Street Markets Around the World

    There are many ways of shopping. You can shop by telephone, by post or through your home computer, but for many people, the most exciting way to shop is also the most traditional—at a street market. You can find markets anywhere in the world. Here are four of them:

    There are many "floating markets" in Asia; perhaps the most unusual(非同寻常) is in Thailand(泰国), at a place called Damned Saduak. It's open from six in the morning to the noon every day. People sell fresh fruit from their boats.

    Many Belgians(比利时人) say that the Grand Place is the most beautiful square in the world. It's the home of a colorful flower market. It's open every day except(除了) Monday. On Monday, instead of(替代) flowers, there's a wonderful bird market.

    One of the world's famous markets is in Mexico City(墨西哥城)—the Sonora Market. You can buy toys, birds, herbs(草本) and medicine. There're all kinds of things. It's open every day from early in the morning till late at night.

    In England, on Saturday and Sunday thousands of young people from all over London travel to the Camden Market—it's the place to go for street fashion, CDs and tapes. Many people also go there for fun.

    On June 2, 1886, a German captain threw a message in a bottle into the water while his ship crossed the Indian Ocean. Around 132 years later in January, the bottle was found on the Australian coast{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    The bottle was thrown into the water to track ocean currents (洋流). Between 1864 and 1933, German sailors threw thousands of bottles into the sea.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    But throwing messages in bottles into the ocean is not just for scientists. People send out such messages for many reasons. Some people write information about themselves in the hopes of finding a pen pal{#blank#}3{#/blank#} And still other people just write down some jokes, song lyrics or anything else they think might be fun.

    There are even online messages in bottles. People can send the messages through WeChat or QQ.

    The reasons and ways might be different, but the goal is always the same: to reach out and try to connect with someone{#blank#}4{#/blank#} In 1988, the British band The Police wrote a song called Message in A Bottle that describes this feeling.

    As the song's lyrics say, we are “a hundred billion castaways(被抛弃者) looking for a home”. When will you feel relieved (释然的) ? “A hundred billion bottles washed up on the shore{#blank#}5{#/blank#}

Streaming sites show more documentaries

Streaming sites (流媒体网站) have become the main platform, for producing and broadcasting (播送) documentaries in China, attracting an increasing number of young viewers, according to a recent report.

On Bilibili, for example, a total of over 3,500 documentaries are available ( 可 以获得的) to stream, while nearly 100 of these are original productions (原创的) according to Zhang Shengyan, general manager of the site's copyright cooperation center.

"Watching documentaries has become an important way for young people to understand and research the world," says Zhang, noting a rush in documentary viewers on the site, from 30 million in late 2018 to 90 million this year.

Tencent Video also notes that 75 percent of its users are members of Generation Z (Z 一代:出生于 1996-2012), and the platform is matching their needs busily providing documentaries with greater experience, says Zhou Mo, with the platform's documentary IP content operation center.

Online platforms produce original documentaries and secure (保护) copyright works to offer such films to attract young viewers, according to the report.

"We will go on to support creation in the production and spreading of documentaries, and encourage more creative production forms to attract more viewers, especially the youth," says Gao Jianmin, director of the National Radio and Television Administration.
