My husband had just bought a new washing machine for me. I decided to use it and I washed a lot of things.

Everything worked well, I got ready for school as usual.

When the bell rang and the students came in, I greeted them and told them what we were going to do that day.

When I turned around to write on the blackboard, the class broke out into a roar(大笑声).

They laughed and laughed. They laughed so much, in fact, that I was afraid the headmaster would be in to see all this.

I asked the class to stop, but the more I talked, the more they laughed. I decided to pay no attention to them, and continued to write on the blackboard. When I did this, they roared even more.

Finally, the teacher who had the room next to mine came in to see what all the laughter was about. When he came in, he started laughing, too! "Good heavens," I said," Will someone please tell me what is so funny?" "Oh, God," said the teacher." You have a brown sock stuck to the back of your shirt!"

So that's how I found my husband's missing sock.

Greg Woodburn, a university student, spends a lot of time cleaning sports shoes. Some of them once belonged to him; some belonged to his friends. But soon the shoes will have new owners, poor children in the USA and 20 other countries, thanks to Greg's Share Our Soles(鞋底) (S.O.S) charity.
Greg was a high school running star in a small town in California. He had to stop running for months because his knee was injured. "I started thinking about all the things I got from running, the health, the friendships and the confidence."he says. And I realized there are children who don't even have shoes.
Greg collected his own sports shoes and then called his friends and the town. His aim was to have 100 pairs by Christmas 2006. When the number climbed to more than 500 pairs. Greg know that he could collect sports shoes all year round.
Now he has set up collection boxes in his town. So far, S.O.S has collected and donated more than 3,000 pairs of shoes. And Greg has cleaned almost all of them. “People think of it as duty work,”he says, "but I like doing it, because I feel happy when I'm doing it. It's not work I want to pass on to someone else.”
In just three years, Greg has started three branches(分部) of S.O.S and there are more and more sports shoes.
For many poor children who have received the shoes mean opportunity. Two young boys in southern California used to go to school on alternate days(隔日) because they both shared a pair of shoes. They were too big for one boy and too small for the other. Thanks to S.O.S, each brother received his own pair of shoes. The boys now go to school every day. When they graduate, they say they will help others, just as Greg helped them.

I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment(行李舱架),

and sat down in my seat.Just before take-off,a line of soldiers came down the aisle(过道) and filled all the empty seats.

After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunch (午餐袋)were available for $5.As I reached for my wallet to buy one, I overheard the soldier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch. "No, that seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch.I'll wait till we get to Chicago."His friend agreed.

I looked around at the other soldiers.None were buying lunch.I walked to the back of the plane, and handed the flight attendant(服务人员)a $50 bill. "Take a lunch to all those soldiers."

After we finished eating. I went again to the back of the plane, heading for the restroom. A man stopped me." I saw what you did.I want to be part of it. Here, take this." He handed me $25.

Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Flight Captain coming down the aisle.

When he got to my row, he stopped and said," I want to shake your hand. I was a soldier and I was a military(军队) pilot. Once, someone bought me a lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot."I was embarrassed when applause(掌声) was heard from all of the passengers.

Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs.A man who was seated about six rows in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another $25 in my hand.

We landed in Chicago, I picked up my belongings.Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man who stopped me and put something in my shirt pocket. Another $25.

Upon entering the terminal(航站楼),I saw the soldiers gathering for their trip to their base.

I walked over to them and handed them $75."It will take you some time to reach the base.It will be about time for a sandwich. God Bless You." I said.

These soldiers were giving their all for our country. I could only give them a couple of meals. It seemed so little.
