. The children could all meet each other and shared their learning experience.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} The government provides families with computers so that the children can use the Internet to talk to their teachers and classmates by e-mail now. The teachers enjoy their work very much because they get to know the children and their families very well. It is an interesting way to learn, don't you think?

In the 90s, they want to know your website. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Your website is an electronic meeting place for your family, friends and potentially, millions of people around the world. Best of all, you may not have to spend a cent. The Web is filled with all kinds of free services and all it takes is some time and creativity.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Like the table of contents of a book or magazine, the home page is the front door. Your site can have one or more pages, depending on how you design it.

    While web pages vary greatly in their design and content, most use a traditional magazine layout (版面设计). At the top of the page is a banner (横幅) GRAPHIC. Next comes a greeting and short description of the site. Pictures, text, and links to other websites follow.

    Smaller is better. Since it can take a long time to download large files, keep the file sizes small.

    Have the rights. Don't put any material on your site unless you are sure you can do it legally. Always remember to get the permission from the writer first.

    Now it's time to roll up your sleeves and start building.
