Want to improve your language skills? Follow the tips.
Embrace authentic language
Go to find what you love—movies, audiobooks, podcasts, or comics. Or travel back in time to your favorite childhood Disney songs. You may find that you even want to sing along with them.Language teachers call these “authentic texts”,which is simply another way to say that this is real, living, breathing language.
Use your devices
Think of the technology you use on a daily basis. How about changing the display language? It might be worth making a mental note of how to change the language back though, just in case.
Build associations with your environment
Your environment is full of vocabulary. Sticky notes are your friends when it comes to labeling every object in your house. Handy tip: Don't just label stuff, build associations with useful vocabulary. For example, don't just write “the light switch” but also “to turn on”,“to turn off”,“bright” and “dark”.Reading these associations regularly will help solidify them in your mind.
Less is more—when you do it regularly
Make it a habit to learn as much as you can every day—and “can” is the operative word here. You've got half an hour? Great. Only 15 minutes today? No problem. It's still better than cramming for a weekend and then doing nothing for a couple of weeks. If you're able to integrate language learning into your day instead of trying to set aside “extra” time for it, the chances of it becoming a habit are much better.
Find someone to talk to, even if it's you
Finding a native speaker to talk to is an absolute must if you want to learn a language. And don't be afraid to chat in the language you're learning: everybody who's ever learned a language has done this at one stage or another. It's perfect for building your confidence, or trying out new words, so it becomes the second nature.
A. What's important is that you learn regularly, and that you find time for it in your daily routine.
B. Waiting at a cafe? Scan the headlines on China Daily, of course, the English version.
C. Try making little sentences with them as you go about your day—talking to yourself can be invaluable.
D. While you're walking the dog, listen to that foreign language podcast.
E. Jingles and songs learned in any language stick in the mind for decades.
F. Your computer, your smart phone, your browser, your apps, your GPS, and of course any games you play.
G. Get someone else who's learning the language, a classmate or colleague.
Travel Light
Getting away for a short time always seems like a great idea—until you have to pack. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}The rule is: pack light. Here are some tips to help you pack.
Make a list. Think of what you need from your head to your toes.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} When you've done this once, it'll be easier next time.
2). Consider buying small-size samples of shampoo, toothpaste, and other items at your local drugstore. You can reuse the plastic containers next time you go away too.
3). Choosing which clothes to bring is probably the hardest packing decision to make. Think once again from head to toe — hat, shirts, jeans, sneakers, etc. Once you've picked out what you want to bring, think carefully. Do you really need that extra pair of jeans? If so, fine.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Don't try to fool yourself. You are the one who will be left holding the bag.
4). Weather is an important factor in your packing. If it's cold, you could wear a jacket, a sweater, a regular shirt, and a T-shirt. Putting them on will keep you warm. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Remember how much easier it will be to carry your bag! As for shoes, you may want to call ahead to see if dress shoes are necessary. If so, one pair will be enough, along with one pair of comfortable shoes. Remember that it is you who have been invited somewhere, not your things. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} So, do it right—pack light.
A. Mixing and matching is a smart and easy way to lighten your load. B. But packing won't be a problem if you remember one simple rule. C. You will have an easier time if you're weighed down. D. But make sure they're really worth the extra weight. E. It's best to bring these things with you. F. And it'll leave more room in your bag. G. Keep the list for future reference. |
