It was summertime. Donna walked into the classroom." Good afternoon, everybody!" That was a joke Donna told every day. Usually the class started with only two or three students in the classroom, and then the other students came as the minutes went by.

Donna knew that the students didn't like studying English. The head teacher had told her the reason. The students thought English was confusing.

Donna waited until all the students were sitting in their seats. She smiled and said," Okay, well. Let's get started. Please turn to Page 36. Today we're studying participles as adjectives(分词作形容词). Students often feel confused when they learn about the present and past participles, so we need to practice a lot. Today, we're just going to practice using present participles as adjectives." Donna looked at all the blank faces around the classroom. Then she wrote two sentences on the blackboard.

"The present participle tells us what kind of emotion the subject(主语)is causing. For example, when we say 'grammar is boring', we mean that the subject—grammar — causes an emotion of boredom. If we say, 'The movie is interesting', we are saying that the movie causes an emotion of interest. Any questions so far? Is anyone confused?"

The classroom was quiet. Donna knew it would take some time for everyone to understand what she was talking about. After a while, Donna got a little excited because she saw looks of understanding on some of the students' faces.

Long ago, a wolf called Howler lived in a valley where lots of fruit trees grew. He often tried to climb up the trees to eat the fruit, but couldn't reach. In the valley, an old man named Martin also had a few fruit trees that he looked after very well. But as he was getting older, he noticed that he didn't have the strength to pick the fruit.Martin had the most beautiful fruit trees in the valley, which was why Howler had his eye on them. One day he decided to steal the fruit and started jumping up and down the tree.Martin looked out of the window and realized that the wolf was trying to steal fruit from his beautiful trees. Howler jumped and jumped, but he couldn't reach even the lowest branches of such a big tree.

Seeing this, Martin had a great idea: he offered Howler a ladder to climb up, but in return the wolf would have to give him half of the fruit. Howler accepted the deal and began to collect the fruit. For the whole morning, he went up and down the ladder filling his basket with the fruit.

Howler soon realized that he could eat all the fruit if he didn't give Martin some. He thought up a new and secret plan. Martin, on the other hand, trusted Howler and even began to think they would be friends forever.

But the wolf stole the ladder and went off to other trees in the area for more fruit.Realizing that the ladder was missing, Martin went looking for it. Martin felt very disappointed at the trick and no longer trusted Howler. Though he wasn't angry with the wolf and they became friends again, he never made any more deals with him.

At last, Howler learned that he shouldn't trick people and he should keep promises. He also learned that if he had been honest and not greedy, he would still have been able to enjoy more delicious fruit.

Feb. 17 should have been the start of the spring semester for many middle and primary schools in China. However, to control the spread of the COVID-19, many schools had delayed the start of the semester, following instructions from the Ministry of Education (MOE). But students in China were still studying.

Instead of having classes at school, many students in Beijing and Guangzhou began their first day of online classes on Feb 17. Students in Shanghai started online classes on March 2. "In the morning, I have English class, followed by Chinese and math, " Liu Bo, a Junior 3 student from Beijing, told Xinhua. "I have also learned about epidemic(流行病) prevention. "

According to the MOE, students were mainly taking classes to review previous knowledge rather than taking new classes during the online study period. Online courses were required to include contents about epidemic prevention, psychological health (心理健康) and educational activities (教育活动).

"Online courses are only temporary measures (暂时的措施) taken during the epidemic, so when the new semester begins, schools should not replace(替代) classroom teaching with online classes, " Lu Yugang from the ministry told China Daily.

The ministry also called on schools not to increase their students' schoolwork burden(负担). Schools should not ask students to study online for long periods of time or study things beyond( 超出) their curriculum(课程). Students must have enough time to rest, the ministry added. Also, it stressed that protecting students' eyesight must be a priority(优先).
