A young whale(鲸鱼) got stuck near the beach today. The whale was small and had been born {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(recent). Some people saw the whale {#blank#}2{#/blank#} trouble. They called the police.

Soon help was on the way. Jenny Smith {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(arrive) first. She is {#blank#}4{#/blank#} scientist who examines whales. Jenny usually looks at every part of an animal {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(see) if it is healthy. A whale is a mammal(哺乳动物). Mammals are warm-blooded animals that have hair and drink {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(they) mother's milk. Jenny checked the whale's heartbeat and breathing. She said the whale seemed normal. There were no {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(sign) of illness.

Next, Jenny checked to see {#blank#}8{#/blank#} hunger was a problem or not. Going a long time without food can be dangerous for a whale. But this whale seemed healthy and full.

The helpers acted fast. They kept the whale wet. The tide slowly came in. The water got{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (deep) than before. Soon the whale could swim again. At last, the whale was rescued! Its life {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(save) by Jenny and the other helpers. If they didn't get the whale back in the water soon, it will die and they couldn't let that happen.

In the morning, my mom took out some apples from the fridge. She{#blank#}1{#/blank#}the good ones from the bad ones. Then she{#blank#}2{#/blank#}each of the good apples into two halves and put them on a plate.

When Tom started talking, he couldn't stop. 

"It was. it was about my sister. She's bigger than me and she always picks on me. And then I broke her MP3 by m{#blank#}1{#/blank#} and she kicked my computer and I hit her with my tennis racket and then my mum saw me and I started r{#blank#}2{#/blank#} I didn't want to stop. I heard them call my name but I didn't look b{#blank#}3{#/blank#}. I was very angry. I didn't want to see them ever again. Never ever. But when I stopped running. I was l{#blank#}4{#/blank#}. I didn't know where I was! "

"And then I walked into the fair …"

"And you found a hole in the wall of the Ghost Train, "Jack said. 

Tom nodded. 

"So did I, "Jack said, smiling.

"And I had a fight with my mum, too! "

Tom tried to smile, but he suddenly looked very s{#blank#}5{#/blank#}.

"Are you cold? "Jack asked. Tom nodded. "Here, "said Jack. He t{#blank#}6{#/blank#} off his jacket and put it over Tom Jack felt really cold now, but he tried not to show it. 

"Do you think your mum and your sister are m {#blank#}7{#/blank#}you? "Jack asked. 

"I don't know, "Tom said.

"Really? "And then Tom l {#blank#}8{#/blank#} down at the floor. Jack though the was going to cry. 

"Well, don't think about it now, Tom. Go to sleep, said Jack

"Thanks, "said Tom

"And don't worry, "said Jack.

Tom gave a little smile and closed his e{#blank#}9{#/blank#}. He didn't wake up until six in the morning. Jack didn't s{#blank#}10{#/blank#} much either. He was busy thinking about his little brother Jim. And he was thinking about his mum and dad. For the first time in his life, he didn't want to be travelling on the road or on the sea or in the air. He wanted to be at home.

In life, do you choose to take the road everyone has taken, or do you choose the path that is best for you? It might be 1 to choose what everyone has done, especially if it seemed to be the right fit for them. But is that what truly 2 for you? 

Recently, on a hiking trip, my partner and I decided to take a popular trail (特定路线) in the 3 direction. This was an old, well-traveled trail that people had been hiking and biking from A to Z for years. For our own 4 , we chose to travel from Z to A. Going backwards made more5 with my plan. The trip would take several days and going backwards made it 6 that I would end the trip closer to the airport for my flight home. 

As my partner and I walked, everyone crossing our path had something to say, "You're going the wrong way. Are you 7 ? Are you returning because you forgot something? Are you crazy? The path crossed a highway somewhere. When it did, even passing cars beeped (发出嘟嘟声) to8 us of the "right" direction. 

Why did people only see one way? Because that's what everyone does? Because that's how it's always been done? We even 9 to talk to a Danish woman who said, "We have a saying in my country: When you go backwards to everyone else, it's because you're avoiding something. "I couldn't 10 it. We were just enjoying connecting with nature, hiking the way that best 11 us. Had we gone the "wrong way"? No. At least, not for us. 

I decided to 12 the path I chose. In the end, we had a (n) 13 experience. Choosing the "wrong" path was 14 for me. When the 15 in your heart tells you something is right (or wrong) , listen to it. It's speaking to you for a reason and it knows, better than anyone, what's best for you. 

 It is possible that in 50 years the only tigers in the world will be in zoos. One hundred years ago, there were maybe 100,000 tigers in the world. Today scientists are not sure how many are left, as it is difficult to count them. There are maybe only between 5,000 and 7,000 tigers in the world.

 People only find tigers in Asia and Africa. They have already disappeared from many countries. There are no longer any Caspian tigers. They died out many years ago. The living condition of tigers in other parts of Asia is also serious. There are perhaps only 100 Chinese tigers left. In southwestern Russia, the number of tigers is a little higher. There are about 450 tigers left. On some islands in Sumatra(苏门答腊) with many thick forests, there are about 500 tigers. If this situation continues, they might disappear completely.

 Why are there fewer and fewer tigers? The first reason is that tigers are meat-eaters. They need a lot of land to find enough food. Also they live in forests and people cut down many trees. Many years ago, tiger shooting was a sport, especially in India. Local people sometimes kill tigers because they kill their cows. Another reason is that Chinese people use all parts of the dead tigers for traditional Chinese medicine, including the bones(骨头) and so on. People think this medicine will make them live longer.

Yumiko is a very unhealthy person. She is overweight and she never exercises. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(recent), her doctor told her that she needs to stop eating junk food or she {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(have) a heart attack. The problem is that Yumiko loves sweet food {#blank#}3{#/blank#} she wants to eat it all day! She promised {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(eat) healthily, but she always ends {#blank#}5{#/blank#} eating pastries(甜点) or candy. The other day she didn't want to eat some donuts(甜甜圈) that our sister Mina {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(forget) to take home, but she didn't resist (忍住) and chose to eat all of them. A few {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(hour) later, she regretted eating the whole box of donuts. I told Yumiko to try eating sugar free food, she promised to do it, but I believe she will go on doing {#blank#}8{#/blank#} same, eating candy. I don't mean to be pessimistic (悲观), but I know {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(she) very well. After all, she is my sister. I remember seeing her eating a whole cake when we were little. I hope to see her eating {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (well) and that she realizes how much we love her. I also hope that she starts doing something about this situation.
