Nowadays women appear to have a positive image of themselves as safer drivers than men.
In a survey done for insurer MetLife, 51% of women said they drive more safely. The evidence is on their side: Men are 3.4 times more likely than women to get a ticket for careless driving and 3.1 times as likely to be punished for drunk driving. "Women are on average less aggressive and more law abiding (守法的) drivers, which leads to fewer accidents," the report says. However, not all male drivers share the same opinion. Of the men surveyed by MetLife, 39% claimed male drivers were safer. The findings did back them upon one point: automotive knowledge. The report showed that more men are familiar with current safety equipment such as electronic stability control, which helps prevent rollover accidents.
Auto safety unavoidably matters to Money. Insurance companies focus on what classes of drivers have the lowest dollar amounts of claims, and for now, that mainly includes women. In general, women pay about 9% less for auto insurance than men. A study by the website also showed that auto insurance rates are lower for women in most states. Among individual states, women get the greatest, advantage in Wyoming (where they pay 20% less), South Dakota and Washington, D. C, where their insurance costs are 16% lower.
"More than 11,900 male drivers died in US traffic accidents in 2009, compared with just under 4,900 women drivers" according to the study. "Based on miles traveled, men died at a rate of 2. 5 deaths per 100 million miles traveled, vs. 1.7 deaths for women."
Shyness May Be Partly Inherited(遗传)
About 92 million Americans are shy, and according to recent research about half of them inherited the trait.
The studies were discussed at the American Psychological Convention.
One study, by Harvard University, was of babies 21- 48 months old. It concluded that these babies had a high heart rate when shown unfamiliar people or different toys.
Although shyness is not new, it has only recently become of interest to researchers. The first study on the genetic connection was in 1979.
According to Warren Jones of the University of Tulsa, social relations these days are more complex. "With less ritual(仪式) and more complex situations," he said, "shyness is a national concern."
Not all shy people are anxious and fearful, according to another study. Evidence shows that only half of shy people are tense, worried, and fearful in social situations.
Many men use shyness as an excuse for failing in social situations, according to C.R. Snyder of the University of Kansas. "This is not true of females. Perhaps, American men are pressured to be assertive(自信的) and successful. So they would rather say they're shy than admit they're incompetent."
Shy people may do very well socially after the first meeting with someone. In fact, shy people tend to be more stable.
The psychologists said shyness seems to be cultural. Japan has the highest rating. China and Israel have the lowest rating. The United States rated in the middle.
Four benefits of writing by hand
Today is National Handwriting Day! Although we don't write like we used to, here are four ways handwriting is still helpful in.
It's better for learning.
That's because putting ink to paper stimulates (刺激) the brain. One study from 2010 found that the brain areas related to learning “lit up ”much more when kids were asked to write words like "spaceship" by hand versus just studying the words closely.
Many famous authors prefer writing by hand to the use of a typewriter or computer. Writer Susan Sontag once said that she penned her first drafts (草稿)before typing them up for editing later. She said, “ ” A 2009 study seems to support Sontag's preference for writing by hand: Elementary school students who wrote essays with a pen not only wrote more than their keyboard-typing friends, but also wrote faster and in more complete sentences.
It will prevent you from being distracted (分心).
The computer in front of you is really a distraction. In 2012, scientists even suggested that taking a five-minute break to browse Tumblr or BuzzFeed could make you a more productive worker. However, when it's time to work on that essay, have only a pen and paper in front of you.
It keeps your brain sharp as you get older.
According to The Wall Street Journal, some physicians say that the act of writing is good exercise for those who want to keep their minds sharp as they age.
A. It makes you a better writer.
B. Writing is good for your brain.
C. Of course, the Internet isn't all bad.
D. I like the slowness of writing by hand.
E .Try writing by hand at least 20 minutes each day.
F. Many writers have a preference for writing by hand.
G. One of the most effective ways to study is to rewrite your notes by hand.
When I settled in Chicago, my new city seemed so big and unfriendly. Then I had a 1 problem and had to go to hospital for a 2 examination.
It seemed a small 3 compared to the one I was about to face, but things started to go 4 right from the beginning. Not having a car or 5 the city, I was depending on the buses to get me from A to B. 6 I'd left myself plenty of time, soon it was 7 I was going to be late, because I had mistakenly boarded a bus that was taking me in the 8 direction.
I 9 the bus and stood on the road not knowing what to do. I looked into the eyes of a 10, who was trying to get past me. 11, instead of moving on, she stopped to ask if I was 12. After I explained my 13 to her, she pointed to a bus stop across the street, where a bus would take me back into the city to my 14. Sitting there waiting, I felt 15 that someone had been willing to help. 16 , hearing a horn(喇叭)nearby, I looked up to see a car with my new friend 17 at me to get in. She had returned to offer me a 18 to the hospital.
Such unexpected 19 from a passer-by was a lovely gift to receive. As I climbed out of the car at the hospital and turned to thank her, she smiled and told me not to lose 20, for all things are possible.
Once when Kevin was selling hats under a big tree, the monkeys in the tree picked some hats and put (they) on. Kevin took off his own hat and threw it onto the ground. The stupid monkeys also threw their hats! Kevin collected all the hats and left (happy).
Fifty years later, young Tony, grandson of Kevin, also sold hats for a (live). After a long walk, Tony was tired, so he put his bag of hats beside him and (lie) down under a big tree. He soon fell asleep.
When he woke up, Tony found that there weren't any hats (leave) in his bag! Tony looked up and found some monkeys in the tree wearing his hats.
Tony didn't know to do. Then he remembered the story of his grandfather "Yes! I can make these foolish monkeys (return) all my hats," said Tony.
Tony then waved, and did the monkeys. Tony started dancing, and the monkeys were dancing, too. Tony threw his hat on the ground…
Just then, one of the (monkey) jumped down from the tree, picked up hat and said to Tony, "Do you think only you had a grandfather?"
I began only as a calculating machine in France in 1642. I was developing in the following years. About two hundred years later, I was built an analytical machine by Charles Babbage.
Programmed by an operator used cards with holes, I could “think” and produce an answer quicker than any person, which was considered a technological revolution at that time and the start of my "artificial ". In 1936 Alan Turing wrote a book about how I could be made to work as a “universal machine” to difficult mathematical problems. From then on, I grew rapidly in size and in brainpower. By the 1940s I had grown as large as a room. As time went by, with the improvement of my memory, I was made smaller and smaller. Since the 1970s, I have been in offices and homes, and many new have been found for me. I have become very in communication, finance and many other fields.
