    What would you do if a friend asked you to help cheat during an exam? Would you 1or decide to help? This kind of decision has been made 2by using the "four-way test".

    Students in a middle school in Colorado tried 3a test on Nov 8, 2019.  More than 230 eighth graders tried the test. They came up with possible solutions （解决方案） to difficult 4in school. For example, what would you do if a friend took your things 5? Then they used the four-way test to decide 6was the best solution.

    The test asks four questions:

    ⒈Are you choosing an honest solution?

    ⒉Is it 7to everyone involved (涉及的)?

    ⒊Will it build friendship?

    ⒋Will it be beneficial (有益处的) to everyone involved?

    If a person can say " 8" to all of these questions, it seems that he or she is making a good decision.

    "It brings real-life experiences 9to the students," Jack, the teacher of   the school said.   "It causes the students to think about life."

    Tom, 14, found the test to be useful. "If I help my friend cheat on exams, it's not fair or beneficial to everyone involved. So that would be a bad decision," he said. "Since there's a lot of drama going on in school, the four-way test will 10that."

    James, 14, plans to start using the four-way test. "It's a new strategy (策略)," he said. "If I get in fights and conflicts (冲突), I'm going to use it to keep strong."

    A girl was walking in the woods when she found two weak birds. She took them home and put them in a small cage (鸟笼). She took good care of them. The birds grew strong. Every morning, they greeted her with a beautiful song. The girl felt great love for the birds. She wanted them to sing for her forever.

    One day, the girl left their cage door open by mistake. The bigger of the two birds flew out. The girl watched as he rose high into the sky. She was afraid that he would fly away and she would never see him again. As he flew close, she caught him in her hand and held him tightly (紧紧地). She was happy. Suddenly, she felt the bird go limp (无力的). She opened her hand.

    The bird was dead! Her love had stolen life from the beautiful bird.

    The other bird was pushing against the cage. She could see how much he wanted to be free.

    She took him out of the cage and gently sent him to the air. Would the bird fly away? In fact, the bird just wanted to stretch (伸展) his wings. He flew around the girl twice and then came to rest on her shoulder.

    The girl watched the bird with joy in her heart. She wasn't worried anymore. She wanted the bird to be happy. The bird sat by the girl's ear and sang the sweetest song she had ever heard.

    The best way to keep love is to give them wings.

    With the Year of the Rat (鼠) coming up, I'm reminded of going out for Chinese food when I was a kid in the US. In Chinese restaurants, there are always pictures of the zodiac animals (十二生肖) on the wall. For most people in the US, this might be the deepest look they ever get about Chinese culture. When we learned that my aunt is a rat, all of us laughed. It is because in our culture, rats are animals that eat garbage and carry diseases. So we think they are dirty. Calling someone a rat means you fail to believe in him or her. As a kid, this caused me to feel bad for people born in the Year of the Rat. I wondered if Chinese children were ever bullied (欺负) for being a rat.

    Probably not! Human culture is funny. There are always different ways to look at the same thing. I did some researches and found that although Chinese people also see rats as dirty animals, but there is a reason for being one of the zodiac animals.

    According to what I found, rats are considered thrifty (勤俭的) by Chinese people. It is the one that can bring people wealth. They are also very fertile, which makes them a symbol of good luck – traditionally, as you know Chinese people prefer to have large families with many children. Rats are believed to be intelligent as well. Such animals must be clever.

    So now, I'm entering the new year with a fresh way of looking at rats. Perhaps I need to find a new understanding for other things – animals, ideas or even people!

    They keep telling me that my dad is a hero because of his job. My dad, like many other doctors in China, offered to go to Wuhan to care for patients. So my dad just followed his normal routine(日常), discussing patients' diseases and performing operations(做手术).

    With all kinds of compliments (赞美) towards my dad, I become confused. Why has no one else called him a hero before? Wasn't he worth such compliments if this disease hadn't come?

If you happen to go out on the road, you'll see police officers directing the traffic. In hospital, from doctors, nurses to cleaners, these people still stick to their jobs, doing the same services like they ever do.

    The reason why they are still on duty is not for compliments. They are heroes all the time. No matter what time we are getting through, these heroes, are always there, like they have never been gone.

    Dr. Zhong Nanshan was born in October 1936 in Nanjing. He is one of the famous medical scientists in the 21st century. He graduated from Beijing Medical College in 1960. In the first Chinese National Games, he got the championship (冠军)  and set up a national record.
