Earlier this year Rodney Smith Jr. made headlines when he drove eight hours from his home in Huntsville. Alabama, to cut the lawn for an elderly soldier in North Carolina who couldn't find anyone to help him with his yard work.

That wasn't the first time the twenty-nine-year-old Bermuda native had gained such attention. To do his good deeds, Rodney often finds leads for those in need through social media.

Back to one August afternoon in 2015, Rodney Smith Jr. was driving home. That's when Rodney saw an elderly man struggling to mow his lawn. He would take a couple of shaky steps, using the handle to stabilize himself, pause, then slowly push the mower again. Rodney decided to help. Mr. Brown thanked him greatly, and Rodney went home feeling satisfied.

Sitting at his computer to do his homework, Rodney couldn't get Mr. Brown out of his mind. There must be many Mr. Browns out there. He went online and posted that he would mow lawns for free for senior citizens. Messages flooded in.

One day a cancer-battling woman said she wasn't having a good day. Rodney decided to do more than mowing lawns. After he finished mowing, he knocked on her door. "You're going to win this fight, Madam", he said. Then he asked folks to pray for her on social media.

Word of Rodney's mission spread. A grandmother in Ohio said he'd encouraged her 12-year-old grandson to mow lawns. He got a letter from a seven-year-old boy in Kansas. "Mr. Rodney, I would like to be a part of your program, and I'll make you proud," he wrote.

That gave Rodney an idea. In 2017, he decided to establish a programme Raising Men Lawn Care Service to make a national movement for young people. The kids learn the joy of giving back.

Yard work seems like a small, simple thing, but taking care of the lawn means a lot to the people they do it for. "When we mow their yards for free, they can use the money for healthcare and food etc. It means more than you would think," Rodney said.

"What's your name? " My fifteen-ear-old daughter, Jessica, asked a stranger on the street. Her eyes sparkled with 1 and her face wore a broad smile. I wish she could make it because she has a disability with autistic (自闭症的). I stood nearby, waiting 2 for any potential result. 

To be honest, the 3 nature of hers is a result of her disability. Ever since Jessica was real young, she had 4 right up to strangers on the street and 5 a conversation, never expecting to be refused. Children with autism don't relate well to others. As her mum, my thoughts are 6 . On one hand, I tried my best to prevent her from 7 others. On the other hand, I don't want her to be discouraged. Happily, when Jessica talks with someone, it always 8 me that people patiently answer her, although they must sense she's a bit different. 

What about this time? Would this man respond kindly or just 9 her and walk away? A few minutes later, Jessica skipped to me. Obviously, it was a successful 10 . Jessica shared with me the 11 they had talked about, which would certainly 12 my daughter's day. The man just treated her like an ordinary girl, nothing special from others. 

As we continued on our way, I felt a renewed sense full of 13 for the future. Despite my daughter's problem, an equal 14 the kind people gave her created a moment of 15 interaction.

It never occurred to me to think about my future job till I entered high school. In the years before high school, I 1 much on football and music. That was 2 I spent most of my spare time. After I entered high school, my 3 for civil engineering (土木工程) inspired me to make greater efforts. 

I found my way to civil engineering 4 when I read an article about the Los Angeles earthquake in 1994. Its consequence was so awful that I was totally shocked. During the earthquake, many buildings fell down. The disaster led to heavy casualties ( 伤 亡 ). The 5 sent me into thinking about how the building projects could be safer, and how I could get them that way. From then on, I 6 to learn civil engineering. 7 different kinds of buildings is a form of recreation for me. Sitting on my bicycle for hours watching the houses around me has made me feel the 8 to shape our buildings into solid ones. 

To achieve my ambition, I must 9 that I can get high grades in all my subjects. In school, I am truly fond of science and good at math. 10 , my high school years had been challenged. My poor writing skills used to 11 me a lot. Fortunately, I had a strong wish to achieve my dream. It was the desire, which 12 me to keep practicing, that helped me overcome my shortcomings. 

Over the years, I have learned to stick with things that I find right 13 . This character will stay with me till my efforts 14 . That, combined with my longstanding curiosity about 15 our world, is what will make me a great civil engineer someday soon. 

Torrie, 16, and her friend Azarria were driving back home when another car hit them. When Torrie opened her eyes, she 1 their car had been pushed into a tree. There came 2 from the gathering crowd as the car was smoking. Torrie's door wouldn't open, but her window became an escape 3 .

"Everyone ran away, fearing the car was going to 4 . But turning around, I didn't see Azarria. I ran back and saw she was 5 in the back seat. I decided to help her out of the 6 ."

"I didn't know how I made it. I just became stronger at that moment," she says. She 7 a bystander to call 911 and started CPR.

After 30 chest compressions and two rescue breaths, Azarria began to show 8 of life. Just then, the paramedics 9 to rush Azarria to the nearest hospital.

10 for both girls, their Lakewood High School offers a First-Aid Skills class taught by Erika Miller. Torrie had earned her 11 in the class just the day before this accident.

"I was absolutely astonished," Erika says. "In my years of teaching, I never 12 a student would finish the course and in 24 hours have to 13 CPR on her friend."

"I was grateful to Torrie, but I wasn't surprised." Azarria says. "She would have done that for anyone. That's 14 just of her.

"First-aid training should be a(n) 15 in schools," Torrie says. "It can make a difference between life and death."

Some Ohio high school students have become winners in a national contest (竞赛) after inventing a mobile phone app that helps needy families find local food pantries (公益食品仓库).

And someday the teens, who are students at Ross High School in Ross Township, may be selling the app to food pantries and food banks across America.

The app was created as part of a computer science class — coordinated (协调) by Butler Tech career school system at the high school. Three students, Jacob Kahmann, Gunner Nonnamaker and Kyle Inderhees, recently were visited by Congressman Warren Davidson, who praised their work. Davidson lauded the teens for creating "this app to set the standard for efficient food collection and distribution (分发)".

Butler Tech IT Instructor Tom O'Neill said the students' app includes characteristics that help users locate the nearest food pantry and improve food collection processes, and that the national contest provides a real-life learning chance for his students.

The students are continuing to make additions to the app and are working on turning it into a product, said O'Neill, who in recent years has helped many Ross High School teens win national honors for their computer-science-based inventions.

"The teachers and students in the Ross School District continue to amaze me with their future-thinking and creation," said Superintendent Scott Gates. "Our students are not only thinking about careers, they are thinking about problems they want to change, solve or improve. The app that was created will make serving a population in need more efficient."
