The winter solstice, or dongzhi, is the 22nd of the 24 solar terms(节气) in the Chinese lunar calendar. It usually happens December 21st, 22nd or 23rd. People in different parts of China have different customs on this day.
Eating dumplings, or jiaozi, is a common custom for many Chinese on the winter solstice, those living in the north. Why do we eat dumplings on this day?
It is said this custom is to remember Zhang Zhongjing, a famous doctor of the Eastern Han Dynasty. He was the person to make them. People called this food "Jiao'er" for its shape at that time.
