Thomas Alva Edison is one of the greatest inventors of all times. One of his most famous achievements is the electric light. He tried thousands of times to make a long lasting light bulb (灯泡). Although the light bulb is not his invention, he is the only one to have made such a successful light bulb. Many people remember him for the invention of the electric light. He held a lot of patents (专利权) worldwide. Many of them were approved (批准) in USA.

We can find his inventions in many fields. In fact, many of the advanced inventions were based on his ideas. He invented a phonograph (留声机), a film picture camera, a ticket recorder and so on.

Edison was not a good student at school. But he loved to do new experiments. When he was still a child, he built his first lab to perform his experiments.

An amazing story of Edison's childhood is that he almost made his servant die. Edison used to think that birds ate insects and these insects might make them fly. 举一反三
Amy Chua, well-known as the Tiger Mother, has held the attention of parents all across the US. She told Reader's Digest that she's a little strange about how her book struck so many nerves in the US. The reporter of the magazine is sharing the interview with us.
Reader's Digest: Did you want your book to be controversial (有争议的)?
Amy: I don't think it would have been controversial at all if it wasn't for the Wall Street Journal headline that was called, “Why Chinese Mothers are Superior”.
Reader's Digest: What's your view on your parenting?
Amy: My children grew up with one Western parent. My husband doesn't believe in raising his voice with the kids and we don't spank (打小孩). They were really raised in a half Asian family. My book's message is that we should try to find the balance. I believe that when children are little, you should restrict (限制) their choices. I like the traditional Chinese way. Respect authority (尊重权利) and don't just let them watch TV all the time. I don't think kids under the age of ten can make good choices. But once they start to get older, the lesson I learnt with Lulu (Amy's second daughter) is that you have to start listening to them. You have to start giving them more choices and more freedom. I really think it's important to find a balance.
I like the strict Chinese way of discipline (行为准则) and hard work when children are young. But when they're older, you have to send love to your child, you have to listen to your child and really achieve the balance between creativity, choice and freedom on the one hand, which the west is very good at, and on the other hand, hard work and self discipline, which I think traditional Chinese parenting is very good at.

People often think of the North Pole and the South Pole as similar frozen wastelands. They are both places with very cold temperatures and few people live there. However, the North and South Poles are not much alike as people may imagine.

The North Pole has no land, only thick ice. Temperatures seldom go above 32°F, at which water turns into ice. Most of the time, it stays below zero. In winter temperatures are usually as low as-30 F.

Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. More than 100 years ago, two men, Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on March 8th, 1909. It was really a hard trip for them.

There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic on foot. People who stayed there may face many problems: very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited. Few people can live in such a difficult place.

People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water called "leads". Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.

 阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A B. C和D四个选项中, 选出最佳选.

Every Saturday evening, many people come to an open square in a small town in Xi' an. They want to watch Chen Kun and his friends put on a play. During the play, the audience (观众) can hear them, but they can not see them. That is because they are putting on a shadow puppet play (皮影戏).

Shadow puppets are made of hard leather (皮革). The leather is cut out in the shape of a person, an animal or an object. Each puppet is painted in bright colours and put on a stick. Some puppets have movable arms and legs.

During a shadow puppet play, Chen stands behind a white screen with lights behind it. The audience sit in front of the screen. Chen and his friends hold the puppets very close to the screen so the audience can see the puppets' shadows clearly. Then they move the puppets around and do the voices of the different characters.

Shadow puppet plays are a traditional Chinese art. Now with TV and films, shadow puppet plays are not as popular as before. To encourage more young people to learn the skills of shadow puppet plays, Chen provides training courses for students to teach them how to make shadow puppets.

Chen and his friends often work very hard for little money, but they do not mind. They want to keep this traditional art form alive.
