People in different countries have different ways of doing things. Something is 1 in one country, but it may be quite impolite in another. In Britain, you mustn't lift your bowl to your mouth when you are 2 some liquid (液体) food. But it's 3 in China. And in Japan you even needn't worry about making 4 while you are having it. It shows that you're enjoying it. But people in Britain think it is bad manners. If you are a visitor in Mongolia (蒙古), what manners do they wish 5 to have? They wish you to have a loud "burp" (打嗝) 6 you finish eating. Burping shows that you like the food.
In Britain, you should try not to 7 your hands on the table when you're having a meal. In Mexico (墨西哥), however, guests are expected to keep their hands on the table during a meal. But in Arab (阿拉伯) countries you must be very careful with your hands. You mustn't eat 8 your left hand. Arabs consider it very 9 manners eating with left hands. So when you are in other countries, watch 10 and follow them. As a saying goes, "Do as the Romans do."
In May 2001, I found a job in New York at the World Trade Center. On September 11, 2001, I arrived at my building at around 8:30 a.m. I was about to go up when I decided to get a coffee first. I went to my favorite coffee place even though it was two blocks east from my office. As I was waiting in line with other office workers, I heard a loud sound. Before I could join the others outside to see what was going on, the first plane had already hit my office building. We stared in disbelief at the black smoke rising above the burning building. I felt lucky to be alive.
A young painter had just completed a beautiful painting. To get people's opinions about his painting skills, he put his painting at a crossing on a busy street and put up a board that read, "Gentlemen, I have painted this piece. Since I'm new, I might have made some mistakes in my work. Please put a cross (叉号) wherever you see a mistake."
When he came back in the evening. he was completely shocked (震惊) to see that the whole painting was filled with crosses. He ran to his master and said to him, "I'm useless. If this is what I have learned to paint, I'm not worth teaching."
The master smiled and said, I'll let you know that you are a great artist. Now go to paint the same painting again and give it to me. "Then they went to the same street the next morning and put the same painting exactly at the same place. Then the master took out another board which read." Gentlemen, I have painted this piece. I might have made some mistakes in my painting. I have put a box with colors and brushes just below. If you see a mistake, pick up the brush and correct it. Two days later, they came back to the place. The young painter was surprised to see that there was not a single correction (修正).
Always remember not to judge yourself by someone else's criticism (批评) because you are the best judge to yourself.
Once there was a clever old woman who lived in the mountains. All the children came and asked her questions. She always gave the right answers.
One day a naughty (淘气的) little boy caught a small bird and held it in his two hands. He said to his friends, "Let's trick (戏弄) the old woman. I'll ask her what's in my hands. Of course, she'll answer that I have a bird. Then I will ask her if the bird is living or dead. If she says the bird is dead, I'll open my hands and let the bird fly away. If she says the bird is alive, I'll quickly crush it and show her the dead bird. Either way, she'll be wrong." The children agreed that this was a clever plan. So they went to the old woman's house.
"Granny, we have a question to ask you," they all said.
"What's in my hands?" asked the little boy.
"Well, it must be a bird," answered the old woman.
"But is it living or dead?" asked the excited boy.
The old woman thought for a moment and then answered, "It is up to you, my child."
Ten years ago, Lu Xiaofang was one of millions of young Chinese women who left their rural homes to find work in cities. Now, the 30-year-old woman has returned to her village in Shangshui County, Henan Province. She has built a business in the village that makes shopping bags. She can live with her family, and it's easy to hire workers there. but the most important reason is that she can help the village women to get rich.
In 2011. she set up the first factory, using the sewing skills she learned while working in Jiangsu Province. She owns nine factories now and hires more than 300 young women from nearby villages.
The bags are sold to supermarkets, such as Wal-mart and Whole Foods. Profit (利润) on a shopping bag is just pennies, but a fast worker can earn 150 yuan a day, nearly 4,000 yuan a month. That's less than the pay in cities, but they enjoy living with their children and parents. That's why they want to work in the factories nearby.
For many years, young people have left the countryside because of poverty(贫穷). Now they are harvesting opportunities at home, attracting many companies to start businesses and build better lives.
"In Shangshui County, more than 110,000 people have found jobs in the ir h ometowns, and 20,000 have been lifted out of poverty in the last few years. But it's far more than making people rich. It allows villagers to stay near their family. There are fewer children and old people left behind in the countryside." said a leader of the county.
