Bruno was a boy of eight. His father worked in a cinema and his mother worked in a shop. He lived not far from his school. He always walked there and walked home. On his way to school, he had to pass a playground. It was very wet after it rained. One day, when he got home, his clothes were all wet. His mother became angry and said, "Don't play in the water on your way home from school!"
On the next day Bruno came home with wet and dirty clothes. His mother became even angrier. "I'll tell your father if you come back wet again," said his mother. "He'll punish(惩罚)you, you know."
The third day the little boy was dry when he came home.
"You're a good boy today", his mother said happily. "You didn't play in the water."
"No," the boy said unhappily. "There were too many older boys in the water when I got there this afternoon. There wasn't any room(空地方)for me at all!"
"Who needs a shopping mall (购物中心)if you have Taobao?" says Wang Lin, 28, a writer in Beijing.
Taobao, China's largest online shopping site (网上购物网站), has become an important part of Wang Lin's life. She spends lots of money on Taobao.
A growing number of Chinese Internet users like Wang have found the joys of online shopping. Most online shoppers are students or young workers. More women shop on line than men. Clothing and home-use products(产品)are the most popular on line.
It was reported that more than 250 billion(十亿) yuan was spent on online shopping last year, 80% through Taobao.
Taobao means "looking for treasure" in Chinese. People can find almost everything they need on Taobao, from clothes to books, from candies to DVD players.
You may question the security of online shopping, Wang Lin said, "It's very safe and convenient (便利的).Unless you receive the products from the sellers and are satisfied with them, the shop owner will not get the money. You can also get your money back if you want to return the products."
After breakfast Mrs. Beckman started packing(打包)the bags. She bought the tickets to London. Her husband works there. She and her children are going to fly there to see him. Thomas and Katy can't help her and she told them to play outside.
"It often rains in London in autumn," the woman said to herself, " I'd better take the umbrellas. So I won't buy any when it rains there."
Suddenly(突然), she heard Thomas crying and ran out at once. She asked, " What's the matter?"
"Katy pulled(揪)my hair," the boy said in tears(眼泪汪汪地).
"Don't be angry," said the woman. "She's too young. She doesn't know pulling hair hurts(疼痛)"
And then she went to the house again. After a short time there was more crying. She had to come out to see what the matter was.
This time Thomas said, "Now she knows."
In America, boys and girls like watching TV. Some children spend six hours a day at school and four to six hours a day in front of the TV sets. Some children even watch TV for eight hours or more on Saturday.
Television is like books and films. A child can learn both good things and bad things from it. Some TV programs help children to understand the news, the people and places in other countries. With TV, children do not have to go to the movies. They can listen to interesting music or watch a game at home. But some programs are bad for children, so parents sometimes should help them to find other interesting and useful things to do.
