72 hours in Beijing

Traveling to China is no longer a luxury for many foreign passport holders. The Chinese government has permitted a 72-hour visa-free policy that offers access to visitors from 53 countries including the US, France and Austria. Let's start with the capital of China, Beijing Here's a pick of the best in Beijing!

    Mutianyu Great Wall

Your trip to Beijing isn't really complete without seeing one of the "New Seven Wonders of the World", the Great Wall of China. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is by far the most well-preserved of all. Taking a one hour bus ride, Mutianyu would be your ideal location for a half-day of hiking away from the large crowds in the city. Also, the authorities have allowed tourists to paint graffiti on a specific section of the Great Wall since 2014. The Great Wall was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.

    798 Art Zone

This would be on the top of my list! Named after the 798 factory that was built in the 1950s, the art zone is home to various galleries, design studios, art exhibition spaces, fashionable shops and bars. You could easily spend half your day wandering around the complex, feeling the contrast of the present and the past.

    Summer Palace

Located in northwestern Beijing, the Summer Palace is by far the city's most well-preserved royal park. With its huge lake and hilltop views, the palace offers you a pastoral escape into the landscape of traditional Chinese paintings. The Summer Palace was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998.

    Sichuan Provincial Restaurant

While in Beijing, apart from trying the city's best-known Peking duck, the Sichuan provincial restaurant is one of places where you can enjoy regional delicious food. It offers one of China's eight great cuisines, Sichuan, which ranges from Mapo tofu to spicy chicken.

From his own version of Kim Kardashian's "Internet-breaking" picture to rocking the "Leia Buns"look,Mark Udovitch,28,hopes his celebrity impersonations (名人模仿) will help raise money for cancer patients.

Dressed in a garbage bag, black cleaning gloves and a plastic bag tie,the recreation (娱乐) of Kim Kardashion's picture is one of Mark's favorite celebrity impersonations.

Game of Throne characters are also a popular choice, and the radiation doctor has cosplayed (角色扮演) many famous figures.Mark says the reaction to the pictures has been positive, with a lot of laugh from his co-workers."I have gotten a very positive response from many other radiation doctors, who privately message me,saying how much respect they have for me,"he said.

But while the radiation doctor is having fun with his wild and strange creations, the cause behind it is sad.A patient once told him she was more devastated about losing her hair than surgery. It was at that moment that Mark decided to stop getting haircuts and start growing his hair. The radiation doctor will shave his hair off in a "Dry July Shave Off" and donate it to make false hair for cancer patients.

Mark recalled,"Over the course of 2.5 years,my mates have been absolutely belting me with comments about who I look like with my long hair.I took a photo of me impersonating Scott Stapp, the lead singer of Creed,as a joke last year and posted it on Facebook. It got 150+ likes, which is large for me since I am not very social media savvy(懂行的).Since that image got so much notice that I wonder how many celebrities I could actually impersonate in the lead.Shaving my head may be used as a means of raising awareness."

English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world's books and three quarters of international mail are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words.

However, let's face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探讨它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.

And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce, and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn't the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings. That's why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it.

On Wednesday, January 13th, I performed on stage for the first time. As someone who takes part in so many activities, it's extremely difficult to find the time to be a part of any production. For me, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to try acting through the Senior Play Project.

Auditions (试镜)came first. They weren't particularly difficult, more to see who may be a better fit tor certain roles. We were told our roles in the various plays, and started to work immediately.

I was unsure of how I was as an actor, and I had to learn a lot fast: actions, my place in the story, my reactions, and countless other small details... As I began to improve as an actor, I was able to understand my characters better.

My first character is a man named Roger who is a senior advisor to a presidential candidate in a play called "The Spot." He's a short-tempered guy who says what he wants and takes what he wants to assist his candidate in today's tough political races. He's on the set of The Spot, an advertisement for the candidate, to make sure everything runs smoothly and that any problems are dealt with quickly and efficiently.

While I had really interesting characters, and the plays were funny and such a great experience to act in, I really love the Senior Play Project for the people. I worked with 12 other seniors who not only loved what they were doing, but offered help and advice throughout my entire learning process.

Between the lights, sounds, costume and makeup, and plenty more, theatre is a team sport just like basketball or baseball. There are no small parts; there is no one who isn't needed. I've learned to appreciate live theatre, and the effort that every person in the show, both onstage and offstage, puts into it.
