Joe，75，lived very happily and had a beautiful family．He had four grandchildren，and they all visited him in their holidays.

    But while he was working，he lost his favorite watch．Before they came to visit，Joe was getting ready for his home for the kids：cleaning the house, buying their favorite foods and cooking delicious food..．

    The watch was a gift from his deceased(已故的)wife when their first child was born．Joe loved the watch very much．He was very unhappy．

    When his grandchildren came，they promised him they would find the watch．

    One granddaughter asked：“Grandpa，do you remember when you lost your watch?

    Joe answered：“I guess when l cleaned the barn!”

    The children looked for more than two hours but could not find it．

    One grandson went to search(搜寻) the barn again，and Joe asked why he was going there．The little boy asked the others not to follow him and to keep silent(安静的)．

    He was there for about 15 minutes and then ran to his grandfather．He found the watch!

    Joe was surprised and asked how he was able to find it．The little boy said：“I sat there without making a noise，and the barn was so silent．After a few minutes，I heard the ‘tick，tick' sound and found the watch．”

    Joe hugged him and thanked the little boy．

    This shows the power(力量)of silence．If we stay calm（冷静的），we are better able to find a solution(解决方法)!

    The Lee Family was asleep in bed when the smoke alarm outside their bedroom went off. Mr. Lee knew something was wrong. He ran downstairs and was surprised to see that the kitchen was full of smoke. Firstly, he closed the kitchen door to keep the other members of the family were safe. They each took a coat quickly from the living room, came downstairs and ran outside. Ala, their pet dog, followed closely behind. They chose a safe place in the yard. Mr. Lee told his son, "Never go back inside!"

    Their neighbour Mr. Bell, who lived opposite, said he had already called the emergency services. He had come downstairs for a drink of water and had seen the fire through his kitchen window. The fire engine arrived shortly afterwards, and the firefighters soon had everything under control.

    Mrs Lee was crying, so Mr. Lee put his arm round her and said, "Don't worry. Our insurance company will pay for all the damage. "Mrs Lee said, "That is not why I am crying. I think the fire was caused by my carelessness. When I boiled the milk for our bedtime drink, I may have forgotten to turn off the gas ring. Something must have fallen onto it and caught fire.

    When Jim was young, he liked watches very much. When he was 18 years old, he joined the army, and after a year, he began to teach himself to mend watches. A lot of his friends brought him their watches with problems and asked for mending. Jim was always glad to help.

    Jim's captain(土校) heard about this, and one day he brought Jim a watch and said, "My watch doesn't work, can you mend it for me?" "Yes, sir. I can. " Jim answered. A few days later, he brought the watch back to the captain. "How much shall I pay?" the captain asked. "Nothing, sir." Jim said. He took out a small box and gave it to the captain and said, "In the box are three wheels from your watch, I couldn't find any places for them when I put everything back."

    The other day, I got into a car accident, which was clearly not my fault. The other driver was so busy on his phone that he went right through a red light and hit my car.

    A traffic policeman arrived and started taking statements. I explained that my speed was about 55 km/h. "So you were going about 50 km/h, my lady?" he asked. "No, I said I was going about 55 km,/h," I said. "Right, so you were driving at a speed of about 50 km/h?" he asked again.

    I was a little annoyed because I felt he wasn't listening to me carefully. So I shouted, "No! I was going about 55 km/h."

    "OK, if that's the way you want it," the officer simply replied. Because the city speed limit is 50 km/h, I only got paid from my insurance (保险) company for the damage to my car, but the other driver's insurance company couldn't pay me due to my speed. I didn't realize it at the time, but it turned out I was getting him wrong.

    Bob was only seven years old. One night Bob was at home alone while his parents were out for a party. He had often stayed alone before, so he wasn't afraid. As he waited for his parents to return home, he watched a film on TV. His eyes became heavier and heavier as time passed by.

    Suddenly Bob's eyes opened wide- what was the sound in the next room? Bob heard the window being opened slowly. For a minute, Bob was so frightened that he could not move, and his body felt like ice. He knew that he couldn't lose his head and began to think of the things he could do.

    Again he heard the sound of someone trying to climb into his home through the window.

    Bob's drums were standing in the corner near the TV. "Wait, maybe there is something I can do," thought Bob. He beat his drums as hard as he could. The sound was so terrible that Bob surprised even himself. He also surprised the man in the window, who ran away as fast as possible. How clever he was!

    Peter lives in a small house. He is a clerk(职员)in a bank(银行).

Peter gets up at 6:30 every morning. He has breakfast and watches TV news at 7:00. After breakfast, he goes to work by bus.

    He gets to the bank at 8:25. He gets ready to work. He has too much work to do. He has lunch in a restaurant near the bank. He finishes his work at 4:30. He likes exercise, so he goes home on foot.

    After supper, he sometimes reads newspapers. Sometimes he looks for things on the Internet. He goes to bed early. He is tired after a day's work.
