Miracles(奇迹)come in moments

The scene of this minor miracle 1 in the living room of my house under an old, broken ceiling fan(吊扇)with a little glass angel hanging from its pull string(挂绳).

My youngest son has a severe form of autism(自闭症). 2 he is in his twenties now he still has the mind of a small 3. He speaks only a few words. He is always 4 in his own world. Most of the time he is happy but there are also times when he can be terribly 5. He will cry for no 6 that I can see. He will even hit himself. It always hurts me to see him suffer this way 7 when there is little I can do to help.

This morning was particularly trying for him. He 8 on and off for an hour. Finally he 9. I was still feeling stressed, however, and wearily sat down at my computer to see if I could get a little work done.

As I was turning it 10, though, I heard my son 11 for the first time all day. I turned my head and saw him 12 directly under the glass angel hanging from our ceiling fan. The light from our house lamps seemed to shine and sparkle all around him like a halo(光环). His eyes sparkled too as the little 13 swung gently above his head. He laughed again and 14 at me.

At that moment my heart opened. I could see that the miracle was 15 me that my son was more than his autism. I saw the 16 and light of his spirit and knew he was here for a(n) 17. My eyes watered and I feel 18 for this minor miracle and gentle reminder of his love for all of us.

Miracles are all around us, but we 19 always see them with our eyes. We often have to see them with our 20. Keep your heart open to them then. And let yourself be the miracle you are meant to be!

On that hot August day in 2023, as ash rained down and flames closed in, Jim Rhodes didn't want to be anywhere but Coulterville. "My kid called from Alabama. We first heard ·about the fire from him," Rhodes recalls. "He said, ‘Evacuate(撤离)!'I said, ‘Evacuate? To where?'"

Coulterville is a tiny town located among dry hills where local people raise cattle and other livestock. It has a main street, a park and a museum. It's got a cafe, a grocery shop and a post. And with summer temperatures routinely topping 100 degrees, it has fires—sometimes big fires.

Eventually, this big fire got a name: the Moc Fire, for the tiny town of Moccasin-where it began as a brush fire.

It burnt for 10 days, consuming almost 3,000 acres.

Rhodes woke to find his truck covered in ashand the news was broadcasting evacuation orders. Ranchers(牧场主) across the region were fighting to protect their animals, loading them into the truck or just setting them loose to find safety. Volunteers were readying fairgrounds nearby to shelter animals. Already they were filling up with dogs, cats, chickens, horses, cattle, goats, sheep and rabbits.

As residents and animals were brought out, firefighters poured in. "With them came the biggest bulldozer(挖土机)I've ever seen," says Rhodes. "And they were sent to cut the firebreak that could save the town. We knew that if it made the cut, we'd all have to get out of here."

The situation was clear. The danger was growing. But slowly Rhodes realized that he hadn't come to Coulterville just to leave when the town needed him. He stayed, joining the handful of residents who gathered around the main street where fire officials posted updates. He knew he could help somebody, somehow.

Around midmorning, a farmer he'd never met came by asking for help with animal evacuation. Rhodes's phone was still ringing, but he knew what to do. "I hung up my phone, got in the truck and headed down to his farm," he says.

It was the early 1950s, and I was a member of the A class at Armidale Senior High School in norther New South Wales.

In the second and third years we all did General Maths, and our teacher was Mrs Lindsay-Clare Lindsay. Her arrival at our classroom was always quick, "Good morning everyone!" Then our books would be out, and we would watch her closely.

I've thought a lot about Clare Lindsay over the years. What was her special magic? There are two reasons and I think they're necessary for all excellent teachers. She loved her subject, and she loved us, in a patient and objective way. She had no favorites that I can remember, and she called us all by our first names pleasantly She had a way of teaching that I loved.

"Now we could go down this path couldn't we? We could argue this, and then this, but that doesn't work because of this. No Can Do(NCD)!" She would put a big cross, and write" NCD" against what she had put down. "Right! Why not go down this new path?" And she would show us that this new way worked. It was fun. We, whether the poor students or the skilled, all did well because of her. I've never found maths difficult, and I_put_that_skill_down_to_her

In the fourth and fifth years,we were divided into the science and arts streams(按学生能力划分的班级), and Mrs Lindsay didn't teach us any more. But as the Leaving Certificate exams were coming, one of my friends became nervous about how much maths he didn't know. With great courage, he went to see Mrs Lindsay, and asked if she would help him prepare for his General Maths paper. "Of course!" she said, and did just that, after school, in her own time. He passed. What a good teacher!

Shi Jing, also called the Book of Songs, is the oldest existing {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(collect) of Chinese poetry. A few years ago, when Chinese musician Fang Jinlong read Shi Jing, he was interested in the stories in the poems. Because he couldn't {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(full) understand the ancient Chinese language {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(use) in the poems, he turned to experts to explore the poems.

Then he decided to portray the poems with musical language by inviting composer Ma Jiuyue {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(create) an album. Titled Music and the Book of Songs, the album was released on Jan. 18, {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(feature) 10 original songs composed by Ma. They {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(perform) by Fang and won great popularity.

The 10 songs are based on 10 poems from Shi Jing, including Qiong Yao, which conveys gratitude to people who are eager to help others, and Swallows, which {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(send) farewell messages to friends.

"Young people gave warm feedback about traditional Chinese music {#blank#}8{#/blank#}they had watched my performance. It has inspired me to create more works for them, which helps popularize traditional Chinese music," says Fang.

"The 10 pieces sound {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(enjoy) and easy. For the listeners, it's a fresh way to comprehend poems from Shi Jing," says Ma. "We spent three years working on {#blank#}10{#/blank#}project. There are so many meanings in the poems and we want to display them as deep as possible with music," Ma says. "It's our mutual goal to have traditional Chinese music reach a wider audience."

After building some "standard"cargo bikes, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} ,this time with something very special. I wanted to build an ideal cargo bike combining the stability of a three-wheeler with the possibility to change directions like being on two wheels.
The first step was to do extensive research {#blank#}2{#/blank#} .An incredible source of technical inspiration was the online Tilting Group.Although primarily-concerned with tilting(倾斜) concepts of engine driven constructions,the group is surely the best place to find information about constructing a tilter.
After researching and outlining a few ideas,I grabbed some parts and started with a very simple prototype(雏形).Building such a vehicle needs a high degree of accuracy,which was not the case with my prototype {#blank#}3{#/blank#} .So I made a few more sketches(草图),which led to an improved version of the driving and tilting mechanism.
Then I started building the tricycle.Building the structure was quite straightforward.As usual I took an old bike apart for the back triangle and then added the front part.After adding a cargo basket to the structure, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} .
Now came the hard part:the driving mechanism.I started with the usual design used for two-wheel cargo bikes,but it took me quite some time to figure out how to pass the driving force to both wheels without allowing the whole thing to lock itself in any angle {#blank#}5{#/blank#} , but I'm sure I can use the knowledge I gained one way or another.

A.The project was demanding
B.I decided to get my hands dirty again
C.I fell in love with three-wheeler bikes
D.I put all the parts together for the first time
E.It took me quite some time to understand the ideas behind it
F.The engine driven constructions were always the most difficult to fix
D.The consequence was that the driving mechanism locked itself occasionally
