    No-garbage(垃圾) lunches. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Environment clubs ask students to bring their lunches in bags that can be used again.Every week they will choose the classes that make the least garbage and report them to the whole school!

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}On the no-car day, nobody comes to school by car-not the students and not the teachers!  Cars give pollution to the air, so remember: Walk, jump, bike or run.Use your legs!  It's not only good for the environment but also lots of fun!

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}Did you know that some toilets could waste twenty to forty cubic meters(立方米)of water an hour? In a year, that would fill a small river！ In environment clubs, students mend those broken toilets themselves.

What is “Walk to School”?

    Now we are working on a program of "Walk to School". We would like as many parents and children as possible to take part, even if in a small way. Children who walk to and from school along with their parents can learn essential (基本的) road safety and life skills.

    You can take part by…

    Walking to and from school with your child every day.

    Walking for one or two days during the week.

    Encouraging others to walk, if you already do.

    Walking is great!

    Walking is great exercise! A walk is good for your body and can keep you fit.

    You won't have to waste time looking for a parking site .

    It's free. You'll save money by not using the car.

    It's pollution free.

    It's a good chance to talk to your children and to meet other parents, too.

    Enjoying walking to school!

    Here are some suggestions to help you and your child enjoy walking to school.

    Plan a safe route together.

    Teach children what a kerb (马路牙子) is and what it means.

    Encourage your child to help you choose the safest places to cross the road.

    Look at and discuss the things you see on your way－especially road signs and what they mean.

    There was a little boy whose name was Peter. He lived in a village close to the sea. The villagers built sea walls to keep sea water from the doors of the houses. But once the sea walls almost put the village in great danger.

    One day Peter was walking on his way back home along the sea wall when it began to rain. All of a sudden, he saw a hole in the wall, from which the sea water was running. Peter shouted for help because he know the hole meant that the sea was making its way through the sea wall, but no answer came. He realized he should do something else as quickly as possible, or the sea water could be pouring over the whole village. He started to rush towards his village. At the same time, the rain became heavier and heavier.

    It was getting dark, but Peter rushed on and on. He felt cold and hungry. In the rainstorm, he fell down over and over again. Many times he thought about giving up, but he fought on. He remembered his father's words, "Lots of strong men have made every effort to build the walls which can keep the village safe from danger. The sea walls are really important."

    Finally when the boy's father saw him, Peter had been black and blue all over. The boy told the villagers what had happened to the sea wall. They repaired it in time. "Thank God! He saved the village, "they praised Peter. All the villagers called him "Peter the Guard" from then on. Peter's parents were really proud of him!

        ①   In some Cultures, the foot of a rabbit is Carried as an amulet(护身符) believed to bring good luck. Belief is held in many parts of the world including Europe, China, Africa and South America.

       ②   Wishing upon a wishbone is an old Custom. It includes two people who would break the wishbone and the one with a Bigger piece makes a wish. The wishbone's shape just likes the letter" Y".

       ③   A In ancient days, old Boots or shoes were said to hold the good spirit and courage of their owners. Therefore, it was a Common Belief that an old Boot was a good luck Charm.

       ④   Clover is actually a type of wild plant with flowers shaped like Cotton balls and usually has three leaves on each stem. In fact, it is very difficult to find a four-leaf Clover.

From the Other Side

Lara and Tara are twins. They look like each other, but they are very different in everything else. For example, hot food is Lara's favorite, and Tara has a sweet choice.

However, this isn't the problem with the twin girls. They always argues that the opposite one was wrong. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}, while Tara thought mornings were fresh and it was difficult to stay up till midnight.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#} To put an end to their fights, their parents decided to create a small drama. They wanted the girls to understand that they were both correct from their own point of view. Their parents covered the girl's eyes with black ribbons (带、条), and brought them to the dining room. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Lara was asked to stand on one side of the board and Tara on the other. They couldn't see the other side of it. When the ribbons were taken away, they were surprised to see a huge board between them.

Now, their father asked Lara, "What's the color of the board?" She replied, "It's black!" {#blank#}4{#/blank#} She replied, "It's white!" The two girls began to argue again. While Lara was confident it was black, Tara was sure it was white. Then, they were asked to exchange (交换) their places. They couldn't believe their eyes. Tara, who insisted (坚持) it was a white board, saw a black one. Similarly, Lara, who argued the board was black, was surprised to see a white one. They understood that each of them was right in her own view. Most of us are like Lara and Tara. We are right most times, but insist that others are wrong!
