Six years ago, Shilagh Mirgain decided to achieve the goal she'd had on her bucket list (目标清单) for twenty years: to reach the top of Mount Kilimjanjaro. Four years ago, she bought her hiking shoes and started to hike. Two years after that she began to imitate the difficulties of the nine-day hike with a weighted backpack. Last summer, she booked her tour. In February, she climbed to the very top of the mountain.

If it wasn't for her bucket list, Mirgain says she might never have known the pleasure of standing at top of one of the world's most famous mountains. "Bucket lists are helpful in that they are a way of listening to your inner wisdom (智慧)." She say," It's so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day jobs, to-do lists, doing chores and the like—you may not see your inner need."

One study found that participants who wrote down their goals finished more than those who didn't. Other positive psychology research suggests that finishing goals like that is important for a satisfying life.

For Mirgain, who added Kilimanjaro to her list after receiving a postcard sent from the mountain by a group of women she had met who were climbing it, it wasn't so much the act of writing down her bucket list that helped her stick to it, as it was keeping it someplace noticeable. "I keep pictures of my top bucket list things on my fridge," she says, "When I finish something I take that photo down and put it on another board in my home, along with a photo of myself at that place."

Mirgain said excitedly. "It's great to finish your bucket list." she says, "To work toward something you wanted to experience or achieve gives you a confidence and can change your opinion of the world.”

    (1) In order to achieve her goal, Shilagh Mirgain          .
A . toured many places B . had years of preparation C . missed many important things D . spent a lot of money on the things needed for the hiking
    (2) Why should we make a bucket list?
A . It makes our work in order. B . It helps others notice our intelligence. C . It encourages us to follow our heart. D . It can keep us away from daily chores.
    (3) What is especially important for Shilagh Mirgain to stick to her goal?
    A . Joining a group. B . Her unshakable confidence. C . Getting reminded of her goal often. D . Encouragement from like-minded women.
    (4) What is the text mainly about?
A . The life story of a great woman. B . How to have great achievements. C . Why we should listen to our inner wisdom. D . The importance of making a bucket list.

Have you ever had trouble sleeping in a new place?

Lots of people do. And now researchers from Brown University in Rhode Island think they know why. They found that one-half of the brain "remains more awake" than the other half when people are trying to sleep in a new place.

This appears a case of the brain keeping people ready for trouble in a new place, the researchers said.

The sleep findings were reported in Current Biology by Brown University. In their report, the researchers said many people report they have a harder time sleeping the first night at a hotel or other places outside their home. They call it "first-night influence". "In Japan they say, ‘If you change your pillow, you can't sleep,'" said Yuka Sasaki, one of the report's writers, "You don't sleep very well in a new place. We all know about it."

The researchers measured brain waves (测量脑波) for 35 volunteers over two nights in a laboratory. The two nights were a week apart. They found during the first night the left half of the brain was more active than the right half. This was during the first deep-sleep period, the researchers said.

Sasaki said a lot of questions remain.

Researchers did not keep measuring brain waves all night long. So, they don't know if the left half keeps "watch" all night. Or whether it "works in shifts" with the right half later in the night. They also don't know why the brain activity, at least during the first period of deep sleep, is always on the left half.

For some, this research may be calming. It is good to know that our brain is "looking out for us" in a new place. But it may not help with sleep. That brain activity, at least according to this new research, makes it harder to get the sleep people need to wake up well rested in the morning.

    (1) What did the research find during the first deep-sleep period?
A . They found the brain wave remained the same. B . They found the brain activity helped with sleep. C . They found the right half of the brain kept "watch". D . They found the left half of the brain was more active.
    (2) Which of the following is one of the questions that remain?
A . Whether the new bed keeps you from sleeping. B . How you have trouble sleeping in a new place. C . Why the brain activity is always on the left half. D . What people can do when they can't sleep well.
    (3) The underlined word "calming" has the closest meaning to          .
    A . pleasing B . different C . serious D . strange
    (4) What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 7 refer to?
A . The brain wave. B . The brain activity. C . The whole brain. D . The left half of the brain.

In many parts of the world, spring is in full bloom. Flowers of all colors and shapes can be seen everywhere. They make our world look and smell better. So, it is no surprise that people love flowers! Well… except for one —dandelions (蒲公英)!

There is probably no flower more hated or misunderstood than the bright yellow dandelions. In order to have a tidy garden, we try our best to kill all dandelions or dig them out—only to see these unwanted plants grow right back. But that's not bad because we have good reasons to leave them alone.

In fact, the most hated flower on Earth is one of the healthiest to eat. A 2014 study lists dandelions as one of the top 41 healthiest foods. Coming in at number 16, the wild growing "weed" topped popular healthy like broccoli and kale. Dandelions are full of vitamins K, A, E and C. They have long been used as medicine.

Another great thing about dandelions is that you can eat every part of them—from the bottom of the roots to the top of the flower, either cooked or uncooked. You can also put the flowers or roots in hot water to make dandelion tea. Great! Nothing goes to waste!

Besides, dandelions are fun for kids! Pick the white top, close your eyes, make a wish and blow! If you blow all of it in one breath, your wish will come true. This game is played all over the world.

Still unwanted plants? Of course not! Dandelions are good for human health as well as our kitchen. They also offer kids free toys! So next time when you are blowing them, blow harder—you're helping this great plant grow in the wild, even if your own wish does not come true!

四、任务型阅读

  • 13. 下面文章中有五处 (第1—5题) 需要添加首句。请从以下选项 (A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出符合各段意思的首句。选项中有一项是多余选项。

Nowadays, more and more teenagers can't get along well with their parents, some even fight with their parents from time to time. That's too bad. Even if you think that your parents cannot understand you at times, loving your parents is a normal and satisfying part of life. You love them for the fact that they created you and raised you. Here are some ways to love your parents.

You can use these moments to learn from them when you're off on your own. It's OK to be angry, but angry actions don't help you or your parents. Act calmly, cool off, keep a diary about your feelings, or talk to a friend. After this, show your feelings to your parents.

It depends on what you do. For example, if you get home late without calling first, next time your parents may not believe you. To get their trust, you must pay attention to the ways you do things instead of fighting with them. It will make your life much easier.

You can watch TV, or go somewhere with them. Anyway, spend as much time with them as you can. You can go hiking together, your parents will get to know that you have the ability to deal with different problems, and they will understand you more. Listen to their old stories and learn from them. You will find they are your teachers in one way or another.

A gentle "good morning" and "I love you" will warm the coldest heart every morning. Remember that they brought you into the world. Without your parents, you might still wander at an unknown corner in an unknown world.

It will help you to get more respect from them. It may seem like you are going through hell when you don't get what you want or you have to clean the room when you aren't willing to do that at that moment. However, you had better remember they keep you comfortable when it's cold, raining, snowing, or too hot. Understand that parents are human beings and they make mistakes, too.

    A. Do what you are told to do.

    B. Remember parents are important.

    C. Do things with your parents.

    D. How can your parents believe you?

    E. Respect them more and value these moments.

    F. Tell them you love them.
