        Culture means any human behavior that is learned in human society. All of the meaningful parts of a culture are passed on to different generations through tradition or social learning. 1 Culture exists in agricultural as well as industrialized societies.

        Culture is necessary for the survival and existence of human beings as human beings. Practically everything humans know, think, value, feel, and do is learned through taking part in a sociocultural system.2 Here is one of the cases of children growing up apart from human society. In the province of Midnapore in India, the director of a children's home was told by local villagers that there were “ghosts” in the forest. Upon looking into the case, the director found that two children, one about eight years old and the other about six years old, appeared to have been living with a pack of wolves in the forest 3 In his diary, the director describes his first view of Kamala (as the older child was named) and Amala (the name given to the younger child):

        Kamal was a terrible-looking being, the head, a big ball of something covering the shoulders.4 Their eyes were bright and sharp, unlike human eyes. They were very fond of raw meat and raw milk. Gradually, as they got stronger, they began going on all fours, and afterwards began to run on all fours, just like squirrels.

        Children learn human language in the same way they learn other kinds of human behavior—by taking part in a cultural community.5

    A. From this viewpoint, all human groups have a culture.

    B. Close at its heels there came another terrible creature exactly like the first, but smaller in size.

    C. Human beings can only develop human abilities by the local people.

    D. This statement is well supported by some well-written cases.

    E. These children were the ghosts described by the local people.

    F. Culture refers only to the high art and classical music of a particular society.

    G. They learn a certain human language as well as certain kinds of human behavior through their membership in a certain cultural community.

          What do the world's most successful people all have in common?

          By examining the work habits of over 150 greatest writers and artists and scientists, the researchers includingStandford Professor Jeffrey Pfeffer found that high achievers like Robert Mosesturn out to be all alike:

    Busy ! Busy!

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#}In a study of general managers in industry, JohnKotter reported that many of them worked 60 to 65 hours per  week—whichtranslates into at least six 10-hour days. The ability and willingness to workdifficult and tiring hours has characterized many powerful figures. Energy andstrength provide many advantages to those seeking to build power.

    Just Say No!

    The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say “no” to almosteverything. And that's what gives them the time to accomplish so much.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} And focus means saying “no” to a lot ofdistractions (分神).

    Know What You Are!

    I gnore your weakness and keep improvingyour strengths. Don't waste time exploring skill areas where you have littlecompetence. Instead, focus on—and build on—your strengths.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Create Good Luck!

          Luck is not magical—there is a science to it. Richard Wiseman studied lucky people for his book Luck Factor, and brokedown what they do right.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} By being more outgoing, open to new ideas,following the feeling that something is true, being optimistic, lucky peoplecreate possibilities.

          Does applying these principles to yourlife actually work? Wiseman created a “luck school” to test the ideas—and itwas a success. In total, 80 percent of people who attended Luck School saidthat their luck had increased. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

        How do actors and actresses memorize hundreds of lines? Memorizing lines takes practice and constant repetition. However, there are a few ways to make the memorization process run smoothly and quickly.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

        For most performers, there is no quicker way of memorizing lines. To learn lines, an actor must recite the play loud over and over again. Most rehearsals(彩排) encourage this by running through the lines or having a "read through". By the time opening night arrives, most actors have spoken their lines hundreds of times.

    Listen to your cast members.

        Sometimes inexperienced actors spend rehearsals looking at fellow performers, waiting patiently to say their next line. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} This will help the actor learn his lines better because the context of the dialogue is absorbed.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

        Because there is often not enough rehearsal time, many performers find ways to listen to the play's dialogue during everyday activities. They use a tape recorder or an MP3 player to listen to the lines from each relevant scene. Some actors prefer to record the lines of all the characters, including their own. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}  Others like recording the lines of fellow cast members, and they leave a blank space so that they can insert their dialogue while listening to the recording.

    Think positively and don't panic.

        Most actors will experience stage fright before the opening night. Actors forget lines now and then. When it happens, however, most of the time the audience never notice. If you forget a line in the middle of your performance, don't freeze. Stay in character. Keep the scene going to the best of your ability. If unfortunately you forget a line once, you will probably never forget that line ever again. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    A. Record your lines.

    B. Practice makes perfect.

    C. Read lines loud and repeat them.

    D. Read lines loud and remember them in a short time.

    E. Sometimes embarrassment is the toughest method of memorization.

    F. Then, they not only listen carefully, but they also speak all of the lines.

    G. Instead, they should be listening carefully, responding in character at all times.

    Test-taking tips

        Do you sweat, check your pencil, and feel butterflies in your stomach as your teacher hands out the test paper? A lot of people feel anxious when it is time to take a test. Here are some tips for taking tests:

        {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. Your memory recall will be much better if you have had enough rest. In a scientific study, people who got enough sleep before taking a math test did better than those who stayed up all night studying.

        Read the test through first. Once you have the test paper in front of you, read over the entire test, checking out how long it is and all the parts that you are expected to complete.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}.If something seems unclear before you start, do not worry: ask the teacher.

        Focus on addressing each question individually. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. Instead, answer the best way you can or skip over the question and come back to it after you have answered other questions.

        Relax. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. Of course you cannot get up and move around in the middle of a test, but you can wiggle your fingers and toes, take four or five deep breaths. As we all know, it can be easy to forget things we know well. During a test, if you forget something and start to get nervous, it suddenly becomes much more difficult to remember.

        Finished already? Although most teachers will let you hand your test paper in early, it is usually a good idea to spend any extra time checking over your work. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. On the other hand, if you have 5 minutes until the bell rings and you are still writing, end up whatever you are working on without panic.

    A. This will allow you to decide how much time you have for each section

    B. Be sure you have studied properly

    C. Get enough sleep the night before the test

    D. As the teacher hands out the test paper, be sure you know what is expected of you

    E. As you take the test, if you do not know an answer, do not worry about it

    F. You can also add details that you may not have thought you'd have time for

    G. If you are so nervous that you blank out, you might need a mini-break

    Top 5 Ways to Build a Wonderful Life

        Live below your means(收入).

        Work towards a dream.

        Even if your life isn't perfect, you can always build towards a goal. If you aren't building towards something, you'll probably stagnating(停滞). {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

        We can't control everything about lives, but working towards a goal lays the basis for future success. No matter what your dream is, get out there and start doing something.

        Reducing class size has traditionally been seen as an important way to improve a student's educational experience. Many often believe that smaller classes would permit teachers to give more personal attention to their students.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}.

        But one recent study suggests there's not much research-based evidence to support this idea. The research was collected by a team from Denmark's Danish Center for Social Science Research.

    The study notes that one of the main problems with reducing class size is that it can have very high costs. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. Financial limitations make it very difficult for many schools to reduce the number of students in the classroom.

        The new study began by examining 127 studies on classroom size. Its goal was to examine the major research studies already completed on the subject. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. In the end, the research centered on 10 main studies with possible sampling (采样)problems.

        The researchers concluded that there's some evidence to suggest that reducing class size may lead to some improvement in a student's reading achievement. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. They found just a 53-percent chance that a randomly selected test score from a student from a small class would be higher than the selected score of a student from a larger class. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. This led the researchers to conclude that there would be no benefit at all to math students in a smaller class size.

    A. But they said the effect is very small

    B. For mathematics achievement, the result was 49 percent

    C. This can theoretically lead to improved academic results for students

    D. Many public opinion studies have shown teachers favor smaller class sizes

    E. The effects of larger class size can stay long after the students complete their education

    F. Increasing class size is one of the most common ways school systems control education spending

    G. They especially centered on those trying to measure if smaller class size led to greater academic success
