A. The reasons for getting hiccups B. An invention C. Three awards D. Making hiccups go away E. The hiccup is a common problem |
Have you ever hiccupped(打嗝)in a quiet room full of people? Have you ever hiccupped so hard that you had to stop what you were doing? The hiccup is a problem that almost everyone has experienced.
People get hiccups for some reasons. Hiccups might result from eating or drinking too much or too quickly. A sudden change in the stomach's temperature, such as drinking hot water immediately after drinking cold water, may also cause hiccups. They may even happen because of being excited or being under a lot of stress.
Ideas on how to stop hiccups have been created, shared, and tried for years. However, what works for one person may not work for everyone. Perhaps the most common method people use is to hold their breath for a few seconds. If this doesn't work, you can try swallowing(吞下)hard while holding your breath. There are also some strange-sounding ways, like drinking a lot of water.
A young girl named Mallory Kievman couldn't make her hiccups go away. She knew that sweet and sour things were commonly used to cure hiccups, and she knew that swallowing hard could also help. She decided to use the two ideas to make a special lollipop(棒棒糖). After she failed many times, Mallory invented a lollipop that worked by putting water, sugar and vinegar (醋)together.
Mallory wanted to find out whether her lollipops would help others. She gave her lollipops to friends. Most of them were cured of their hiccups after eating the lollipops. Mallory entered a competition with her lollipop and won three awards for her creative idea. She was successful.
It's said that eyes are the windows of our soul. Beautiful and bright eyes not only show a good health but also make you look attractive. However, to have healthy eyes, you have to look after them properly. Your eyes need everyday attention.
Pay more attention to your diet. First, eat food that is good for your eyes. They are fresh fruits and vegetables as well as fish, eggs and milk. Besides, a regular amount (数量) of Vitamins A and B2 should also be taken.
A regular and sound sleep is a must. It relaxes the eye muscles (肌肉) and gives them the rest. Sleep not only helps the body to repair its tired tissues (组织). Usually, you must sleep for at least seven to eight hours every day. Loss of sleep can give you dark circles under the eyes.
You must exercise your eyes every day. Blink (眨眼) your eyes at regular periods, which makes the eyeballs watery and gives them a good wash.
We use our eyes in many unnoticeable and wrong ways. For example, if a small thing goes into our eye, we start rubbing (揉) it, which is wrong. Rubbing can cause damage to your eyes. Don't read or write in poor or bright sunlight. Always use sunglasses as sunlight can cause eye tiredness. Light should not shine directly in your eyes. Too much reading, writing, watching TV or working on the computer can also cause eye tiredness.

Recently, the relationship between the two countries got worse because of the Diaoyu Islands.
The Japanese government signed a contract(合同) on Sep 11 with the Kurihara family. It was to pay the so-called “private(私人的) owner” 2.05 billion yen (166 million yuan) to “buy” part of China's Diaoyu Islands.
Anti-Japan(反日) feeling grew strongly among Chinese people. Many people walked into the streets and shouted out “Diaoyu Islands are China's.” Some have decided not to buy Japanese products any more. “I am boycotting(抵制) Japanese goods as a show of support. I'll work hard to make the country much stronger,” Liu Xiushan, 33, a lawyer in Beijing said to China Daily.
However, some didn't show their anger in the right way. They broke cars and stores of Japanese brands. Some used rude words. These actions are bad for our position and image. Some actions were against law.
Li Jingjun, a 17-year-old high school student in Guangzhou, was shocked by what he learned from TV and the Internet. He joined protects(抗议) in his city on September 15. But he acted differently. He called for rational (理智的) actions.
“We have every right to say the Diaoyu Islands belong to us, but we should watch our behaviour. Bad manners can harm our dignity(尊严) and sense of justice(正义感)” ,said Li Jingjun.

With the Chinese language becoming more and more popular, the UK government planned to help more kids learn Chinese, Do you think it is necessary for British pupils to learn Chinese? Three people from different countries have given their opinions.
Robert (Canada)
I studied French for 2 years in high school and German for 4 years in college. I studied Chinese for about 4 months before moving to China. Since I speak Chinese every day, my writing, reading and listening are quite good. I think learning other languages is a great thing. It offers a new and different way of living and looking at our life and the world around us.
Ted (the UK)
Learning any language can be valuable, but it is not suitable for everyone. Chinese is a difficult language to learn, and the UK is not good at teaching foreign languages. However, China is a very large and developing market for business people. For them, Chinese is worth learning.
Larry (the USA)
I don't think Chinese will be as widely spoken throughout the world as English. It is too time-consuming ( 费时的) to learn as a second language. To learn Chinese, you have to devote yourself to learning how to write and read it. It's too difficult to learn Chinese. But some day Chinese will become more popular, and that is a good thing.
Different people have different opinions. As for me, being able to speak more than just your native language is a great thing.

Have you ever been to Singapore? For many Chinese tourists, this small island in Southeast Asia is a wonderful place to take a holiday. On the one hand, more than seventy-five percent of population are of Chinese descent, so you can simply speak Mandarin most of the time. On the other hand, Singapore is an English-speaking country.
When the ancient Chinese paid their first visit here in the early 14th century, it was still a small seaside city. Later in the 1820s, the British Empire claimed it as a colony (殖民地). Singapore hasn't been an independent country until 1965. From then on, it has become an important port of trade and business between different countries.
One great thing about Singapore is that the temperature is almost the same all year round. It seldom drops below 20℃. It's warm and wet the whole year. This is because it is so close to the equator (赤道). So you can choose to go whenever you like—spring, summer, autumn or winter! And, of course, it's not too far from China. For those who enjoy the sun and the beach, Singapore is an ideal place.
On the northeast coast of Singapore, Changi Village is far from the noise of central Singapore. The buildings are modern, but there's still a village terminal (晚期的) atmosphere. There's a small, attractive seaside camp site across the Changi Creek from the bus terminal, where you can watch the planes gliding into Changi airport while relaxing on the sand.
Most large cities have zoos, but have you ever been to a zoo at night? Singapore has a night zoo called the "Night Safari". It might seem strange to go to a zoo when it's dark. But if you've ever been to a zoo during the daytime, you might understand why Night Safari is so special. A lot of animals only wake up when it goes dark at night, so this is the best time to watch them. At the Night Safari, you can watch these animals in more natural environment than a normal zoo.
