One day, you open the fridge and find some moldy (发霉的)food. But before you can throw it away, your mother stops you. She doesn't want to waste food. She cuts off the moldy part and eats the rest. Is it safe to do this?

Mold (霉菌)can grow on almost all kinds of food. Mold is usually green, white, black or grey. Mold makes food soft and changes its color. Moldy food tastes quite bad一一and it's not safe to eat.

If you find mold in soft food, just throw it away. Soft food, such as bread, tomatoes or hot dogs, usually contains water. This allows mold to easily grow below its surface. Bacteria (细菌)can also grow along with it.

But it's easy to remove mold from hard food. The mold can't grow very deeply inside this kind of food. According to the BBC, you should cut about 2.5 cm around and below the mold to remove it. It's OK to cut the moldy parts out of hard food and eat the rest. But if the food is completely covered with mold, you should still throw it away.

Most kinds of mold are bad for us. But some kinds of mold can be used to make food. For example, penicillium (青霉菌)can be used to make many types of cheeses, such as blue cheese. These cheeses are safe to eat--and they're quite delicious as well.

(1)、Mold can only grow on some special food.
(2)、Mold makes food soft and changes its color.
(3)、If you find mold in soft food, just cut off the moldy part and eat the rest.
(4)、The mold can't grow very deeply inside hard food.
(5)、From the passage we know that not all kinds of mold are bad for us.

The temperature has dropped to 30 degrees below zero. But that doesn't stop the fishermen of Songyuan City in Jilin Province. Each morning, they get up early and rush to Chagan Lake with a group of horses. The fishermen use the horses to help pull fishing nets out of the frozen (结冰的) lake.

For centuries, those living around Chagan Lake have kept alive the tradition of ice fishing. They dig holes through the thick ice and use a huge net to catch winter fish in the freezing water. This special method has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产).

Every year in December, there is a winter fishing festival, which marks the beginning of the winter fishing season. Over 20 activities are held during the festival, such as winter sports competitions, nature watching, and the selling of the first-caught fish.

None of the tourists at this year's festival would ever imagine that Chagan Lake used to be only tens of square kilometers in size. In the past, there was little rainfall and the lake grew smaller over time. Also, overfishing is one of the main reasons.

To bring Chagan Lake's beauty back, the government used a lot of different methods. They brought in water from the Songhua River, grew more plants, and kept the water clean. The lake now covers about 500 square kilometers, and fish numbers have returned to a normal level. Now, an increasing number of tourists flock to the lake each year to experience the ancient ice-fishing tradition.

The special event of ice fishing at Chagan Lake is sure to continue into the future. It's a hit with tourists, and the locals say that the life of Chagan Lake will only get better and better.

①Cutting down fatty food or exercising more are the most popular ways to lose weight,but have you ever thought about whether our noses play a part in our weight?

②According to a recent study,not being able to smell our food before eating it may cause us to lose weight.

③A team of scientists at the University of California Berkeley,US,came to their conclusion(结论)after studying the result of smell and diet(饮食)on a group of mice.Henry,the lead of the study,said he first believed that mice with no sense of smell didn't feel like eating as much food as the normal mice and end up eating less and became thinner. However,it was discovered that if the mice were unable to smell their food,they didn't put on weight.

④To reach this conclusion,they did an experiment(实验). The first group of the mice was in normal condition. But in the second group,they broke some smelling neuron(神经元)of several mice by using virus(病毒),so their ability to smell was "switched off(关掉)". Both of the two groups were fed the same amounts(数量)of fatty food. At the end of the experiment,those with their smelling ability switched off had not put on weight,while the first group had put on the pounds. The researches also showed that "supersmellers" mice put on the most weight.

⑤That is to say,even if the mice were given the same amount of food,the ones with smelling problems put on less weight. In fact,"Sensory systems(感官系统)play a role in metabolism(新陈代谢). Weight gain(增加)isn't only about the calories(卡路里)taken in;it also has something to do with how those calories are perceived(识别)." Henry told the news.

⑥If it is true in humans,perhaps we can actually make a kind of medicine that doesn't change the smell of people but still stops that metabolic circuitry(线路). That will be amazing.In the future,the findings could play a role in solving health problems such as overweight.In the meantime,however,getting plenty of physical exercise and eating the right foods are still important ways to keep our bodies in shape.

Good sleep is really important to our health. But global heating is leading to increases in night-time temperatures that are happening faster than they are during the day. This makes it harder for us to get quality sleep. As global temperature increases, the average global citizen is already losing 44 hours of sleep every year, a recent study revealed.

The study used sleep and outdoor weather data collected from 2017 to 2022. It found that higher temperatures reduced sleep by putting off its onset. People's bodies need to cool every night as they fall asleep, but this is harder to do when it is warmer.

"Some groups, however, will be affected much more than others. " said Kelton Minor,  a researcher from the University of Copenhagen. The sleep loss per degree of warming is about a quarter higher for women than men, twice as high for those over 65 years old, and three times higher for those in less wealthy nations.

"Women usually have higher levels of fat than men, which may make the cooling time longer. Older people are known to sleep less at night and have poorer body temperature regulation(调节). People in poorer nations could lose more sleep, as it's harder for them to get cooling machines. " he explained.

The studies have also shown that rising temperatures hurt health, including increasing the possibilities of heart diseases, mental health problems, accidents and injuries. They have also been found to reduce one' s ability to work and study. Poor sleep has also been shown to have these effects. However, disturbed sleep may be a key reason why researchers are seeing these heat related health problems.

Worryingly, there were no signs of people being able to adapt to hotter nights. The growing numbers of people in many countries around the world are simply not getting enough sleep.
