My grandfather is a {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(retire) worker. On summer evenings, we often sat together outside the house {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(enjoy) the cool air. It  was the time that he told me lots of his experiences before liberation.

        When my grandfather was fourteen years old, he worked in a coal mine. One day, when he and his two workmates were working in the tunnel, an{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(fortune) thing suddenly happened. A part of the tunnel fell down, and they were shut init. They had no food {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(eat). When they were hungry, they only drank some water there. It was very cold in it. In order to keep warm, they hugged one another. In the darkness, they didn't know whether it was day{#blank#}5{#/blank#}night, they only felt they had stayed there for a very long time. They were too hungry to speak or move, and thought they{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(die). At last, the tunnel{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(dig) through. They weresaved. They had been there for fourteen days! My grandfather said they weren't let out at once. If{#blank#}8{#/blank#}, they would have died. They were kept at the entrance to the tunnel {#blank#}9{#/blank#}it was very dim, and they were fed {#blank#}10{#/blank#} some thin porridge. After a day or two, they had recovered a bit, and they were helped out.

Why Does Rain Smell So Good?

    Do you love the smell of rain? If so, you're not alone.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(actual), some scientists believe that people got their love for the smell of rain from {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(ancestor), who relied on wet weather for their survival.

    But what makes rain smell so nice? There are several smells associated with rainfall that people find pleasing.

    One of these smells {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(call) “petrichor（尘土的味道）.” Petrichor, a term created in 1964 by two Australian scientists studying the smells of {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(rain) weather, comes from some chemical reactions.

    During dry periods some plants produce oils, and when it rains, these oils go into the air. Another reaction occurs when chemicals {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(produce) by some bacteria are sent out. All of these chemicals combine to create the pleasant particular smell when rain hits {#blank#}6{#/blank#} ground.

    Another smell associated with rain is ozone（臭氧）. During a thunderstorm, lightning can split oxygen and another gad and {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(it) in turn can combine into a new substance. This substance reacts with other chemicals to form ozone, {#blank#}8{#/blank#} has a sharp smell.

    When someone says he can smell rain coming, it may be that wind from an {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(approach) storm has carried ozone down from the clouds and {#blank#}10{#/blank#} the man's nose.

    The party began shortly after nine. Mr. Wood, who lived in the flat below, sighed to himself as he heard {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (excite) voices and the noisy music. Luckily, he had brought some work home from the office, with {#blank#}2{#/blank#} he kept himself busy for a couple of hours, thus managing to pay no attention {#blank#}3{#/blank#} the noise overhead. He then turned off {#blank#}7{#/blank#} light and buried his head in the pillow. But even so he could not shut off the noise. Finally, after {#blank#}8{#/blank#} seemed hours, his patience was gone.

    He jumped out of bed, put on some clothing, marched firmly up the stairs, and walked into his neighbor's apartment. The owner of the apartment came across the room and, {#blank#}9{#/blank#} Mr. Wood could say anything, cried, “My dear fellow, come and join us. I know our parties would trouble you. I meant to send you an invitation.” Mr. Wood's anger disappeared then and there. He said, “I'd better go and get changed.” Minutes later, he returned, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (proper) dressed, only to find that the party was nearly over.

    We use flowers as messengers to say something we might have trouble {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (say) directly ourselves. Over time flowers have come to symbolize the most {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (power) human experiences: beauty, love, hope, and rebirth. Sweet flowers alone can say what one {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (fear) expressing. We've listed some of the most famous flowers that have an important meaning. In Mao Zedong's poem Ode to Plum Blossom《咏梅》, the plum blossom was used {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (praise) soldiers who sacrificed their lives for Chinese people. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} great Chinese poet Li Bai from the Tang Dynasty once compared Yang Yuhuan's beautiful face {#blank#}6{#/blank#} blooming peonies (牡丹). Flowering in May, peonies' large petals and strong colors are linked to prosperity (成功) and richness. The orchid (兰花) is well known because {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (it) delicate smell attracts lots of people. Beautiful articles and poems {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (call) “lanzhang” by Chinese people in traditional Chinese culture. Roses, of course, have the most colorful meaning among all the flowers. Red roses mean “I love you.” A red rose, rather than yellow roses, acts as the traditional romantic gift{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (give) to your love on Valentine's Day. Sending yellow roses can be risky, as they represent either friendship {#blank#}10{#/blank#} envy.

    The world's longest sea bridge, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, links Hong Kong and Macau to mainland China. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} took over a decade to construct. A few artificial islands were built in the Pearl River Delta {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (provide) the supports for the bridge. There is {#blank#}3{#/blank#} 6.7-kilometre underwater tunnel in the middle of the bridge, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} allows ships to sail through the Delta. The bridge will {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (great) cut the time it takes to travel from mainland China to Hong Kong and Macau.

    It's believed that up to 29,000 cars {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (cross) the sea link daily around the year 2030. Hong Kong will become a lot more accessible for goods and trade, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (attract) more business, so this bridge is {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (benefit) to its economy. The bridge will be open to people to drive across it. However, car {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (own) will not be able to drive across the bridge unless they have a special permit. Most people will take a shuttle bus. Compared with driving a car, this will be much {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (cheap).
