In the deserts(沙漠)of North Africa and Saudi Arabia lives the smallest fox with the largest ears. This animal is the fennec fox.

Fennec foxes have ears that are 5 to 6 inches long. That's big for an animal that weighs less than four pounds. Their ears help shed (去除) body heat. And, as you may have guessed, they also provide great hearing.

It's also interesting to think about the hair of fennec foxes. Why would a fox that lives in the desert need a thick, fur coat? Actually, the desert isn't always warm. During the nighttime, a desert can be terribly cold! A fennec fox's fur keeps them warm during those desert nights. They also have long bushy tails that they use as a blanket. And the hair on their feet protects them from the hot sand in the daytime.

Fennec foxes live in small communities of dens (兽穴).They spend most of the day sleeping in their dens, out of the hot sun. Then, when night comes, they come out in search of food. In addition to(除……之外) their great hearing, fennecs also use their great sense of smell and big eyes to track down dinner.

Fennecs eat both meat and plants. They like eating birds, eggs, insects, snails, fruit and leaves best. Fennec fox mothers have one to five babies at a time. Sometimes they are in danger. They have to be careful with predators (捕食性动物), such as caracals (a type of wild cat) , jackals, eagle owls, hyenas and humans. Humans catch them for their fur and to sell as pets.

language changes with the development of society. So does English. English words change all the time. People need new words for new ideas and new inventions. Different words come into use and older words are used in a new way. Here are some common ways.

English can change by borrowing words from other languages. The word "tomato" was borrowed from Mexico, and “tea” came from China and so on. Now new words are formed by joining two words together. "weekend" and "cookbook" are made up of two parts. A latest one "brunch" comes from breakfast and lunch. Do you have brunch every day? Sometimes new words are shorter forms of older words. For example, the word "photo" was made from "photograph" by cutting off the end of the longer word. "Plane" and "phone" were made by cutting off the front part of "aeroplane" and "telephone". The names of people and products can also become new words. Our "sandwich" was named after a man called Sandwich who invented it and "cello" was a name given by the company that first made the product.

Can you find more examples for each of these ways to make new words?

One afternoon, in Paris, Kate visited an art museum. She enjoyed seeing some great paintings in a quiet place like that. But a young man and his wife talked all the time. Kate watched them because of the noise and decided to go away.

Kate met them many times when she walked through the museum. Every time Kate heard their noise, she left quickly.

Kate was buying cards at the gate of the museum when those two people got there, too.

“He's a brave man,” said the shopkeeper. “Most of us would give up if we were blind (失明), but he and his wife come when there's a new art show anytime.” “But how does the man enjoy the paintings?” Kate felt very sorry and asked.

“His wife tells him about every painting.”

At that moment Kate knew what patience (耐心) and bravery are. Kate saw patience from the wife and bravery from the man. He would not let blindness change his love on art.
