In many countries around the world, more and more people live in cities. Cities share many similar things, but are also different from country to country.

    MEXICO

Mexico s cities are modem but have many traditional Indian and Spanish things. The most important buildings are around a central square, which is also a place to meet with friends. There are outdoor marketplaces, where people can find almost anything they need. On Sundays, parks are popular places for families. Many people move to Mexico City from the countryside. It has a lot of excitements, but also lots of traffic and air pollution.

    JAPAN

Japan s cities also have a mix of traditional and modern things. There are tall office and apartment buildings as well as traditional wooden houses. Many people would like to live near the center of cities, but because houses there are too expensive, they have to take public buses or trains from faraway places. Traffic, pollution, and crowds are problems. However, there is little crime, and even very crowded cities have many parks and gardens.

    AUSTRALIA

Although 80% of Australians live near cities, the cities are not as large as those in some other countries. Most people live in houses in the outer area of the cities—not in apartment. The areas also have their own churches, schools, and shopping centers. In large cities, like Sydney, the areas are often far from the center town. Though many people take public buses and trains to work, traffic is slow and there are many traffic jams.

On the day the tornado hit, there was no sign that the fierce weather was on its way—the sky was blue and the sun had been out. The first warning my husband, Jimmy, 67, and I, 65, got came around 9 p.m. from some text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran upstairs to find me in our third-floor bedroom, and we changed the channel from the national television to our local Pensacola, Florida station.

Soon the tornado was on top us. It was the loudest thing I had ever heard. The house shook, and the power went out. And the wind began to roar (咆哮) through the house, most likely through windows and the door to our garage. Everything was moving. And the back wall of the house came off and flew into darkness outside. We had three flights of steps to get to the storeroom down there, the relative safety of the first floor.

I didn't know how or if we would make it down the steps. It felt as if there was no floor as the wind lifted me off my feet. As we finally reached the last flight of steps, our front door blew open. Suddenly, a three-foot-long tree branch flew over our heads, missing us by inches.

By the time I reached the storeroom, the tornado had been over us for about a minute. Jimmy pushed me down to the storeroom floor, but he couldn't get inside himself because of the wind. I held Jimmy's arm as the tornado blew the door open. My knees were full of glass, but I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out of the house.

All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn't believe it was over. Our neighbors said the storm lasted four minutes. In that time, four of the twelve town houses in our unit were completely destroyed. Luckily, none of us were seriously injured.

    (1) Where did the couple learn about the coming fierce weather?
A . From the dark shy. B . From the text sent by their neighbors. C . From the radio station. D . From the news report on TV.
    (2) Why do the couple try to get to the storeroom?
A . It was safer there. B . They went there to get something. C . They liked to stay in a storeroom. D . They tried to hide from their neighbors.
    (3) What do we know about Jimmy when the author reached the storeroom?
A . He flew out of the house. B . He was in great danger. C . He was seriously injured. D . He got inside the storeroom.
    (4) What is the best title of this text?
A . The Wind Roaring Through the House B . A Couple Stopping a Disaster C . A Couple Keeping Alive from a Disaster D . The Tornado Hitting Florida

I had never really liked reading, and I thought it was a waste of time. But when my teacher told me to go to the library and find a book, I looked for one that I was actually interested in. I love basketball, so I picked out a basketball book which was called Hoops by Walter Dean Myers. It is an amazing story about a high school ball player named Lonnie. He is a great basketball player, and dreams of playing basketball in college someday, and of course in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Lonnie lives in Harlem, NY, and is struggling through poverty and other problems. He doubts his new coach, Carl, and doesn't think that he will be there for his new team. However, he soon realizes what the man has done in his past, and can completely connect with him. Carl soon makes a huge influence on Lonnie, but they face many challenges.

This book makes me think about how hard it would be to grow up in a rough city. I have realized that basketball is a great way to escape the struggles we face.

From this story, you will learn that the people around you really affect who you are, and how important it is to have the support of family and friends in your life. I have learned a lot from this book, and I think that anyone who reads it will too. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

I am now reading more Walter Dean Myers' books. A lot of his books are about growing up in Harlem, just like he once did. He has become my favorite author.

    (1) Hoops is a book about (a) ________.
    A . teacher B . library C . basketball D . coach
    (2) According to the story, Lonnie ________.
A . didn't get help from his friends B . was born into a rich family C . realized his dream of playing in the NBA D . disliked his coach in the beginning
    (3) From this book the author realizes that basketball ________.
A . makes it hard to live in a rough city B . helps people make new friends easily C . provides a good way to escape difficulties D . tightly connects people with their family and friends
    (4) The purpose of the author in writing this text is to ________.
A . tell us his favorite author B . introduce a book to us C . show his interest in reading D . teach us the importance of reading

Do you suppose Darwin, one of the greatest scientists of all time, really did fools' experiments? Or did he do experiments that were so simple and basic that other people just thought they were foolish?

Sometimes, people think they already know the answer to a question or the solution (解决办法) to a problem. Sometimes, they really do know an answer or a solution, but without thinking they are important.

Charles Darwin didn't settle for (满足于) just thinking he knew something. And, he believed all things could be important however simple they seemed to be.

Suppose you drop sheets of paper that are of exactly the same size and shape. If you drop them at the same time in the same place, they will fall in the same way. Now make one of the sheets of paper into a tight (紧的) little ball and let it drop along with the other sheets. What happens? You have done an experiment that is so simple that you might think it couldn't be worth anything.

But this simple experiment is important. It explains part of our present-day understandings of physics and ideas that were worked out long ago by Galileo and Newton. And these understandings set aside some of ancient Greek physics.

A scientist sometimes stops to look at very simple things and to think very hard about them. Even the simplest idea, which we might think is foolish, can shake the foundations of science.

    (1) The passage tells us that Charles Darwin ________.
A . was a great English scientist B . didn't get on well with others C . thought even the simplest thing was important D . always liked doing the experiments that others thought difficult
    (2) The phrase “set aside” in paragraph 5 most probably means "________".
    A . throw away B . put to use C . realize D . store up
    (3) In the scientists' eyes, sometimes the very simple things may ________.
A . tell us everything of our life B . shake the foundations of science C . discover the truth of the nature D . help them finish the experiment
    (4) The author of the passage tries to ________.
A . draw our attention to everyday happenings around us B . draw the conclusion that basic sciences are simple things C . prove that two sheets of paper always fall at the same speed D . prove that only Charles Darwin, Galileo and Newton are the greatest scientists.
