Pete: Good book?
Debbie: Yeah, it is, and at the same time it helps you find out more about yourself.
Pete: Oh, one of those. I never read that kind of thing. It's not worth it.
Debbie: No, sometimes they're really good. This questionnaire, for example. It's about your hidden talents (才能).
Pete: Hidden talents? That's ridiculous.
Debbie: Well, Pete. I think it's a shame that you feel that way.
Pete: Well, OK. Let me have a look.
Pete: Sorry, Debbie. It's no good.
Debbie: Why?
Pete: It says, "You're excellent at design and at manual things. " Me! I'm not excellent at all. It just goes to show.
Debbie: What? That school doesn't help you discover your real talent?
Pete: No, that you can't judge (判断) a book by its cover.
Fleming saw many soldiers die from infections (感染) in their wounds as he worked in a hospital during World War I. This made Fleming decide to find a way to help the body fight infections.
In September 1928, Fleming left some glass dishes on a bench in his laboratory for two weeks. When he came back, he noticed something puzzling. Bacteria (细菌) were growing on all the glass dishes except one. On this dish mould (霉菌) had started to grow—the kind found on old bread. The mould seemed to be giving off something that stopped the bacteria from growing. Fleming called it "mould juice". He tried it on other bacteria, and it killed them, too. Fleming became wild with joy and named it penicillin.
Unfortunately, Fleming's boss thought he was wasting his time and it was impossible to kill bacteria at that time. Fleming did a few more experiments with penicillin, and he also wrote about it so other scientists could learn about it. However, because no one seemed interested in his discovery, he forgot about penicillin and started to work on other things.
In 1939, Ernest Chain, a scientist, and his boss, Howard Florey, were looking for medicines that could kill bacteria. They discovered Fleming's notes and decided to test penicillin. In 1940, they gave penicillin to some sick mice, who survived later. But those who didn't get it died. Florey declared: "It looks like a miracle!" By 1943, the final tests on humans were finished successfully and the world had its first antibiotic (抗生素) medicine.
At the beginning of the school year, each student would be given a special job for which they would be responsible (负责任的) for the whole term. Rita, a quiet and hardworking girl, hoped for an exciting task, like taking care of the class plants. Instead, she received a small box with sand and a small ant.
Even though the teacher explained that this task was very special, Rita could not help feeling disappointed. However, she decided to do her best with her new job. She began to study and care for the ant, learning about its habitat (栖息地) and needs. She made the box a comfortable home for the ant, and it grew much bigger than anyone expected.
Rita's efforts caught the attention of her science teacher, Mr. Thompson. He turned her work into a class project, and Rita became the class expert (专家) on ants. Her hard work helped the whole class learn about ant behavior and habitats. They even built a small ant farm in the classroom to observe the ant closely.
Gradually, Rita's classmates became more and more interested in the ant project. They started asking her questions and observing the ant's behavior themselves. Rita organized a presentation where she shared her findings with the whole school during the science fair.
At the end of the year, Rita's class was recognized as the best of the year. Rita was as well praised for her hard work and how she turned a small task into something big. Rita learned that every task, no matter how small, could make a big difference. She also learned that sometimes the most unexpected things can lead to great success.
A friend advises me to say no more often, so I can fix my eyes on what matters most. Personally, I've used his advice to great advantage. I've noticed a few areas where people hesitate (犹豫) to say yes. Here's what I suggest you say YES to:
Say yes to challenge (挑战).
Why add any more challenge to your life than you already have? Although there are a few challenges you might have good reasons to say no to, say yes to the challenges that stretch and grow you. My dad has wisely pointed out that I may do best when in a challenging situation. Challenge can bring out the best in you.
It's true that too much fun can be frivolous (无聊的). However, in some cases, it is also easy to get so focused on our work that we forget to enjoy it and have fun. Sometimes you can have fun, but you can make the situation fun by the attitude and energy you bring to it.
Say yes to opportunity (机会).
Put yourself in the place full of opportunities. Sometimes opportunity finds you, but more often you have to search for it. Communicate with people who are making things happen. And when you do find opportunity, don't pass it by because of laziness.
A. Say yes to fun.
B. Saying no is a skill but so is saying yes.
C. Join groups that challenge and encourage you.
D. It's easy to think you're not able to deal with it.
E. Improving relationships is always something good to say yes to.
There are over fifty different types of plastics. Many of them are used 1 packaging (包装). Most plastics do not break down and a lot of them are not recyclable. When they are 2 , they can pollute the air and make it very dangerous.
One of the most popular plastics used in making bottles is called PET. This can be recycled. Plastics 3 PET need to be labeled so they can be collected easily for recycling. In America, PET is recycled and used to make 4 things, such as flowerpots and milk crates. In Germany some bottles are made from a type of plastic which breaks down in strong 5 or when buried. 6 this is expensive and the bottles might break while they are being need.
Nearly all the things you buy from the supermarket are wrapped in something. 7 fruit and vegetables are wrapped in plastic or in plastic bags. When we use these things, we usually 8 the packaging. Packaging keeps food 9 . It protects the food and also gives us information about the product. But is it all necessary? If you add up all the packaging, it comes to a lot.
Try not to buy things that use a lot of plastic. You'd better 10 your old plastic containers for keeping things.
The Elmore Bank had just put in a new safe and vault (金库). Mr. Adams was very (pride) of it. He gladly explained its workings to everyone. Ralph Spencer listened (polite), but did not seem very interested. The two children, May and Agatha, were very (excite) to see these shining things.
At this time, Ben Price, a policeman from Little Rock, walked inside the bank hall. He told the clerk that he was just waiting for a man he (know).
Suddenly there was a scream (尖叫). May locked Agatha in the vault. The old banker cried, "Oh, the door can't (open). And the clock I hadn't started yet." During the following silence they could just hear the girl wildly (shout) in the dark vault. "Only one man in Little Rock can open this door," said Mr. Adams. "Ralph, the child can't stand it long in there. There isn't enough air, and besides, she (die) of fear. What shall we do?"
Ralph threw off his coat and pulled up his shirt sleeves. With that act Ralph Spencer disappeared and Jimmy Valentine took ( he) place. "Get away from the door, all of you," he said. Then he set his suitcase on the floor and laid out all the tools. In ten minutes, breaking his own burglarious (入室盗窃的) record, he opened the door.
Jimmy put on his coat and walked towards the front door. A big man stood in his way. "Hello, Ben!" said Jimmy, with a strange smile. "Well, let's (go)." And then Ben Price acted rather strangely. "Guess you're mistaken, sir," he said. "I don't think we've met each other before. Your carriage (wait) for you, isn't it?"
In a village near a desert lived a young and successful businessman; named James But he often felt unhappy because of the endless challenges he faced.
One day, a wise old man came to the village with 100 camels. James went to see him and said, "I always have business worries, family troubles and health problems. Please tell me how to make them disappear." The old man smiled and said, "I'll give you an answer tomorrow morning. But first, can you do a small thing for me?" James agreed. The old man asked him to take care of the 100 camels for the night, making sure that they all sat down and rested before he could go to sleep.
The next morning, the old man asked James how his night went. James said sadly, "I didn't sleep at all. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get all the camels to sit together. Even if I managed to get some camels to sit on one side, a few others would stand on the other side."
"That's true. As noticed last night, some camels sat down on their own, while others required some effort, and yet many camels did not sit even after lots of effort. If you had come back later, you would have seen that some of the camels, even though they didn't sit at first, finally sat down on their own," the old man said.
James nodded. The old man continued, "Problems are just like camels—some problems get solved by themselves, some get solved when you put in some effort, and some do not get solved even after you have tried your best. Leave such problems to time. At the right time, these problems themselves will come to an end. "
James felt a sense of understanding. It completely changed the way he saw life's challenges.
