On a cold November afternoon, my mother and I were walking back home from a pizza store. We had bought many things. I was feeling a little 1as I was carrying our shopping bag, so I decided to throw something away. I noticed a poor man walking out of the restaurant in front of us2I was walking towards a dustbin(垃圾箱). He headed over to the nearby dustbin and started looking through it.

Do you have problems in your life and you don't know how to be happy? Maybe you, like most students, will say "ye". There are some ways to help you keep happy. First we should stop being angry and upset. Whoever you meet, you should try your best to find good things in him or her. Then you will be happy.
Many teenagers think that happiness comes from doing well in an exam or being praised by other people. However, you can still be happy when there are no such "good" things. If you learn from problems and mistakes, happiness will come in the future.
Some schoolboys have problems such as being too tall or too short. Just think that if you are tall, people will notice you, and you can get a better view at the movies. If you are short, your clothes and shoes will take less room in your bedroom! Remember, the most important thing is that you can choose to be happy!
A young American doctor was sleeping when suddenly his doorbell began to ring. It was already midnight, but what could the doctor do? He had to get up, put on his coat and go downstairs. When he opened the door, he saw a man standing with a hat in his hand. "How do you do?" said the man. "Can you come at once to a place out of town? It's quite far but you have a car and I can show you the way."
"Certainly," said the doctor. "I'm quite ready. I can come at once." After a few minutes the car was standing at the front door, the man got into the doctor's car, and they drove off. They drove on for a long time. Then the man said, "Here we are. This is my home. Now I can pay you and you can go back to the town."
"I must see the patient. How can I go back without seeing the patient?"
"There is no patient," explained the man. "Nobody is ill. I live here, you see, and one must get home from a town, mustn't he? There are no taxis this time of the night, but a doctor often makes night calls, so excuse me. Here is money. Thank you, doctor. Good night."
One day a poor farmer was taking a bag of rice to town. Suddenly the bag fell off his horse on the road. He didn't know what to do about it because it was too heavy for him to lift by himself. He only hoped that somebody would soon pass by and help him.
Just at this moment a man riding a horse came up to him. But the farmer was very disappointed (失望) when he saw who he was. It was the great man living nearby. The farmer had hoped to ask another farmer or a poor man like him.
But to his surprise, the great man got off his horse as soon as he came near. He said to the farmer, “I see you need help, friend. How good it is that I'm here just at the right time.” Then he took one end of the bag, the farmer took the other. They together lifted and put it on the horse.
“Sir,” asked the farmer, “how can I pay you?”
“It's quite easy,” the great man answered with a smile, “wherever you see anyone else in trouble, do the same for him.”
It was a beautiful spring morning. There were no clouds in the sky, and the sun is warm but not hot. Mr. Black saw an old man at the bus stop with a big, strong, black umbrella in his hand.
Mr. Black said to him, "Do you think we are going to have rain today?"
"No," said the old man, "I don't think so."
"Then are you carrying the umbrella because the sun is too hot?"
"No, the sun is not very hot in spring." Mr. Black looked at the big umbrella again, and then the man said "I am an old man, and my legs are not very strong. I must have a walking-stick(拐杖). But people will say, 'Look! That man is so old!' I don't like that, so I carry an umbrella every day."
